Book Fatigue of Steel Bridge Decks

Download or read book Fatigue of Steel Bridge Decks written by Timothy Russell Gurney and published by Bernan Press(PA). This book was released on 1992 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A broadly-based research programme on orthotropic steel bridge decks, led by D.E. Nunn, was carried out between 1963 and 1987 covering traffic usage, surfacing and fatigue. Initially the work was predictive, determining the main variables and establishing the basis of a fatigue assessment methods. Following the discovery of fatigue cracks in service, methods of repair and strengthening were developed. This work has been recorded in internal reports, but much of it has not been generally available until publication of this review. Experimental results are presented and recommendations given for the fatigue classification of welded joints in orthotropic decks.

Book Fatigue Performance Evaluation for an Orthotropic Steel Bridge Deck Based on Field Hotspot Stress Measurements

Download or read book Fatigue Performance Evaluation for an Orthotropic Steel Bridge Deck Based on Field Hotspot Stress Measurements written by Bin Chen and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study has introduced a method for fatigue performance evaluation of steel orthotropic bridge decks based on filed measurements for hotspot stress. The long-term stress of the orthotropic bridge deck of Jinchang Road Canal Bridge in Hangzhou, China, was observed by sensors. The fatigue damage and fatigue reliability of the bridge deck were analyzed and evaluated according to the stress. The results show that: (a) the fatigue life of the bridge deck is larger than the design value, indicating that the design of the orthotropic bridge deck is reasonable; (b) the fatigue loads acting at three hotspots can be described by normal distribution; and (c) for the current traffic volume, the fatigue reliability index of the three hotspots is greater than two in the design period. The fatigue reliability index of the three hotspots decreases significantly with the increase of traffic flow, at which time the fatigue damage becomes considerable.

Book Recommendations for Fatigue Design of Welded Joints and Components

Download or read book Recommendations for Fatigue Design of Welded Joints and Components written by A. F. Hobbacher and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-12-23 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a basis for the design and analysis of welded components that are subjected to fluctuating forces, to avoid failure by fatigue. It is also a valuable resource for those on boards or commissions who are establishing fatigue design codes. For maximum benefit, readers should already have a working knowledge of the basics of fatigue and fracture mechanics. The purpose of designing a structure taking into consideration the limit state for fatigue damage is to ensure that the performance is satisfactory during the design life and that the survival probability is acceptable. The latter is achieved by the use of appropriate partial safety factors. This document has been prepared as the result of an initiative by Commissions XIII and XV of the International Institute of Welding (IIW).

Book Fatigue of Structures and Materials

Download or read book Fatigue of Structures and Materials written by J. Schijve and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-12-16 with total page 627 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fatigue of structures and materials covers a wide scope of different topics. The purpose of the present book is to explain these topics, to indicate how they can be analyzed, and how this can contribute to the designing of fatigue resistant structures and to prevent structural fatigue problems in service. Chapter 1 gives a general survey of the topic with brief comments on the signi?cance of the aspects involved. This serves as a kind of a program for the following chapters. The central issues in this book are predictions of fatigue properties and designing against fatigue. These objectives cannot be realized without a physical and mechanical understanding of all relevant conditions. In Chapter 2 the book starts with basic concepts of what happens in the material of a structure under cyclic loads. It illustrates the large number of variables which can affect fatigue properties and it provides the essential background knowledge for subsequent chapters. Different subjects are presented in the following main parts: • Basic chapters on fatigue properties and predictions (Chapters 2–8) • Load spectra and fatigue under variable-amplitude loading (Chapters 9–11) • Fatigue tests and scatter (Chapters 12 and 13) • Special fatigue conditions (Chapters 14–17) • Fatigue of joints and structures (Chapters 18–20) • Fiber-metal laminates (Chapter 21) Each chapter presents a discussion of a speci?c subject.

Book Fatigue of Reinforced Concrete

Download or read book Fatigue of Reinforced Concrete written by G. P. Mallett and published by Stationery Office Books (TSO). This book was released on 1991 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past 20 years, the Transport and Road Research Laboratory has carried out a co-ordinated programme of fatigue testing, including work on the fatigue performance of reinforced and pre-stressed concrete beams. The research has led to a better understanding of the fatigue behaviour of plain concrete, the various types of reinforcing bars in air and concrete, continuous welded, lapped and coupled bars, and the effects of corrosion. The work of TRRL and many other organizations is reviewed and a summary of current design rules with recommendations for assessing the fatigue life of new structures in service is given.

Book Behavior of Open Grid Steel Bridge Decks Under Service and Fatigue Loads

Download or read book Behavior of Open Grid Steel Bridge Decks Under Service and Fatigue Loads written by Peter C. Fetzer and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Open grid steel bridge decks have been in use for nearly a century. These open grid decks provide an economical and lightweight alternative to traditional reinforced concrete decks. As the transportation infrastructure continues to deteriorate, open grid decks can be used as a cost effective way to rehabilitate structurally deficient bridges. Open grid decks weigh less than conventional reinforced concrete decks and reduce the dead load on a bridge superstructure, thereby increasing the live load capacity. While modern bridge design specifications have evolved to LRFD principles, present design methods for open grid decks are mostly empirical and based on historic practice and performance. Further, fatigue limit states in practice tends to be controlled by cracking in the weak direction, for which no design provisions currently exist. A comprehensive research program was developed to address these issues. The results provide a better understanding of grid deck behavior, and will improve detailing and design provisions.
