Ces fentes peuvent être labiales, labio-maxillaires, labio-maxillo-palatines ou n'intéresser que le palais. Mais quelque soit leur typologie, leur prise en charge chirurgicale, orthophonique et orthondontique permettent d'obtenir des résultats très favorables, ainsi les enfants retrouvent une apparence et des fonctions buccales physiologiques. Les études de dossiers réalisées ont montrées que cette malformation, lorsqu'elle est isolée, ne grève ni le pronostic obstétrical ni le pronostic fœtal. En revanche, ce dernier peut être grevé si d'autres pathologies sont associées. Le diagnostic anténatal de ces fentes permet une recherche étiologique, la mise en évidence d'éventuelles malformations associées et surtout de préparer la rencontre mère-enfant. La sage-femme, partenaire des couples du début de la grossesse jusqu'au post-partum, est un interlocuteur privilégié pour eux. Son rôle essentiel est d'être une coordinatrice de la prise en charge pluridisciplinaire nécessaire pour répondre aux attentes des parents et pour le devenir de l'enfant.
