Book Understanding gender dynamics in the context of rural transformation processes

Download or read book Understanding gender dynamics in the context of rural transformation processes written by Colfer, C.J.P. and published by CIFOR. This book was released on 2020-12-02 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study set out to illustrate and understand how the ongoing processes of rural transformation are influencing women’s and men’s labor, and broader gender relations among the Kenyah. It examines the changes that have occurred in two Uma’ Jalan Kenyah villages in East Kalimantan – based on previous longterm ethnographic research (beginning in 1979 and continuing periodically until 2004), ending with a Rapid Rural Appraisal visit in 2019. Various development efforts have altered these peoples’ environment, from dense tropical rainforest in the 1970s, through extensive forest loss due successively to logging, industrial timber plantations and transmigration. Most recently oil palm plantations have flourished over much of the province (including the two study communities), prompting radical changes to people’s agricultural practices. Here, we examine the implications of these changes for men’s and women’s lives, roles and interactions. The most surprising finding is the continuation of comparatively equitable gender dynamics among the Kenyah. This is in the face of narratives and policies – from education, government, business and religion – with seriously marginalizing gender implications, to which the people are increasingly exposed.

Book Gender Relations in Forest Societies in Asia

Download or read book Gender Relations in Forest Societies in Asia written by Govind Kelkar and published by SAGE. This book was released on 2003-12-06 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Extrait de la couverture : "Of the numerous available studies on forest management in Asia, only a few mention the role of women or pay attention to gender relations. Even projects are largely designed in terms of households or communities where men are the decision-makers and the owners or managers of forests. This important volume views gender relations as a crucial factor in the management of land and forests, and maintains that the continuing invisibility of women in these areas only compounds poverty, shortages, and the increased workloads of forest-based women. Based on fieldwork conducted in several forest societies in China, Thailand, India and Malaysia, the contributors explore the changes in gender relations within indigenous communities, from matrilineal and/or gender egalitarian systems to ones where male domination is the norm."

Book The gender box A framework for analysing gender roles in forest management

Download or read book The gender box A framework for analysing gender roles in forest management written by Carol J Pierce Colfer and published by CIFOR. This book was released on 2013-01-23 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recognising widespread uncertainty about how to address gender within the forestry world (from researchers, as well as natural resource, development and conservation practitioners), this paper strives to provide targeted guidance. We divide gender methods into three main approaches, based on the availability of resources. In the first section, we provide a brief discussion of theory and method. Then, after discussing some all-purpose methods, we classify methods loosely into categories of ‘quick and [more or less] dirty’; systematic ‘academic’ studies; and collaborative studies. We argue that although there is legitimate space for all three approaches, the last is the most likely to result in long-term and meaningful improvements in forests and human well being.

Book Masculinities in Forests

  • Author : Carol J. Pierce Colfer
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2020-09-20

Download or read book Masculinities in Forests written by Carol J. Pierce Colfer and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-09-20 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Masculinities in Forests: Representations of Diversity demonstrates the wide variability in ideas about, and practice of, masculinity in different forests, and how these relate to forest management. While forestry is widely considered a masculine domain, a significant portion of the literature on gender and development focuses on the role of women, not men. This book addresses this gap and also highlights how there are significant, demonstrable differences in masculinities from forest to forest. The book develops a simple conceptual framework for considering masculinities, one which both acknowledges the stability or enduring quality of masculinities, but also the significant masculinity-related options available to individual men within any given culture. The author draws on her own experiences, building on her long-term experience working globally in the conservation and development worlds, also observing masculinities among such professionals. The core of the book examines masculinities, based on long-term ethnographic research in the rural Pacific Northwest of the US; Long Segar, East Kalimantan; and Sitiung, West Sumatra, both in Indonesia. The author concludes by pulling together the various strands of masculine identities and discussing the implications of these various versions of masculinity for forest management. This book will be essential reading for students and scholars of forestry, gender studies and conservation and development, as well as practitioners and NGOs working in these fields. Book Healing Powers and Modernity

Download or read book Healing Powers and Modernity written by Linda H. Connor and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2001-02-28 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is the current state of traditional healing practices in contemporary Asian societies? How are their practitioners faring in the encounter with Western science and its biomedical approach? How are traditional healing practices being transformed by the politics of health within the modern nation-state and by the processes of commodification typical of modern economies? How do patients in Asian societies see the various healing options now open to them? The authors, all of whom are anthropologists, observe the clashes and complementarities between traditional therapies and biomedicine, which, in its many manifestations, is the dominant form of medicine supported by national governments, and is emblematic of the modernity to which they aspire. Some of the medical traditions, such as the sophisticated herbal-humoral systems of Tibetan medicine and Indian Ayurveda, are becoming well known in the West, both through scholarly study and through their increasing popularity with Western patients interested in their healing potential. This book adds a new dimension to their study, being focused unlike most previous writing on practice rather than textual tradition.

Book Representation Identity and Multiculturalism in Sarawak

Download or read book Representation Identity and Multiculturalism in Sarawak written by Zawawi Ibrahim and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The characteristics and processes of identity formation and representation have been crucial preoccupations in social science and historical studies of Sarawak and the wider Borneo. We have examined Brooke and colonial policies on ethnicity, and political party formation, state-federal relations, nationalism and ethnicity in the post-independence period. We have considered inter-ethnic relations and the encounters between minorities and the state in the context of development and socio-economic change. However, Professor Zawawi?s book demonstrates that in spite of this level of interest and activity there is still much to do. We have tended to concentrate on particular groups at the expense of others. Detailed studies of the Bidayuhs and Malays, for example, are few. We still know very little about ethnic relations in urban settings and the politics of identity in relation to tourism development. We need to explore much more thoroughly the interrelationships between ethnicity and other principles of social organisation, including class, gender and patron-clientage.--
