Book excerpt: In this work of feminist film criticism, Mary Ann Doane examines questions of sexual difference and knowledge in cinematic, theoretical, and psychoanalytic discourses. "Femmes Fatales" examines Freud, the female spectator, the meaning of the close-up, and the nature of stardom. Doane's analyses of such figures as Pabst's Lulu and Rita Hayworth's Gilda trace the thematics and mechanics of maskes, masquerade, and veiling, with specific attention to the form and technology of the cinema. Working through and against the intellectual frameworks of post-structuralist and psychoanalytic theory, Doane interrogates cinematic and theoretical claims to truth about women which rely on judgements about vision and its stability or instability. Reflecting the shift in conceptual priorities within feminist film theory over the last decade, "Femmes Fatales" addresses debates over female spectatorhsip, essentialism and anti-essentialism, the tensions between psychoanalysis and history, and the relations between racial and sexual difference. Doane's nuanced and original readings of the "femme fatale" in cinema illustrate confrontations between feminism, film theory and psychoanalysis. This book should be of interest to students and lecturers in women's studies, communications studies and film theory.

It blends the ground-breaking Access Consciousness® tools and processes, insightful revelations and heart-warming inspiration. Says Douglas: "My desire is to give women in the world a greater sense of peace with others and peace with self and the place where they wouldn't feel like they have to fight for everything they are getting."Douglas encourages women to become "pragmatists of femininity," applying their feminine power to create what they want. A "pragmatic relationship" is where partners strive to make things work for everyone involved, he says. "Happily ever after doesn't occur unless you are willing to become pragmatic about your choices.""Salon des Femmes is a profound book. If it's read with care, it will change women's lives in really big ways."

Book Rania Matar L Enfant Femme

Download or read book Rania Matar L Enfant Femme written by Lois Lowry and published by Damiani Limited. This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In today's world of endless photographing, tagging, and posting images online, what is a preteen girl's relationship to the camera? Upending assumptions of contemporary digital image-making practices, photographer Rania Matar reframes these young women through her poignant portraits of them, revealing in 'L'Enfant-Femme' how girls between the ages of 8 and 12 interact with the camera and in so doing depicts them in deeply personal and poetic ways. Addressing themes of representation, voyeurism, and transgression, Matar's images remind us of the fragility of yough while also gesturing towards its unbridled curiosity and joy. Candidly capturing her subjects at a critical juncture in the early stages of adolescence, Matar's images convey the confluence of angst, sexuality, and personhood that defines the progression from childhood into adulthood.
