Book The Sacred Path to Islam

Download or read book The Sacred Path to Islam written by The Sincere Seeker and published by . This book was released on 2020-11-05 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do you seek to know the true Message and Wisdom of Islam? Do you yearn to build a closer and more meaningful relationship with your Creator? The Sincere Seeker is an online platform that features animated videos and blog articles about God, Islam, and the Holy Quran; all of which are designed to educate and inspire. The Sincere Seeker is intended to serve those seeking God and the Truth, new converts to the Islamic faith, and current Muslims both practicing and non-practicing. When I initiated my study of the Holy Quran, I was awestruck by its inimitable style, peerless form, and powerful spiritual impact. It fascinated me to discover that it contained and conveyed signs of God's Greatness, miracles, parables, and lessons for me and humanity as a whole. It amazed me to learn that the Holy Quran deals with all the subjects which concern me and people of today; including doctrine, wisdom, worship, law, transactions, and more. I could very much relate to this Book, finding in its pages answers to issues I had encountered throughout my life. The more time I spent reading this Book, the more it helped me discover myself. As I studied the Holy Quran more deeply, I was left mesmerized by its structure, power, cohesiveness, Wisdom, spiritual elevation, and the language it uses. The more I read the Holy Quran and studied Islam, the closer I felt to God; the more I loved Him. Islam and the Holy Quran introduced me to an entity who is All-Loving, All-Knowledgeable, All-Hearing, All-Seeing. It introduced me to my Lord, the Creator of this World and all it contains. It introduced me to a God that established the path to self-transformation, and Whose laws only lighten the burdens in my life. It fascinated me. I developed the urge to share with others the Message of this incredible Book and its inherent religion. I want to introduce people to the Religion of Islam in a unique, authentic, academic, engaging, spiritual, and fun way; thus, inspiring them to morally, intellectually, and spiritually lead more fulfilling lives in this world, and to be better prepared for the next life. Taking the journey of Islam will change a person for the better, providing them a meaning and a purpose in their life.

Book Foods of the Gods

Download or read book Foods of the Gods written by Gary Westfahl and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gluttony and starvation, pleasure and pain, growth and decay. These and other extremes of our condition related to food, though all but banned from the "civilized" tables of mainstream fiction, are ideal topics for the "undomesticated," free-roaming modes of fantasy. As acts and ideas, food and eating are fundamental to all that makes us human and dominate our symbolic realms of art, literature, and cuisine. These essays show us the power of speculative modes of fiction to help us look anew at prehistorical and psychomythical attitudes toward food and eating; historical Western-cultural attitudes toward the material fact of food and the necessity of eating; and the relationship between attitudes toward food and how, how much, when, and where we eat. The contributors come from a variety of backgrounds, including anthropology, film, and French, Russian, English, and medieval literature. Ranging in their focus from shamans to cannibals, utopias to social Darwinism, muscle magazines to supermarket tabloids, the contributors discuss the theory and practice of science fictional eating; the dialectic, at the level of eating, between individual needs and collective norms; and the ways that eating habits and the availability and choice of food serve to contextualize and demarcate modern fictional genres. In addition to discussing such writers as C. S. Lewis, Stephen King, Octavia Butler, Jonathan Swift, and Anne Rice, the contributors also consider such films as Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and Cocteau's Beauty and the Beast.

Download or read book Wonder Foods written by Lisa Haushofer and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2022-12-27 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1850 and 1950, experts and entrepreneurs in Britain and the United States forged new connections between the nutrition sciences and the commercial realm through their enthusiasm for new edible consumables. The resulting food products promised wondrous solutions for what seemed to be both individual and social ills. By examining creations such as Gail Borden's meat biscuit, Benger's Food, Kellogg's health foods, and Fleischmann's yeast, Wonder Foods shows how new products dazzled with visions of modernity, efficiency, and scientific progress even as they perpetuated exclusionary views about who deserved to eat, thrive, and live. Drawing on extensive archival research, historian Lisa Haushofer reveals that the story of modern food and nutrition was not about innocuous technological advances or superior scientific insights, but rather about the powerful logic of exploitation and economization that undergirded colonial and industrial food projects. In the process, these wonder foods shaped both modern food regimes and how we think about food.

Book excerpt: How we as Canadians procure, produce, cook, consume, and think about food creates our cuisine, and our nation of immigrant traditions has produced a distinctive and evolving repertoire that is neither hodgepodge nor smorgasbord. Contributors, who come from the diverse worlds of universities, museums, the media, and gastronomy, look at Canada's distinctive foodways from the shared perspective of the current moment. Individual chapters explore food items and choices, from those made by Canada's First Nations and early settlers to those made today. Other contributions describe the ways in which foods enjoyed by early Canadians have found their way back onto Canadian tables in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Authors emphasize the expressive potential of food practices and food texts; cookbooks are more than books to be read and used in the kitchen, they are also documents that convey valuable social and historical information.

Book A Cultural History of Race in the Renaissance and Early Modern Age

Download or read book A Cultural History of Race in the Renaissance and Early Modern Age written by Kimberly Ann Coles and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2023-06-01 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The past is always an interpretive act from the lens of the present. Through the lens of critical race theory, the essays collected here explore new analytical models, theoretical frameworks, and methodological approaches in attempting to reimagine the European Renaissance and early modern periods in terms of global expansion, awareness, and participation. Centering race in these periods requires that we acknowledge the people against whom social hierarchies and differential treatment were directed. This collection takes Europe as its focus, but White Europeans are not centred in it and the experiences of Black Africans, Asians, Jews and Muslims are not relegated to the margins of a shared history. Situating Europe within a global context forces the reconsideration of the violence that attends the interaction of peoples both across cultures and enmired within them. The less we are attentive to the cultural interactions, cross- cultural migrations and global dimensions of the late medieval and early modern periods, the less we are forced to recognize the violence, intolerance, power struggles and enforced suppressions that attend them.

Book Commensality From Everyday Food to Feast

Download or read book Commensality From Everyday Food to Feast written by Susanne Kerner and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2015-02-26 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout time and in every culture, human beings have eaten together. Commensality - eating and drinking at the same table - is a fundamental social activity, which creates and cements relationships. It also sets boundaries, including or excluding people according to a set of criteria defined by the society. Particular scholarly attention has been paid to banquets and feasts, often hosted for religious, ritualistic or political purposes, but few studies have considered everyday commensality. Commensality: From Everyday Food to Feast offers an insight into this social practice in all its forms, from the most basic and mundane meals to the grandest occasions. Bringing together insights from anthropologists, archaeologists and historians, this volume offers a vast historical scope, ranging from the Late Neolithic period (6th millennium BC), through the Middle Ages, to the present day. The sixteen chapters include case studies from across the world, including the USA, Bolivia, China, Southeast Asia, Iran, Turkey, Portugal, Denmark and the UK. Connecting these diverse analyses is an understanding of commensality's role as a social and political tool, integral to the formation of personal and national identities. From first experiences of commensality in the sharing of food between a mother and child, to the inaugural dinner of the American president, this collection of essays celebrates the variety of human life and society.

Book excerpt: Science Fiction in Translation: Perspectives on the Global Theory and Practice of Translation focuses on the process of translation and its implications. The volume explores the translation of works of science fiction (SF) from one language to another and the translation of SF tropes, terms, and ideas of SF theory into cultures outside the West. Providing a comprehensive examination of the state of translation into English, the essays consider how representative the body of translated work of SF is from the source language/culture. It also considers the social, political, and economic choices in selecting a work to translate. The book illustrates the dramatic growth both in SF production outside the Anglosphere, the translation of works from other languages into English, and the practice of translating English-language SF into other languages. Altogether, the essays map the theory, practice, and business of SF translation around the world.

Book The Food Network Recipe

Download or read book The Food Network Recipe written by Emily L. Newman and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2021-04-06 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the Television Food Network launched in 1993, its programming was conceived as educational: it would teach people how to cook well, with side trips into the economics of food and healthy living. Today, however, the network is primarily known for splashy celebrity chefs and spirited competition shows. These new essays explore how the Food Network came to be known for consistently providing comforting programming that offers an escape from reality, where the storyline is just as important as the food that is being created. It dissects some of the biggest personalities that emerged from the Food Network itself, such as Guy Fieri, and offers a critical examination of a variety of chefs' feminisms and the complicated nature of success. Some writers posit that the Food Network is creating an engaging, important dialogue about modes of instruction and education, and others analyze how the Food Network presents locality and place through the sharing of food culture with the viewing public. This book will bring together these threads as it explores the rise, development, and unique adaptability of the Food Network.
