Book excerpt: This report emphasizes the role that employee engagement plays in improving Federal agency outcomes. A focus on strategies to further engage the Federal work force is critical as agencies attempt to improve their operations within budget constraints, and as they face increasing numbers of retirement-eligible employees in a labor market where there is intense competition for top talent. This report examines what engages Federal employees -- that is, what contributes to a heightened connection between Federal employees and their work or their organization. It explores the extent that different groups of employees are engaged and, more importantly, discusses how employee engagement relates to improved Federal agency outcomes. Illustrations.

Book Federal Employee Satisfaction

Download or read book Federal Employee Satisfaction written by Nicole C. Phillips and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 57 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Previous scholarship has identified employee job satisfaction as an important driver in executing organizational objectives and satisfied employees are often productive employees, engaging in positive behaviors that help to accomplish the larger mission of the organization in which they work. Employee compensation (pay and benefits), opportunities for workplace advancement, and the utilization of the employee's knowledge, skills, and abilities as tested as the primary factors that exert an influence on public employee job satisfaction. Multivariate regression analysis of these variables strongly supports the original research hypotheses and strong positive relationships are observed between public employee job satisfaction and compensation, opportunities for workplace advancement, and utilization of knowledge, skills, and abilities. Opportunities for the federal government to better utilize this information and produce more satisfied public servants are discussed.

Book The Relationship of Organizational Trust and Job Satisfaction

Download or read book The Relationship of Organizational Trust and Job Satisfaction written by Phuong Callaway and published by Universal-Publishers. This book was released on 2007 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The issues of trust and job satisfaction have taken on a greater strategic importance in organizations since the post-Enron scandal. Without trust or the lack of it among organizational members and between management and employees, organizational communication, knowledge management, organizational performance, and involvement may tend to close down. Trust has been identified as a crucial ingredient for organizational effectiveness. A linkage between trust and job satisfaction in private organizations has been established by researchers; however, in the U.S. federal government, the linkage between organizational trust and job satisfaction has not yet been studied. This study, therefore, explores the relationship between organizational trust and job satisfaction in seven selected small, medium, and large U.S. federal agencies. This study indicated that there are no significant differences between males and females, however, significant differences in attitudes between supervisors and nonsupervisors were found regarding what good communications meant and how they interpret the question, "top management truly listens to employees' concerns." Nonsupervisors tend to disagree more frequently than supervisors. The study also found that there are significant association between gender, age group, job location, position, and occupation and agency. The differences in attitudes between supervisors and nonsupervisors about what would make communications seem good and what would contribute to the belief that top management listens to employees' concerns lead to the conclusion that there is a disconnection among organizational members and among management and employees. This disconnection may lead to mistrust, job dissatisfaction and the difficulty in attracting and retention of human talents.

Book The Relationship of Work and Family Life Balance to Job Satisfaction for Government Executives

Download or read book The Relationship of Work and Family Life Balance to Job Satisfaction for Government Executives written by Christina Frye and published by . This book was released on 2018-04-18 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Relationship of Work and Family Life Balance to Job Satisfaction for Government Executives encompasses breakthrough research and concepts from Dr. Christina Frye. Today's workplace culture for executives in the federal government is just as strenuous as those in the private and nonprofit industries. The dynamics within the federal workforce are generously impacted by the beliefs and attitudes of government leaders. Therefore, leaders can learn how their decisions really impact the workforce and the consequences therein whether good or bad. Are workplace flexibilities the answer to addressing the needs of employees as portrayed within the results of the Federal Employee Viewpoint Survey, or would employees benefit more from eliminating pay gaps between male and female staff for the same work, a diverse and inclusive workforce with managerial guide to the religious calendar observances recognized for the twenty-six largest cultures practiced in the United States, supporting innovation and creativity within all ranks to recruit and retain millennials? This book outlays techniques that can assist executives with establishing a powerful workforce that's capable of creating a path of balance, job satisfaction, and prosperity for all. The changes in diversity within the U.S. workforce are growing rapidly; as a result, there has been a dramatic increase in the engagement and legal pressures placed on executives and managers who must understand social and cultural diversity in the workplace and the necessity of making decisions that are sensitive to these cultural and religious differences. Executives make decisions that impact job satisfaction and work and family life balance within the workplace. Employees' cultural obligations can and frequently do conflict with their ability to perform their assigned duties at acceptable performance levels; this must be taken into account by executives within the workplace and dealing fairly with all employees on the issue of religion, race, and other cultural differences. 58

Book Job Satisfaction in the Federal Workforce

Download or read book Job Satisfaction in the Federal Workforce written by Margaret Anna Samotyj and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is predicted that 40% of the federal workforce will retire between 2006 and 2015 (U.S. Office of Personnel Management). As a result, a major challenge facing the federal government in the future will be attracting and retaining talented men and women. This study investigates the relationship between job satisfaction and non-monetary rewards in the federal workforce. Using data from the Office of Personnel Management's Federal Human Capital Survey 2006, regression analysis is applied to assess the effects of non-monetary rewards impact on federal job satisfaction. The conclusions reached in this analysis show that non-monetary rewards are important factors contributing to job satisfaction for employees in the federal government. Specific findings include that satisfaction with pay explains only 16 percent of job satisfaction. The effect of having a sense of personal accomplishment through one's work and being able to be an active participant in the decision making process had a greater impact on job satisfaction than pay. Given these findings, the satisfaction and the ability to retain highly capable federal workers will not just depend on pay but on these other non-monetary factors. Overall, these results will help to determine what changes can be made to policies to increase federal job satisfaction in order to help recruit and retain the new generation of federal employees.

Download or read book Public Service Retention Do Federal Employees Views of Their Contribution to Mission Relate to Turnover Intention written by Katherine O'Connor and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. Federal Government is attempting reforms and recruitment strategies to combat a two-part demographic challenge, the aging federal workforce and a more competitive market for younger employees. While many of these efforts focus on mimicking strategies from the private sector, a growing field of evidence in public management studies highlights the value of uniquely public sector principles that could help recruitment, retention, and performance. In particular, there is evidence from studies of state and local government organizations that employees’ sense of mission is linked to greater satisfaction and organizational commitment. However, this relationship has not been tested for the Federal Government population that has a wide range of sectors of public work. This study tested the promising findings about mission and its relationship to organizational commitment within the Federal Government and, for a narrower focus, the subset of Department of Defense civilian employees. To achieve this, this study uses the 2019 Federal Employee Viewpoint Survey, which is a workplace survey administered annually to federal workers. The results of this study indicate that federal employees who do not perceive how their work contributes to mission are more likely to intend to leave the Federal Government. Beyond mission, the results support evidence from other studies that employee engagement and fairness in pay are relevant factors for employee commitment. This study makes a notable link of the importance of mission to the Federal Government population that could be a useful tool for federal managers to retain committed employees, the bedrock for administering many other federal policies and programs.
