Book excerpt: When Nathalie Chambers and her husband, David, first took over Madrona Farm, 27 acres on southern Vancouver Island with a deep history, they never thought their small-scale agricultural business would blossom into an international political act. As pressures from heirs, land developers and industrial farmers grew alongside their rows of organically produced food, the Chambers took action. Considered by many to be revolutionary and by some to be rebellious, their story opened many eyes to the future of food. Saving Farmland introduces readers to stories of lost farmland and bees saving lives. It shows how sustainability, ecosystems and biodiversity transcend the paradox of our own, man-made losses. Saving Farmland describes overcoming obstacles, choosing models, identifying vital farmland, building community and fundraising. Concluding stories of commonly shared land, international trusts, regained farmland and several heroes provide ongoing inspiration. This practical book teems with fascinating history and facts. Book Food Fears

  • Author : Alison Blay-Palmer
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2016-04-15
  • ISBN : 1317134389
  • Pages : 196 pages

Download or read book Food Fears written by Alison Blay-Palmer and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-15 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The industrial food system of the West is increasingly perceived as problematic. The physical, social and intellectual distance between consumers and their food stems from a food system that privileges quantity and efficiency over quality, with an underlying assumption that food is a commodity, rather than a source of nourishment and pleasure. In the wake of various food and health scares, there is a growing demand from consumers to change the food they eat, which in turn acts as a catalyst for the industry to adapt and for alternative systems to evolve. Drawing on a wealth of empirical research into mainstream and alternative North American food systems, this book discusses how sustainable, grass roots, local food systems offer a template for meaningful individual activism as a way to bring about change from the bottom up, while at the same time creating pressure for policy changes at all levels of government. This movement signals a shift away from market economy principles and reflects a desire to embody social and ecological values as the foundation for future growth.

Faith, she decides, is what she wants to pass on. But how do we transmit our faith to the next generation in a world that has lost its regard for the family? Owens shows in vivid detail how we can live in all the ups and downs of family life and still impart our faith as a true fulfillment, not merely as a cultural appendage. In a beautiful, sensitive, and heartwarming manner, Virginia Stem Owens evokes many memories as she recalls the joys and sorrows of her own large and sometimes difficult and eccentric Texas clan, as well as the experiences of others, from Russian novelists to Texas bank robbers. A Feast of Families is a rich and rewarding repast.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explore the bucolic Okanagan Valley of south-central British Columbia with Okanagan Slow Road. A compilation of the best of the region's food, drink, and recreation, the book reveals local culinary secrets: crusty double-baked bread, lavender-infused pepper, seasonal vegetables, dark red cherries, sinfully rich double-cream brie, and farm-fresh eggs with yolks so dark they will startle. And of course, the wines. What would delicious local food be without famous vintages from the unique Okanagan terroir? Although not a definitive guide to Okanagan wines, this book is a personal journey from southern desert wineries with their "big reds" through to the northern Okanagan where crisp whites rule, and includes a list of the many wineries worth visiting. Explore the entire length of the Okanagan Valley, with experiences such as spying a rare canyon wren, cycling the historic Kettle Valley Railroad across heart-stopping trestle bridges or among neatly planted vineyards, hiking through fields of spring flowers, paddling in a protected bay, and climbing on the world-famous gneiss of the Skaha Bluffs. Use the wonderful resource of Okanagan Valley farmers' markets at the back of the book to guide your shopping in the region. Eat local, buy local, cook the food yourself, pair dishes with local vintages, and have a lot of fun in the process. Take your time. Slow down. Taste. Smell. Those are the messages of Okanagan Slow Road.

Book excerpt: When Ann was just a little girl, in love with the world, her beautiful smile was dimmed by an evil witch who was working to steal the gift of her innocence. The witch would have taken it all, but luckily, she was discovered—and her plan thwarted—by the love of Ann’s mother, Josephine, who cast the witch out and warned her never to return. It took years before Ann’s ability to trust and find joy in the world started to return, but at around that same time, she and her family were forced to move away from her beloved home to take care of her newly widowed grandmother and help her run the family farm. In time, things start to feel like home once again, but then a strange dream leads her into an unlikely adventure, filled with danger and magic, as she falls victim to the witch once more and finds herself paired with Roteck, the crown prince of the Realm of Chaltay—himself a victim of the witch’s evil machinations—trained at the Palace of Colours, and quested to end the witches reign of terror once and for all. On their side, they have the aid of Cerulea, a tree-nymph, Kempolar, a dwarf, and the ever-watchful moon, but will that be enough to bring peace to the kingdom? A beautifully crafted tale of a storied land peopled with magical creatures, Heir of the Moon takes its readers on a thoughtful and fantastical journey of courage, lost innocence, and the transformative power of love.

Book The Huron Wendat Feast of the Dead

Download or read book The Huron Wendat Feast of the Dead written by Erik R. Seeman and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2011-03-01 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Two thousand Wendat (Huron) Indians stood on the edge of an enormous burial pit . . . they held in their arms the bones of roughly seven hundred deceased friends and family members. The Wendats had lovingly scraped and cleaned the bones of the corpses that had decomposed on the scaffolds. They awaited only the signal from the master of the ritual to place the bones in the pit. This was the great Feast of the Dead.” Witnesses to these Wendat burial rituals were European colonists, French Jesuit missionaries in particular. Rather than being horrified by these unfamiliar native practices, Europeans recognized the parallels between them and their own understanding of death and human remains. Both groups believed that deceased souls traveled to the afterlife; both believed that elaborate mortuary rituals ensured the safe transit of the soul to the supernatural realm; and both believed in the power of human bones. Appreciating each other’s funerary practices allowed the Wendats and French colonists to find common ground where there seemingly would be none. Erik R. Seeman analyzes these encounters, using the Feast of the Dead as a metaphor for broader Indian-European relations in North America. His compelling narrative gives undergraduate students of early America and the Atlantic World a revealing glimpse into this fascinating—and surprising—meeting of cultures.
