Book excerpt: There is a celestial violinist playing to us; we need only listen to catch the tune and break free of the cage of ecclesiastical creeds and dogmas. In Fiddler in the Zoo author and theologian Chrysostom Arangaden reminds us that knowledge is our destiny and that its dissemination offers no barrier. He invites us to explore the traditional beliefs that bind us, as he inspires us to be reborn into the glorious liberty of the children of God. Arangadens work follows the words of Bengali poet Rabindranath Tagore in GitanjaliWhere the mind is without fear and where knowledge is free as the charter for humans everywhere. In the chapter Bible through the Looking Glass he journeys beyond the Scriptures as they are written, seeking deeper meaning and interpretation. In Revelation and Reason, he gently nudges us into a renewed search, not for happinessas happiness can only be a by-productbut for that elusive something that can encourage us to strive against and triumph over evil, both that within us and that beyond our control. Today, people in circumstances that are vastly different from ancient Galileewhether they are fishermen or physicists, artisans or astronomersare invited to listen to Jesus in joy or sorrow and to learn from Him. Arangaden shares his insight into the beauty of Christianity offering a guide to living and a call to the fullness of life.

The Llywelyn family’s livelihood largely depends on the ferry, run by Siona Llywelyn, the kindly yet rugged head of the family. The family is large but close knit, held together by their mother Emily—a hard-working woman made old before her time having borne seven sons, and now with child once again. As the boys grow into young men, tensions flare in the family unit, made worse by a web of rivalries and ambitions. There’s also a body inside the car, handcuffed to the steering wheel. Book Entangled Encounters at the National Zoo

Download or read book Entangled Encounters at the National Zoo written by Daniel Vandersommers and published by University Press of Kansas. This book was released on 2023-09-29 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Founded amid the urban commotion of Washington, DC, before the dawn of the twentieth century, the National Zoological Park opened to “preserve, teach, and conduct research about the animal world.” Entangled Encounters at the National Zoo is a study of this important cultural landmark from 1887 to 1920. Centered on the animals themselves, each chapter looks from a different angle at the influential science of popular zoology in order to shed new light on the complex, entangled relationships between humans and animals. Daniel Vandersommers’s goal is twofold. First, through narrative, he shows how zoo animals always ran away from the zoo. This is meant literally—animals escaped frequently—but even more so, figuratively. Living, breathing, historical zoo animals ran away from their cultural constructions, and these constructions ran away from the living bodies they were made to represent. The author shows that the resulting gaps produced by runaway animals contain concealed, distorted, and erased histories worthy of uncovering. Second, Entangled Encounters at the National Zoo demonstrates how the popular zoology fostered by the National Zoo shaped every aspect of American science, culture, and conservation during the Gilded Age and Progressive Era. Between the 1880s and World War I, as intellectuals debated Darwinism and scientists institutionalized the laboratory, zoological parks suddenly appeared at the heart of nearly every major American city, captivating tens of millions of visitors. Vandersommers follows stories previously hidden within the National Zoo in order to help us reconsider the place of zoos and their inhabitants in the twenty-first century.

Book Zoos in Postmodernism

  • Author : Stephen Spotte
  • Publisher : Fairleigh Dickinson Univ Press
  • Release : 2006
  • ISBN : 083864094X
  • Pages : 209 pages

Download or read book Zoos in Postmodernism written by Stephen Spotte and published by Fairleigh Dickinson Univ Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The putative mission of zoos - education and conservation - yield doubtful results, education because its information relies on description and exposition instead of narrative, conservation because only a few large, showy vertebrates receive the most effort. By controlling reproduction and restricting evolution, zoos reduce animals to artifacts - unattached ecological fragments - and ultimately revoke their ontological status as part of the natural world." "Spotte's argument assumes manifestations that impinge on contemporary theories of art, film, literature, photography, and science, the whole anchored securely by the twin poles of semiotics and simulation. This willingness to grapple with high-level theory - and to take intellectual risks - sets Zoos in Postmodernism apart from other treatments of zoos in contemporary western literature."--BOOK JACKET.
