Book Fitness Costs and Benefits of Female Song

Download or read book Fitness Costs and Benefits of Female Song written by Michelle L. Hall and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2017-09-11 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bird song, traditionally regarded as primarily a male trait, is in fact widespread among female songbirds and was probably present in the ancestor of modern songbirds (Odom et al 2014 Nature Communications). These recent findings challenge the view that sexual dimorphism in the expression and complexity of song is largely the outcome of sexual selection on males. It is now clear that understanding the evolution of bird song requires explaining variation within and among species in the expression and complexity of female song. To do this, we need a better understanding of the nature of variation in female song in different contexts and systems, as well as the fitness costs and benefits of variation in the expression and complexity of female song. This Research Topic draws together current research on female song with the goal of understanding the fitness costs and benefits of the diversity of female singing behaviour apparent among songbirds. It includes articles ranging from single-species studies investigating how female song varies with context and contrasts with male song, to comparative analyses exploring relationships between female song and ecological, social, and other factors, as well as opinion pieces.

Book Women s Fitness in 15 minutes

Download or read book Women s Fitness in 15 minutes written by Robert Duffy and published by BX.Plans Ltd.. This book was released on 2020-07-27 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Population of the United Kingdom has now reached 67 million. 40% (approximately 27 million) are not classed as ’physically active’. This is a shocking statistic and it is getting worse. The decline in physical activity starts at around 24 years and it is all downhill from there! The ’unique’ fifteen minute plan means that anyone from 18 - 80 can quickly reach their optimum fitness level in just 15 minutes a day. They can then maintain their level by exercising just 3 times a week. The plan is based on The Royal Canadian Air Force BX Plan and has been the core source of fitness in the Canadian Airforce for over 50years. No special equipment is needed: all of the exercises are ’free form’ and can be done at home, in the office or out and about if you travel in your work. There is no need to join a gym so there are no fees to pay. No group memberships although the plans are really good for families and groups of friends. The system is graded so to start with the exercises are quite simple and gentle. You move on to the second set of exercises at your own pace. All of the exercises are illustrated and there are charts to help you plot your progress. Easy steps to get you fit and keep you fit in less time than it probably takes to drive to the gym. Fully illustrated, and with integral progress charts, fitness can be fun. With a minimum amount of space and no costs the Need2Know Plan is ideal for anyone from 18 - 80.

Book Let s Get Physical

Download or read book Let s Get Physical written by Danielle Friedman and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2022-01-04 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A captivating blend of reportage and personal narrative that explores the untold history of women’s exercise culture--from jogging and Jazzercise to Jane Fonda--and how women have parlayed physical strength into other forms of power. For American women today, working out is as accepted as it is expected, fueling a multibillion-dollar fitness industrial complex. But it wasn’t always this way. For much of the twentieth century, sweating was considered unladylike and girls grew up believing physical exertion would cause their uterus to literally fall out. It was only in the sixties that, thanks to a few forward-thinking fitness pioneers, women began to move en masse. In Let's Get Physical, journalist Danielle Friedman reveals the fascinating hidden history of contemporary women’s fitness culture, chronicling in vivid, cinematic prose how exercise evolved from a beauty tool pitched almost exclusively as a way to “reduce” into one millions have harnessed as a path to mental, emotional, and physical well-being. Let’s Get Physical reclaims these forgotten origin stories—and shines a spotlight on the trailblazers who led the way. Each chapter uncovers the birth of a fitness movement that laid the foundation for working out today: the radical post-war pitch for women to break a sweat in their living rooms, the invention of barre in the “Swinging Sixties,” the promise of jogging as liberation in the seventies, the meteoric rise of aerobics and weight-training in the eighties, the explosion of yoga in the nineties, and the ongoing push for a more socially inclusive fitness culture—one that celebrates every body. Ultimately, it tells the story of how women discovered the joy of physical strength and competence—and how, by moving together to transform fitness from a privilege into a right, we can create a more powerful sisterhood.
