Book excerpt: Object Lessons is a series of short, beautifully designed books about the hidden lives of ordinary things. Pause and look around: you will see that you are surrounded by glass. It reflects and refracts light through your windows; it encircles a glowing filament above you; it's in a mirror hanging on the wall; it lies shattered in a dented corner of an iPhone-you're drinking water out of a pint glass. Taking up a most common object, rarely considered because assumed to be transparent, John Garrison draws evocative connections between historical depictions of glass and emerging visions that see it as holding a unique promise for new forms of interaction. Grounded in everyday examples, this book offers a series of surprising insights into how we increasingly find ourselves living in a world made of glass. Object Lessons is published in partnership with an essay series in The Atlantic.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born in Sydney, Australia, the son of an American sailor and an Australian school teacher, I was raised and educated in the United States, my childhood spent on a small farm in the Midwest and my adolescence in the suburbs of Los Angeles. I worked in the Post Office in San Francisco for five years and then taught French and English in a small country town in New South Wales, Australia, during the seventies. The character of its people, the austere beauty and the sense of space of this continent left a deep impression upon me and can be seen in my poems. I began experimenting with poetry in the early eighties, and this became a genuine passion in l984 when I was selected as one of fifteen Washington, D.C. area poets for the Jenny McKean Moore Poetry Workshop at The George Washington University taught by Julia Alvarez. My short stories have appeared inContempa, an Australian literary review, and my poetry in a number of U.S. reviews including Visions, The Birmingham Poetry Review, The George Mason Review, The Atlanta Review and others. My work appears in two anthologies: Hungry As We Are, (Washington Writers Publishing House, l995) and Free State : A Harvest of Maryland Poets (A Scop Publications anthology, l989). My first collection of poems, Painting at Night was published in 1994. I was a French and English teacher in Prince Georges County and now live in Annapolis, Maryland. I am a member of the Washington Writers Center and have participated in readings and writing workshops there and at various locations throughout the Washington-Baltimore area. My other passions are travel, dogs, and jazz, all of which enrich my poetry.

Book Fantasies of Virtual Reality

Download or read book Fantasies of Virtual Reality written by Marcus Carter and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2024-09-10 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fantasies that underpin common perceptions of Virtual Reality—and what we need to know about VR’s potential risks as well as its opportunities. Virtual reality is the next new frontier for Silicon Valley. Mark Zuckerberg, who has overseen Meta’s investment of billions into VR, pitches it as the next dominant computing paradigm. More than just a gaming technology, VR is top of mind for academics, tech reportage, and industry evangelists who all see the potential for VR to revolutionize fields such as education and health, as well as the way we work and communicate. But will VR achieve all this? In Fantasies of Virtual Reality, Marcus Carter and Ben Egliston strip bare the tech industry’s vision of a future dominated by immersive VR experiences, challenging the utopian promises of this technology’s potential. Carter and Egliston offer a critical account of VR in a variety of contexts, from gaming to human resources to policing and the military. They argue that while VR does hold significant potential, the overhyped expectations surrounding it, from achieving true empathetic understanding to transforming traditional education and office work, are often overstated and fraught with issues of privacy, control, and exclusion. What’s more, there is nothing truly virtual about virtual reality: VR is deeply entrenched in the material world, driven by tangible technological, economic, and social logics. An accessible introduction to this emerging technology, Fantasies of Virtual Reality is essential reading for anyone interested in what VR can really do—and what is just plain fantasy.
