Book excerpt: Fausto Melotti's uniquely lyrical sculptures This co-publication with Hauser & Wirth will be released on the occasion of their inaugural exhibition of Fausto Melotti, curated by Douglas Fogle at Hauser & Wirth New York. With never before published historical material from the archive of the Fausto Melotti Foundation, this extensively illustrated publication will provide insight into the work of an artist yet to be discovered by the American public. The late Italian sculptor, installation artist, and poet Fausto Melotti (1901-1986) is admired for his unique contribution to the development of mid-century European Modernism. The artist, who was active for six decades, moved freely between mediums, incorporating brass, stainless steel, ceramics and fabric into uniquely lyrical sculptures. Creating drawings and mixed media works, the artist drew from his rich background in music, mathematics and engineering. The book will feature a text by Douglas Fogle, an independent curator and writer based in Los Angeles, who has previously served as curator at the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; the Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh and the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis. Exhibition: Hauser & Wirth, New York, 20/4-18/6/2016

Book excerpt: Multimedia experiments are everywhere in contemporary art, but the collaboration and conflict associated with multimedia is not a new phenomenon. From opera to the symphonic poem to paintings inspired by music, many attempts have been made to pair sounds with pictures and to combine the arts of time and space. Counterpoints explores this artistic evolution from ancient times to the present day. The book’s main focus is music and its relationship with painting, sculpture, and architecture. Philippe Junod draws on theoretical and practical examples to show how different art movements throughout history have embraced or rejected creative combinations. He explains how the Renaissance, neoclassicism, and certain brands of modernism tried to claim the purity of each mode of expression, while other movements such as romanticism, symbolism, and surrealism called for a fusion of the arts. Counterpoints is a unique cultural history, one that provides a critical understanding of a popular but previously unheralded art form.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unlike any time before in our lives, we have access to vast amounts of free information. With the right tools, we can start to make sense of all this data to see patterns and trends that would otherwise be invisible to us. By transforming numbers into graphical shapes, we allow readers to understand the stories those numbers hide. In this practical introduction to understanding and using information graphics, you'll learn how to use data visualizations as tools to see beyond lists of numbers and variables and achieve new insights into the complex world around us. Regardless of the kind of data you're working with-business, science, politics, sports, or even your own personal finances-this book will show you how to use statistical charts, maps, and explanation diagrams to spot the stories in the data and learn new things from it. You'll also get to peek into the creative process of some of the world's most talented designers and visual journalists, including Condé Nast Traveler's John Grimwade, National Geographic Magazine's Fernando Baptista, The New York Times' Steve Duenes, The Washington Post's Hannah Fairfield, Hans Rosling of the Gapminder Foundation, Stanford's Geoff McGhee, and European superstars Moritz Stefaner, Jan Willem Tulp, Stefanie Posavec, and Gregor Aisch. The book also includes a DVD-ROM containing over 90 minutes of video lessons that expand on core concepts explained within the book and includes even more inspirational information graphics from the world's leading designers. The first book to offer a broad, hands-on introduction to information graphics and visualization, The Functional Art reveals: * Why data visualization should be thought of as "functional art" rather than fine art * How to use color, type, and other graphic tools to make your information graphics more effective, not just better looking * The science of how our brains perceive and remember information * Best practices for creating interactive information graphics * A comprehensive look at the creative process behind successful information graphics * An extensive gallery of inspirational work from the world's top designers and visual artists On the DVD-ROM: In this introductory video course on information graphics, Alberto Cairo goes into greater detail with even more visual examples of how to create effective information graphics that function as practical tools for aiding perception. You'll learn how to: incorporate basic design principles in your visualizations, create simple interfaces for interactive graphics, and choose the appropriate type of graphic forms for your data. Cairo also deconstructs successful information graphics from The New York Times and National Geographic magazine with sketches and images not shown in the book.

Book excerpt: The planning, production and cultural development of a company that has been one of the keystones of Italian design for almost sixty years. Writing the history of Tecno, a company founded in 1953 by the Borsani brothers, does not mean just investigating the evolution of a significant player in the industrial production of furniture, but also tracing out a fundamental chapter in interior design at a global level. Many Tecno projects have been designed by some of the most prominent international architects and designers, including Vico Magistretti, Roberto Mango, Robin Day, Gio Ponti, Mario Bellini, Norman Foster, Ricardo Bofill, Jean-Michelle Wilmotte, Emilio Ambasz, Giorgetto Giugiaro, Gae Aulenti, and Piero Lissoni. This book was released on 2021-12-14 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past two decades, scholarship in architectural history has transformed, moving away from design studio pedagogy and postmodern historicism to draw instead from trends in critical theory focusing on gender, race, the environment, and more recently global history, connecting to revisionist trends in other fields. With examples across space and time—from medieval European coin trials and eighteenth-century Haitian revolutionary buildings to Weimar German construction firms and present-day African refugee camps—Writing Architectural History considers the impact of these shifting institutional landscapes and disciplinary positionings for architectural history. Contributors reveal how new methodological approaches have developed interdisciplinary research beyond the traditional boundaries of art history departments and architecture schools, and explore the challenges and opportunities presented by conventional and unorthodox forms of evidence and narrative, the tools used to write history.

Book Cold War American Exhibitions of Italian Art and Design

Download or read book Cold War American Exhibitions of Italian Art and Design written by Antje Gamble and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-07-13 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Enriching the existing scholarship on this important exhibition, Italy at Work: Her Renaissance in Design Today (1950–53), this book shows the dynamic role art, specifically sculpture, played in constructing both Italian and American culture after World War II (WWII). Moving beyond previous studies, this book looks to the archival sources and beyond the history of design for a greater understanding of the stakes of the show. First, the book considers art’s role in this exhibition’s import—prominent mid-century sculptors like Giacomo Manzù, Fausto Melotti, and Lucio Fontana were included. Second, it foregrounds the particular role sculpture was able to play in transcending the boundaries of fine art and craft to showcase innovative formalist aesthetics of modernism without falling in the critiques of modernism playing out on the international stage in terms of state funding for art. Third, the book engages with the larger socio-political use of art as a cultural soft power both within the American and Italian contexts. Fourth, it highlights the important role race and culture of Italians and Italian-Americans played in the installation and success of this exhibition. Lastly, therefore, this study connects an investigation of modernist sculpture, modern design, post-war exhibitions, sociology, and transatlantic politics and economics to highlight the important role sculpture played in post-war Italian and American cultural production. The book will be of interest to scholars working in art history, design history, museum studies, Italian studies, and American studies.
