Book A Discrete Event Simulator Model of a Fibre Channel Switch at the Fibre Channel 2 Level

Download or read book A Discrete Event Simulator Model of a Fibre Channel Switch at the Fibre Channel 2 Level written by Timothy J. Brothers and published by ProQuest. This book was released on 2007 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ever-increasing demand for fast and reliable data storage has led to a storage system known as a storage area network (SAN). A SAN is a storage network that connects servers to storage through a network known as a fabric. The fabric is based on the Fiber Channel (FC) protocol and is most often composed of fiber optic devices. The devices of a fabric run at high data rates, 1Gbps to 10Gbps, with very low losses. Medium sized SANs have been a common implementation for data storage in enterprize data centers, but with the increasing demand for data storage the SANs have developed into distributed SANs (DSANs) also known as large fabrics. In this work a number of investigations were conducted on a large fabric and it was found that a large fabric experiences fabric scaling and fabric stability issues. To understand the extent of the scaling and stability issues of a large fabric an adequate tool is required, and for this investigation the tool was selected as a discrete event software simulator. The software simulator provides a number of benefits over the alternative tools of an analytical model or a hardware test setup, such as cost and time. However, the initial time requirement to construct the model is greater than the alternative tools, and in order to develop the model both an analytical model and a hardware test setup must be utilized. In this work, the modeling of a FC switch using the OMNET++ discrete event simulator and the simulations of a large fabric are presented. The model implements the FC 2 level of the switch, which contains the fabric services, such as the directory services, name server, routing, etc. These fabric services are solely responsible for fabric building and managing. This dissertation also details the benchmarking tests of a SAN and DSAN, and examines one of the existing simulation tools to show the exact problem with the existing simulations.

Book Storage and Network Convergence Using FCoE and iSCSI

Download or read book Storage and Network Convergence Using FCoE and iSCSI written by Sangam Racherla and published by IBM Redbooks. This book was released on 2014-07-18 with total page 616 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Along with servers and networking infrastructure, networked storage is one of the fundamental components of a modern data center. Because storage networking has evolved over the past two decades, the industry has settled on the basic storage networking technologies. These technologies are Fibre Channel (FC) storage area networks (SANs), Internet Small Computer System Interface (iSCSI)-based Ethernet attachment, and Ethernet-based network-attached storage (NAS). Today, lossless, low-latency, high-speed FC SANs are viewed as the high-performance option for networked storage. iSCSI and NAS are viewed as lower cost, lower performance technologies. The advent of the 100 Gbps Ethernet and Data Center Bridging (DCB) standards for lossless Ethernet give Ethernet technology many of the desirable characteristics that make FC the preferred storage networking technology. These characteristics include comparable speed, low latency, and lossless behavior. Coupled with an ongoing industry drive toward better asset utilization and lower total cost of ownership, these advances open the door for organizations to consider consolidating and converging their networked storage infrastructures with their Ethernet data networks. Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE) is one approach to this convergence, but 10-Gbps-enabled iSCSI also offers compelling options for many organizations with the hope that their performance can now rival that of FC. This IBM® Redbooks® publication is written for experienced systems, storage, and network administrators who want to integrate the IBM System Networking and Storage technology successfully into new and existing networks. This book provides an overview of today's options for storage networking convergence. It reviews the technology background for each of these options and then examines detailed scenarios for them by using IBM and IBM Business Partner convergence products.
