This book was released on 1973 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Axial load fatigue and fracture tests were conducted on thick welded plates of 2219-T87 aluminum alloy to determine the tensile strength properties and the flaw growth behavior in electron beam, gas metal arc, and pulse current gas tungsten arc welds for plates 6.35 centimeters (2.5 in.) thick. The tests were conducted in room temperature air and in liquid nitrogen environments. Specimens were tested in both the as-welded and the aged after welding conditions. The experimental crack growth rate were correlated with theoretical crack growth rate predictions for semielliptical surface flaws.

Book Effect of Residual Stresses on Fatigue Crack Growth in Steel Weldments Under Constant and Variable Amplitude Loads

Download or read book Effect of Residual Stresses on Fatigue Crack Growth in Steel Weldments Under Constant and Variable Amplitude Loads written by G. Glinka and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The research deals with the effect of welding residual stresses on fatigue crack growth in medium strength low alloy steel weldments. Three kinds of flat specimens have been used--unwelded specimens, specimens with butt perpendicular welds, and specimens with butt longitudinal welds. Residual stress distributions were others in both kinds of welded specimens. All specimens were tested under constant and variable amplitude load with stress ratios R > 0. Forman's equation and Wheeler's model of crack retardation were used for theoretical analysis of fatigue crack growth under constant and variable amplitude load, respectively. The theoretical results were more realistic when effective stress ratio Reff and effective stress intensity range ?Keff, which compensated for residual stresses, were used. It was found that the tensile residual stresses increased the fatigue crack growth rate and compressive stresses reduced it. The lower the applied load, the higher the residual stress effect. This paper presents both experimental results and an analytical method of fatigue crack growth prediction in steel weldments on the basis of results obtained from parent material properties.

Book 7075 T6 and 2024 T351 Aluminum Alloy Fatigue Crack Growth Rate Data

Download or read book 7075 T6 and 2024 T351 Aluminum Alloy Fatigue Crack Growth Rate Data written by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-06-24 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experimental test procedures for the development of fatigue crack growth rate data has been standardized by the American Society for Testing and Materials. Over the past 30 years several gradual changes have been made to the standard without rigorous assessment of the affect these changes have on the precision or variability of the data generated. Therefore, the ASTM committee on fatigue crack growth has initiated an international round robin test program to assess the precision and variability of test results generated using the standard E647-00. Crack growth rate data presented in this report, in support of the ASTM roundrobin, shows excellent precision and repeatability. Book Fatigue Crack Growth in Friction Stir Welded Ti 5111

Download or read book Fatigue Crack Growth in Friction Stir Welded Ti 5111 written by and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effects of weld microstructure and weld speed on the fatigue crack growth kinetics of friction stir welded Ti-5111 were investigated. The FSW welds in Ti-5111 consist of very fine recrystallized grains, in contrast to coarse basketweave grains in the base plate. Fatigue crack growth rates are significantly lower and fatigue crack growth thresholds are significantly higher through the weld than those in the base plate. As the weld speed increases, the fatigue crack growth rates are progressively higher and fatigue crack growth thresholds lower through the weld. However, after stress-relief annealing, such differences in fatigue crack growth kinetics among different weld speeds no longer exist. Fatigue crack growth rates through post stress-relieved welds are higher than those in the base metal. The observed fatigue crack growth responses are discussed in terms of differences in crack tip microstructure, compressive residual stresses, crack closure, and crack deflection.

Book Corrosion Fatigue Crack Growth Rates of Weldments in Q1N Steel

Download or read book Corrosion Fatigue Crack Growth Rates of Weldments in Q1N Steel written by B. F. Jones and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Low frequency fatigue crack growth rates in air and seawater are reported for manual metal arc, synergic metal inert gas, electron beam and laser beam welds in Q1N steel. The stress corrosion crack growth susceptibility in seawater of the weldments was also studied and both the electron beam and laser beam welds exhibited susceptibility whilst the other welds and parent steel did not. All welds except the 'as-welded' laser beam welds showed silmilar fatigue crack growth rates to the parent plate. When tested in seawater the laser beam weld was found to exhibit exceptionally fast crack growth rates. The factors influencing fatigue crack growth in weldments are discussed. (Author).

Book Computerized Near Threshold Fatigue Crack Growth Rate Testing at Cryogenic Temperatures

Download or read book Computerized Near Threshold Fatigue Crack Growth Rate Testing at Cryogenic Temperatures written by MH. Attaar and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A computerized near-threshold fatigue crack growth rate (FCGR) test method has been applied at cryogenic temperatures. Near-threshold FCGR tests were conducted at room and cryogenic temperatures as low as 4.2 K (-452°F) on JBK-75 (modified A-286) stainless steel (base and autogenous gas-tungsten arc weld metal). Near-threshold crack growth rates in both the base and weld metal tended to decrease with decreasing temperatures from 297 to 4.2 K (75 to -452°F). At each temperature, the JBK-75 base material typically demonstrated a higher threshold stress intensity range than the weld material. Unlike the room temperature results, at 77 and 4.2 K (-320 and -452°F) near-threshold crack propagation rates were insensitive to load ratio (R = Pmin/Pmax). The decreased dependence of near-threshold FCGR data on load ratio at low temperatures appears to be in agreement with a crack closure model.

Book Fatigue Crack Growth in Low Alloy Steel Submerged Arc Weld Metals

Download or read book Fatigue Crack Growth in Low Alloy Steel Submerged Arc Weld Metals written by L. Katz and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fatigue crack growth experiments were conducted on low alloy steel submerged arc weld metals representative of those used in the fabrication of pressure vessels. Variations of wire composition, flux type, and postweld heat treatments were used to produce weld deposits of different microstructures and tensile and toughness properties. Fatigue crack growth experiments were conducted on 25.4-mm (1-in.) thick modified wedge opening loaded (WOL) specimens at room temperature and 288 °C (550°F). A compliance calibration curve was developed at room temperature and adjusted for use with elevated temperature compliance measurements. Results of these experiments indicate: (a) a slight effect of flux type on crack growth rates, (b) incomplete tempering or relief of residual welding stress, or both, has an appreciable effect on crack growth behavior, (c) comparable or lower crack growth rates at 288°C (550°F) compared to room temperature, (d) comparable or lower crack growth rates than those predicted in Section XI of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, and (e) variations in crack growth rates due to wire, flux, and postweld heat treatment were less pronounced than the variations in toughness and tensile properties.

Book Fatigue Crack Growth Threshold Concept and Test Results for Al and Ti Alloys

Download or read book Fatigue Crack Growth Threshold Concept and Test Results for Al and Ti Alloys written by G. Marci and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fact that fatigue crack propagation (FCP) rates approach zero asymptotically as the fracture mechanics loading parameter ?K decreases toward certain limiting values is the reason for the scientific interest in these so-called 'threshold' values. In respect to the practical use of these 'limiting values', the author divides them into two groups, namely in 'non-propagation conditions' ?Kth and in a material property 'FCP-threshold' ?KT. It is shown that ?KT must be an integral part in the functional correlation between FCP-rates and the cyclic loading conditions expressed in ?Keff. The experimental determination of ?Kth on six Al-alloys and four Ti-compressor disk alloys show that ?KT exists for all the alloys investigated. The effect of temperature on ?KT was investigated on one Ti 6Al 4V- and one Ti 8Al 1V 1Mo disk material at room temperature (RT) and 260°C and at RT, 260°C and 360°C, respectively. No temperature effect on ?KT was found for the temperature range investigated.
