This book was released on 2021 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine the difference in perceived barriers accessing medical care between female and male veterans, to determine the perceptions of satisfaction with healthcare services received, and healthcare differences between dualinsured and single insured-female veterans. One hundred thirty-eight female and male veterans submitted responses to a modified Patient Satisfaction Questionnaire-III electronic survey and fourteen veterans agreed to a face-to-face interview. A one-way ANOVA, a Chi square analysis and a Qualitative Content-Thematic Analysis were utilized to determine the differences in accessing medical care and general satisfaction of medical care received. The results of the study indicated there were no significant differences in medical care access or perceived differences in medical care satisfaction.

Book Evaluation of the Department of Veterans Affairs Mental Health Services

Download or read book Evaluation of the Department of Veterans Affairs Mental Health Services written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2018-03-29 with total page 467 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Approximately 4 million U.S. service members took part in the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. Shortly after troops started returning from their deployments, some active-duty service members and veterans began experiencing mental health problems. Given the stressors associated with war, it is not surprising that some service members developed such mental health conditions as posttraumatic stress disorder, depression, and substance use disorder. Subsequent epidemiologic studies conducted on military and veteran populations that served in the operations in Afghanistan and Iraq provided scientific evidence that those who fought were in fact being diagnosed with mental illnesses and experiencing mental healthâ€"related outcomesâ€"in particular, suicideâ€"at a higher rate than the general population. This report provides a comprehensive assessment of the quality, capacity, and access to mental health care services for veterans who served in the Armed Forces in Operation Enduring Freedom/Operation Iraqi Freedom/Operation New Dawn. It includes an analysis of not only the quality and capacity of mental health care services within the Department of Veterans Affairs, but also barriers faced by patients in utilizing those services.

Book Factors Related to Utilization of Veterans Affairs VA Mental Healthcare Services by Female Veterans with Depression

Download or read book Factors Related to Utilization of Veterans Affairs VA Mental Healthcare Services by Female Veterans with Depression written by Lisa A. Williams and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Depression ranks as the second highest service-connected disability for female veterans. In 2015, approximately 26,500 female veterans, representing 6.5% of all females with service-connected disabilities, received compensation for major depressive disorder (U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, 2018). However, studies indicate that veterans, inclusive of female veterans, demonstrate low VA mental health services utilization rates for mental health problems, particularly depression (Gorman et al., 2016; Harpaz-Rotem et al, 2014; Miles et al., 2017). Davis et al. (2016) examined the use of mental health care services in 874 female veterans with depression and reported that 43.5% of the women did not receive adequate depression care. Evidence suggests that predisposing attitudes, caretaking, and employment, illness perceptions, alcohol use, and depression influences utilization of healthcare facilities. Based on the Andersen Healthcare Utilization Model, this study examined relationships between predisposing (attitudes, employment, caretaking), need factors (depression, illness perceptions, alcohol use) and utilization of mental healthcare services in 110 female veterans enrolled for care in an urban VA healthcare facility. Results indicated that the majority of the employed women (59%) reported employment barriers and the majority of women (55%) who were caring for either children or adults reported caretaking barriers to utilization of healthcare services. Overall, the women reported positive attitudes toward mental healthcare services, viewed depression as somewhat threatening rather than benign, and reported low alcohol intake. Based on the past twelve months, the majority of women (60%) had 1-8 appointments and 12% had 10 - 21 appointments. However, the majority of women (66%) had at least one "no-show" appointment within the past 12 months. Multivariate analyses indicated that depression and attitudes accounted for 10.9% of the variance in utilization, F = 6.089, p = .003. Average and high levels of depression moderated the relationship between attitudes and utilization, p = .02, R2 = .22.

Book Women Veterans

Download or read book Women Veterans written by G.L.A. Harris and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-03-14 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women who fight in wars also have to fight for their right to do so. But what are the obstacles impeding their progress in achieving equal status as both active service members and as veterans? This book, written by a team of female veterans and military scholars, demonstrates the ways in which women service members and veterans experience a unique set of challenges when attempting to both honorably serve their country and reintegrate into civilian society following military service. These challenges include – but are not limited to – discrimination, staggering rates of suicide, and barriers to obtaining treatment for military sexual trauma and other critical benefits through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Women Veterans: Lifting the Veil of Invisibility examines current service-related policies and gender in the military’s hierarchical power structure. Here, a confluence of white male privilege and entitlement, the culture of domination, and the effeminization of the enemy manifest themselves as a backlash against women, calling into question a woman’s agency and her very status as a citizen. Special attention in the book is paid to the civil-military divide, representative bureaucracy, and the function of the military and civilian justice systems. Moreover, the need for appropriate healthcare policies and structures is examined within a ‘wicked problems’ framework. The authors conclude that the responsibility for women veterans, and all veterans for that matter, must become a matter of compelling government interest. This ground-breaking book is required reading for practitioners of public policy and administration with an interest in military and veterans affairs, public health, NGOs and activist groups, as well as scholars of gender and public service, public personnel management, and nonprofit management.
