This book, which offers a fresh reading of Gilman's fiction, fills a void in Gilman scholarship, in feminist utopian scholarship, and in American literary studies. Kessler provides three journeys through Gilman's life: "A Biographical Exploration'' discusses facets of her life having a substantial impact upon her utopian writing. Four themes influence this development: the legacy of ancestral expectations; her relationships to father, mother, and daughter; the experience of two marriages and a divorce; and her friendships with women. Gilman and her "Prancing Young Utopia" presents three stages in the development of Gilman's utopian writing. First, she imagined neighborhoods-writing alternately fiction and nonfiction. Second, she tested in fiction the expression of utopian principles explained in her nonfiction. Finally, she created the whole society in her 1915 satire Herland. All of the foregoing writing represents Gilman's effort to imagine in fiction solutions that she recommended in her 1898 feminist treatise, Women and Economics. "Writing to Empower Living'' connects Gilman's biography to her utopian writing as both personal expression and public activism. The writing can be understood as "equipment for living." Ten hard-to-locate utopian short stories and chapters from four novels conclude the volume.

According to her, women were seen only as a sexed group that was subordinated by men. Not only did she search for the roots of this subordination, but also focused on education with the goal of creating a humane and nurturing environment. Not only did they reflect the country's prevalent dissatisfaction with deficient political, economic and social conditions, but they also provided a platform for writers to explore alternative structures beyond the limits of reality. For feminist writers, the utopia enabled them to envision emancipation from patriarchal structures and challenge prevailing gender hierarchies. Charlotte Perkins Gilman is ranked among the most influential voices of the feminist reform movement of the Fin de Siècle, and is best known for her utopian novel "Herland" (1915). She herein thematizes the issue of gender inequality through an isolated and thriving all-female society and pictures the possibilities that would arise for women without the limitations of patriarchy.

Some scholars argue that feminist utopian fiction can be used as a template for creating such a future. However, Sally L. Kitch argues that associating feminist thought with utopianism is a mistake. Drawing on the history of utopian thought, as well as on her own research on utopian communities, Kitch defines utopian thinking, explores the pitfalls of pursuing social change based on utopian ideas, and argues for a "higher ground" —a contrasting approach she calls realism. Replacing utopianism with realism helps to eliminate self-defeating notions in feminist theory, such as false generalization, idealization, and unnecessary dichotomies. Realistic thought, however, allows feminist theory to respond to changing circumstances, acknowledge sameness as well as difference, value the past and the present, and respect ideological give-and-take. An important critique of feminist thought, Kitch concludes with a clear, exciting vision for a feminist future without utopia.
