Book Felix Holt the True Story

Download or read book Felix Holt the True Story written by P L Quinn and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2017-06-28 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Felix Holt, the True Story is a critical examination of Felix Holt, the Radical (1866) by George Eliot. Since the novel's publication, it has automatically been assumed that the fictional East Midlands market town of Treby Magna (where the novel is set) "must" be based upon the Nuneaton of George Eliot's childhood. However, this assumption has made the novel largely "unreadable." Whilst Eliot's childhood and her earlier novels are informative towards the construction of Felix Holt, the Radical, this study proposes that the Treby community is based upon the East Midlands market town of Leicester - by far the oldest East Midlands community. It is also proposed that Eliot wanted to write a novel with a similar impact to Cranford by Elizabeth Gaskell (1851 - 1853) in which the community finally pulls together. Hence, it is determined that Eliot wrote Felix Holt, the Radical, as a means of unifying the varying rifts of "Christian eclecticism" into her mode of Humanism.

Book The Cambridge Companion to George Eliot

Download or read book The Cambridge Companion to George Eliot written by George Levine and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2019-01-31 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This second edition of The Cambridge Companion to George Eliot includes several new chapters, providing an essential introduction to all aspects of Eliot's life and writing. Accessible essays by some of the most distinguished scholars of Victorian literature provide lucid and original insights into the work of one of the most important writers of the nineteenth century, author most famously of Middlemarch, Adam Bede, The Mill on the Floss, and Daniel Deronda. From an introduction that traces her originality as a realist novelist, the book moves on to extensive considerations of each of Eliot's novels, her life and her publishing history. Chapters address the problems of money, philosophy, religion, politics, gender and science, as they are developed in her novels. With its supplementary materials, including a chronology and an extensive section of suggested readings, this Companion is an invaluable tool for scholars and students alike.

Book In Black and Gold

Download or read book In Black and Gold written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2022-06-08 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Black and Gold indicates that opposed styles of poetry reveal subterranean correspondences that occasionally meet and run together. Austerity or tomfoolery are two of the many valid responses to the human condition that create the contiguous traditions that cannot help touching and reacting to each other. The poetry discussed in this book deals with the relation of individuals to strange or to familiar landscapes, and what this means to their own sense of displacement or rootedness; with the use of history as an escape from or as a challenge to an apparently failing present; and with the role of nationalism either as a refuge for angry frustration, or as a weapon against the affronting world, or as an ambivalent loyalty that needs to be scoured, or as all three. Here we find poetry as a means of discovering true or false allegiances and valid or invalid public and private identities; poetry as a medium for exploring the uses of the demotic in confronting the breakdowns and injustices of modern democracy; poetry as play in the midst of private and public woe; poetry as a spiritual quest, as a spiritual scourging, as a wrestling with spiritual absences; and poetry as an intermittent and sporadic commemoration of the triumphs and delights of epiphanic encounters with the physical world.

Book Memory and History in George Eliot

Download or read book Memory and History in George Eliot written by Hao Li and published by Springer. This book was released on 2000-04-18 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the interrelations between communal memory and the sense of history in George Eliot's novels by focusing on issues such as memory and narrative, memory and oblivion, memory and time, and the interactions between personal, communal and national memories. Hao Li offers a fresh critical reading informed by major nineteenth-century theories and argues for a reappraisal of George Eliot's complex understanding of the dialects of memory and history, an understanding that both integrates and transcends the positivist and the romantic-historical approaches of her time.
