Book Talking the Walk Walking the Talk

Download or read book Talking the Walk Walking the Talk written by Marc Shell and published by Fordham Univ Press. This book was released on 2015-09-01 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book argues that we should regard walking and talking in a single rhythmic vision. In doing so, it contributes to the theory of prosody, our understanding of respiration and looking, and, in sum, to the particular links, across the board, between the human characteristics of bipedal walking and meaningful talk. The author first introduces the philosophical, neurological, anthropological, and aesthetic aspects of the subject in historical perspective, then focuses on rhetoric and introduces a tension between the small and large issues of rhythm. He thereupon turns his attention to the roles of breathing in poetry—as a life-and-death matter, with attention to beats and walking poems. This opens onto technical concepts from the classical traditions of rhetoric and philology. Turning to the relationship between prosody and motion, he considers both animals and human beings as both ostensibly able-bodied creatures and presumptively disabled ones. Finally, he looks at dancing and writing as aspects of walking and talking, with special attention to motion in Arabic and Chinese calligraphy. The final chapters of the book provide a series of interrelated representative case studies.

Book Do You Speak American

Download or read book Do You Speak American written by Robert Macneil and published by Nan A. Talese. This book was released on 2007-12-18 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is American English in decline? Are regional dialects dying out? Is there a difference between men and women in how they adapt to linguistic variations? These questions, and more, about our language catapulted Robert MacNeil and William Cran—the authors (with Robert McCrum) of the language classic The Story of English—across the country in search of the answers. Do You Speak American? is the tale of their discoveries, which provocatively show how the standard for American English—if a standard exists—is changing quickly and dramatically. On a journey that takes them from the Northeast, through Appalachia and the Deep South, and west to California, the authors observe everyday verbal interactions and in a host of interviews with native speakers glean the linguistic quirks and traditions characteristic of each area. While examining the histories and controversies surrounding both written and spoken American English, they address anxieties and assumptions that, when explored, are highly emotional, such as the growing influence of Spanish as a threat to American English and the special treatment of African-American vernacular English. And, challenging the purists who think grammatical standards are in serious deterioration and that media saturation of our culture is homogenizing our speech, they surprise us with unpredictable responses. With insight and wit, MacNeil and Cran bring us a compelling book that is at once a celebration and a potent study of our singular language. Each wave of immigration has brought new words to enrich the American language. Do you recognize the origin of 1. blunderbuss, sleigh, stoop, coleslaw, boss, waffle? Or 2. dumb, ouch, shyster, check, kaput, scram, bummer? Or 3. phooey, pastrami, glitch, kibbitz, schnozzle? Or 4. broccoli, espresso, pizza, pasta, macaroni, radio? Or 5. smithereens, lollapalooza, speakeasy, hooligan? Or 6. vamoose, chaps, stampede, mustang, ranch, corral? 1. Dutch 2. German 3. Yiddish 4. Italian 5. Irish 6. Spanish

Download or read book Who Is He written by Shirell Warren-Stout and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2020-02-28 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the adults now and the adults yet to come, the coming of age experiences are part of life. Throughout our life, we grapple with what is frivolous and what is important. It is of my opinion that this struggle is at its most animated in our childhood years. Both the frivolous and important (the vain and the profound) are all new to us in our youth. In our youth, many of us find it easy to hold onto a symbol of what we perceive as important or most important in life. Although the symbols will vary, the approach is basically the same. To put it simply, the approach is catching "the brass ring" of life. Come with me on a journey of a young city girl of Generation "X" status to discover her initial symbol of what is important to what is unchanging. Our young city girl will not be alone in her journey. We have Aunt Wilma, Cousin Patrice, and Cousin Tiger, friends, teachers, and people we can only see from afar along for the ride. There are the quintessential effects of the 1970s and 1980s such as 8 tracks and neon colors. Yes, this is somewhat a period piece of fiction. Nevertheless, I hope those who are before, during, and after this time period will relate to the story on some level. This story covers a little over a decade of the protagonist's life, primarily in two-year intervals. The story, as the title suggests, is a question that the protagonist struggles to answer. Some questions in life are simple yet infinite. Our city girl's question is of the latter. There are plenty of references to pop culture and even a few historical events. However, keep in mind the question, "Who is he?"
