Despite the progress made worldwide, we continue to witness a reality in which gender issues generate injustice, lack of freedom and violation of human rights. Researchers constantly strive to analyze women phenomena and denounce its consequences in the attempt to achieve an egalitarian world in which differences are understood and respected. This book is one of the fruits of such efforts. Scholars interested in women's issues have joined in this volume in order to register, through their work, a commitment to progress towards a better society. With this work, the authors attempt to promote the voice of women who, even in the twenty-first century, feel deprived of their well-deserved security. At the same time, they attempt not only to keep alive the awareness about women's situation, but also create an academic meeting point that shows the most current areas of research around women's issue. Through this collaboration, the authors hope to achieve a review of contemporary approaches to women's studies. It is for all the above that they have entitled this book Feminism: Past, Present, and Future Perspectives, because the authors are going to address how humanity is coping with the proposals of the last century. In July 2000 it made an official statement of intent to promote gender equality by endorsing a National Policy on Women. Yet, the vast majority of women persist on the periphery of economic and political life. In spite of a considerable degree of compatibility between women's aspirations and the NPW, particularly in terms of addressing immediate practical necessity, awareness of its existence and that of the new National Gender Policy remains low. Consequently, there is no concerted agenda to push for policy implementation. The Gender Management System put in place by the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs to oversee the mainstreaming of gender policy is undermined by institutionalised and routinised gender bias and by systemic distortions in the wider policy environment.This book examines the relevance of the NPW to the aspirations of Nigerian women, through their eyes. It explores the experiences, perspectives and collective agendas of women across class, ethnicity and religion to discover their understandings of the present and visions for the future. It also investigates the extent to which state institutional capability exists to implement gender policy, and to mainstream gender perspectives as the policy stipulates. Drawing on new research, the authors indicate that these different national contexts require separate emphases and tactics. One common factor is clear, howeverthat despite many setbacks, a growing consciousness exists among women, as well as increased opposition to oppressive measures.
