Book excerpt: “A debut poetry collection showcasing both a fierce and tender new voice.”—Booklist “Elegant and playful . . . The poet invents new forms and updates classic ones.”—Elle “[Fatimah] Asghar interrogates divisions along lines of nationality, age, and gender, illuminating the forces by which identity is fixed or flexible.”—The New Yorker NAMED ONE OF THE TOP TEN BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY THE NEW YORK PUBLIC LIBRARY • FINALIST FOR THE LAMBDA LITERARY AWARD an aunt teaches me how to tell an edible flower from a poisonous one. just in case, I hear her say, just in case. From a co-creator of the Emmy-nominated web series Brown Girls comes an imaginative, soulful debut poetry that collection captures the experiences of being a young Pakistani Muslim woman in contemporary America. Orphaned as a child, Fatimah Asghar grapples with coming of age and navigating questions of sexuality and race without the guidance of a mother or father. These poems at once bear anguish, joy, vulnerability, and compassion, while also exploring the many facets of violence: how it persists within us, how it is inherited across generations, and how it manifests itself in our relationships. In experimental forms and language both lyrical and raw, Asghar seamlessly braids together marginalized people’s histories with her own understanding of identity, place, and belonging. Praise for If They Come for Us “In forms both traditional . . . and unorthodox . . . Asghar interrogates divisions along lines of nationality, age, and gender, illuminating the forces by which identity is fixed or flexible. Most vivid and revelatory are pieces such as ‘Boy,’ whose perspicacious turns and irreverent idiom conjure the rich, jagged textures of a childhood shadowed by loss.”—The New Yorker “[Asghar’s] debut poetry collection cemented her status as one of the city’s greatest present-day poets. . . . A stunning work of art that tackles place, race, sexuality and violence. These poems—both personal and historical, both celebratory and aggrieved—are unquestionably powerful in a way that would doubtless make both Gwendolyn Brooks and Harriet Monroe proud.”—Chicago Review of Books “Taut lines, vivid language, and searing images range cover to cover. . . . Inventive, sad, gripping, and beautiful.”—Library Journal (starred review)

"What we are given in the poems that make up After is nothing short of sorcery—the intimate (witch)craft Fatimah Asghar uses to lay bare our most human emotions in our most mythical bodies stuns with grace and force. Let us be grateful for a poet so gifted with the ability to remember, re-member, & reimagine life into lyric to show us what living fully is like after loss, after trauma, after healing, after joy, after what comes for us next. This book is for anyone who has survived, anyone who knows what it's like to be low and what it means to rise. After is only the beginning of many volumes of incredible work from one of our most imaginative & honest emerging voices."—Danez Smith "Poems are often called risky. Poems are sometimes called brave. Poems rarely deserve either epithet. The poems in this collection are of that most rare deserving ilk. In AFTER Fatimah Asghar displays for us the complicated polyrhythm that is the human experience. She weaves desire, hurt, devotion, and violation in such a way as to render a reader wide open. Do not be fooled by the softness of care evident in the craft behind each word. These poems, quite simply, go hard."—Nate Marshall

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We live in an Islamophobic world, where Muslim people are constantly under attack, and must prove their innocence when they’ve not even committed a crime. We also live in a world of rigid gender roles and gender violence, where women, gender non-conforming and trans people are victims of violence, and have their gender expressions, freedoms, and desires policed. There’s pressure from both Muslims and non-Muslims to fit into severe stereotypes of Muslim identity and the ways in which it is acceptable to be Muslim. The BreakBeat Poets Vol. 3: Halal If You Hear Me is a celebration of intersectional identity that dispels the notion that there is one correct way to be a Muslim, particularly for women, gender non-conforming, and trans people. In holding space for multiple intersecting identities, the anthology celebrates and protects those identities.

Book The Rape of Fatimah Or Worl Do for Fraid

Download or read book The Rape of Fatimah Or Worl Do for Fraid written by Nabie Yayah Swaray and published by Africa Research and Publications. This book was released on 2008 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This play is a metaphor and allegory for the rape of Sierra Leone and the innocent young girls, who like Fatimah, lost their virginity in the most violent and inhumane way. Let the play speak for those victims: "For murder, though it has no tongue, will speak with the most miraculous organ." It is an African tragedy that seeks to unearth the complexities of Africa’s political and moral dilemma. In short, the rape of Fatimah is the rape of Africa. The only cruel irony about this rape is that Africans are to blame.

Download or read book How Do We Look written by Fatimah Tobing Rony and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2021-10-18 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In How Do We Look? Fatimah Tobing Rony draws on transnational images of Indonesian women as a way to theorize what she calls visual biopolitics—the ways visual representation determines which lives are made to matter more than others. Rony outlines the mechanisms of visual biopolitics by examining Paul Gauguin’s 1893 portrait of Annah la Javanaise—a trafficked thirteen-year-old girl found wandering the streets of Paris—as well as US ethnographic and documentary films. In each instance, the figure of the Indonesian woman is inextricably tied to discourses of primitivism, savagery, colonialism, exoticism, and genocide. Rony also focuses on acts of resistance to visual biopolitics in film, writing, and photography. These works, such as Rachmi Diyah Larasati’s The Dance that Makes You Vanish, Vincent Monnikendam’s Mother Dao (1995), and the collaborative films of Nia Dinata, challenge the naturalized methods of seeing that justify exploitation, dehumanization, and early death of people of color. By theorizing the mechanisms of visual biopolitics, Rony elucidates both its violence and its vulnerability.

Book Working with Complexity in PTSD

Download or read book Working with Complexity in PTSD written by Hannah Murray and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-07-14 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This accessible, evidence-based book provides readers with a practical framework to understand, formulate, and treat PTSD using the cognitive model while creatively adapting for complexity. Cognitive therapy for PTSD is a highly effective treatment, but aspects of clinical complexity can complicate treatment and limit its effectiveness. Trauma memories themselves can be complex, the associated meanings can resist change and people may struggle to engage with them without feeling overwhelmed. Problems that commonly arise alongside PTSD add to clinical complexity, such as comorbid psychological or physical disorders, social problems, and ongoing risks. Bringing together the science and art of therapy, this book demonstrates how to approach these issues by holding firm to the principles of CBT, whilst flexing and creatively adapting techniques for each unique circumstance. Rich case studies, top tips, and frequently asked questions are used throughout to demonstrate the approach. Written by clinicians for clinicians, the book synthesizes the latest research into a practical treatment manual to help readers overcome obstacles in PTSD treatment and ‘supercharge’ their therapy skills.

Download or read book Sufism The Soul of Islam written by Sultan ul Ashiqeen Sultan Mohammad Najib ur Rehman and published by Sultan ul Faqr Publications. This book was released on 2020-10-30 with total page 1026 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sufism is a journey. A miraculous one. Filled with hurdles yet easy for those who are born pure and those who choose. It is the choices and not always the actions as they could be deceptive. Sufism is the spiritual and mystical aspect of Islam. The esoteric cosmos has every spiritual blessing, notion and trial. In the universe of Sufism, the destination is being One with the Divine Essence (tawhid) and the dear friend and leader on this path is the spiritual guide. Motivation and power to accomplish comes from loving Allah only, as Sultan Bahoo has famously said, “Only Allah! Everything other than Allah is lust.” The names Allah and Mohammad (Ism-e-Allah Zaat and Ism-e-Mohammad) are sustenance which strengthen the very soul of man. After all it is the journey of soul. Deep respect embedded in the heart for the family of Prophet Mohammad (peace be upon him) is like Noah’s Arc and the sacred Companions are guiding stars. The Mohammadan Assembly is the determining factor declaring one worthy to embark on the quest of Sufism or to demote or worse to forever halt. Wolves, brigands and the negative powers that drive one away are Satan, innerself (an-nafs) and the mortal world. Sharia is the door into this esoteric world. This journey of gnosis has its own set of guidelines. These can come in the form of inspiration, unveiling, waham (inward conversation with Hoo ھُو) and ilm-e-dawat (communication with sacred souls of shrines). This book is all and MORE! A must read for every spiritual traveller.
