Download or read book The Math Teachers Know written by Brent Davis and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-07-18 with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What sorts of mathematics competencies must teachers have in order to teach the discipline well? This book offers a novel take on the question. Most research is focused on explicit knowledge–that is, on the sorts of insights that might be specified, catalogued, taught, and tested. In contrast, this book focuses on the tacit dimensions of teachers’ mathematics knowledge that precede and enable their competencies with formal mathematics. It highlights the complexity of this knowledge and offers strategies to uncover it, analyze it, and re-synthesize it in ways that will make it more available for teaching. Emerging from 10 years of collaborative inquiry with practicing teachers, it is simultaneously informed by the most recent research and anchored to the realities of teachers’ lives in classrooms.

Download or read book Women in Early British and Irish Astronomy written by Mary Brück and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-07-25 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Careers in astronomy for women (as in other sciences) were a rarity in Britain and Ireland until well into the twentieth century. The book investigates the place of women in astronomy before that era, recounted in the form of biographies of about 25 women born between 1650 and 1900 who in varying capacities contributed to its progress during the eighteenth, nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. There are some famous names among them whose biographies have been written before now, there are others who have received less than their due recognition while many more occupied inconspicuous and sometimes thankless places as assistants to male family members. All deserve to be remembered as interesting individuals in an earlier opportunity-poor age. Placed in roughly chronological order, their lives constitute a sample thread in the story of female entry into the male world of science. The book is aimed at astronomers, amateur astronomers, historians of science, and promoters of women in science, but being written in non-technical language it is intended to be of interest also to educated readers generally.

Book excerpt: From subway to Broadway to happily ever after. Modern love in all its thrill, hilarity, and uncertainty has never been so compulsively readable as in New York Times bestselling author Christina Lauren’s Roomies. Marriages of convenience are so...inconvenient. For months Holland Bakker has invented excuses to descend into the subway station near her apartment, drawn to the captivating music performed by her street musician crush. Lacking the nerve to actually talk to the gorgeous stranger, fate steps in one night in the form of a drunken attacker. Calvin Mcloughlin rescues her, but quickly disappears when the police start asking questions. Using the only resource she has to pay the brilliant musician back, Holland gets Calvin an audition with her uncle, Broadway’s hottest musical director. When the tryout goes better than even Holland could have imagined, Calvin is set for a great entry into Broadway—until his reason for disappearing earlier becomes clear: he’s in the country illegally, his student visa having expired years ago. Seeing that her uncle needs Calvin as much as Calvin needs him, a wild idea takes hold of her. Impulsively, she marries the Irishman, her infatuation a secret only to him. As their relationship evolves and Calvin becomes the darling of Broadway—in the middle of the theatrics and the acting-not-acting—will Holland and Calvin to realize that they both stopped pretending a long time ago?
Download or read book Jean Baptiste Say and Political Economy written by Jean-Baptiste Say and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2016-11-10 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jean-Baptiste Say (1767–1832) was one of the first great economists to have laid down the foundations of economic science. Author of the famous Treatise on Political Economy in 1803, which was revised and re-edited on several occasions, he published numerous other works including a voluminous Complete Course in Practical Political Economy in 1828–9. He also taught political economy successively from 1815 until his death in three Parisian establishments: the Athénée, the Conservatory of Arts and Trades, and the Collège de France. The texts in which Say exposes his approach to political economy have not been available in the English language until now except for the fourth edition of the ‘Preliminary Discourse’ which serves as an introduction to the Treatise. This book presents a translation which renders his works accessible to the English speaking world. For the first time, English readers will be able to become directly immersed in Say’s principal texts, where he develops his conception of political economy. Jean-Baptiste Say and Political Economy proposes a translation of a selection of eleven of Say’s texts. The first three are versions of the ‘Preliminary Discourse’ from the Treatise’s editions of 1803, 1814 and 1826 with the variations of the editions of 1817, 1819 and 1841. The following four texts are the opening discourses pronounced at the Conservatory in 1820 and 1828 and the Collège de France in 1831 and 1832. The eighth text is the ‘General Considerations’ which open the Complete Course in Practical Political Economy of 1828, with the variations of the 1840 re-edition. The final three texts are those Say devotes to ‘the progress of political economy’ in what is akin to a history of economic thought. This volume is of great importance to economic historians and people studying Jean-Baptiste Say, as well as those who are interested in economic theory and philosophy and political economy.

Download or read book The Last Photographic Heroes written by Gilles Mora and published by Harry N. Abrams. This book was released on 2007-12-01 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The photography that Americans invented in the sixties and seventies was as innovative, bold, and vital as their music. In the wild years between the publication of Robert Frank's landmark The Americans in 1958 and the discovery of the postmodernist Cindy Sherman in the early 1980s, the photographers featured in this book embarked on their own personal quests for an independent and unique photographic language that would redefine the scope and content of documentary photography as well as the expressive potential of the photographic image. Real heroes of a challenging, dynamic modernity, they believed in a medium with endless possibilities and devoted themselves, with an abundance of creative energy, to reinvigorating it in a wide range of inventive ways. GIlles Mora introduces us to the work of these heroic photographers, and to the curators, gallery owners, critics, and collectors who facilitated their rise in the art world and the marketplace. Members of an authentic artistic community, inspired by the legacy of Walker Evans, they include major figures such as Garry Winogrand, Lee Friedlander, Diane Arbus, Les Krims, Ralph Eugene Meatyard, BIll Owens, Robert Adams, Henry Wessel Jr., William Eggleston, and Joel Meyerowitz, along with the gallery owner Lee D. Witkin and the great MoMA curator John Szarkowski. This generation of photographers knew it was remarkable. Today, with Giles Mora as a guide, we can look back on it with greater appreciation. The Last Photographic Heroes offers a personal perspective on this lively and engaging chapter in modern photography, presenting not only a critique but also a veritable visual anthology of major photographic works and artists. -- from dust jacket.
