Book Prediction of Crack Growth Under Creep Fatigue Loading Conditions

Download or read book Prediction of Crack Growth Under Creep Fatigue Loading Conditions written by KM. Nikbin and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Crack growth data are presented on a brittle and a ductile low alloy steel and a nickel base superalloy which have been subjected to combined static and cyclic loading at elevated temperatures. The cyclic tests have been conducted between fixed load and fixed displacement ranges. Distinct regions of fatigue and creep dominated cracking have been identified. It is shown that crack growth eventually ceases because of load relaxation in the constant displacement amplitude tests. Fracture of a component made of the ductile steel is unlikely to occur under this type of low-cycle fatigue loading, but significant cracking is possible with the brittle steel. Where cyclic crack growth is creep controlled, it is shown that crack propagation rates can be predicted from static creep data using the creep fracture mechanics parameter C*.

Book Gaseous Environment Fatigue Crack Propagation Behavior of a Low Alloy Steel

Download or read book Gaseous Environment Fatigue Crack Propagation Behavior of a Low Alloy Steel written by JK. Donald and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fatigue crack growth behavior of 4340 steel was investigated in gaseous environments: laboratory air, hydrogen, and helium. No significant effect of specimen orientation on the rates of fatigue crack propagation was observed. In each environment, increasing load ratio decreased the threshold stress-intensity range (?Kth). The effect of load ratio on ?Kth in the air environment was, however, much more significant than that in wet hydrogen and dry environments (dry hydrogen and dry helium). At low load ratios (? 0.5), the values of ?Kth in the air environment were larger than those in dry environments. The ?Kth values in wet hydrogen were in between those in air and dry environments. At a high load ratio of 0.8, ?Kth was, however, insensitive to test environment.

Book The Effect of Potential Upon the High temperature Fatigue Crack Growth Response of Low alloy Steels Part 1

Download or read book The Effect of Potential Upon the High temperature Fatigue Crack Growth Response of Low alloy Steels Part 1 written by and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Corrosion-fatigue crack propagation experiments were conducted on several low-alloy steels in elevated temperature aqueous environments, and experimental parameters included temperature, sulfur content of the steel, applied potential level, and dissolved hydrogen (and in one case, dissolved oxygen) concentration in the water. Specimen potentials were controlled potentiostatically, and the observation (or non-observation) of accelerated fatigue crack growth rates was a complex function of the above parameters. Electrochemical results and the postulated explanation for the complex behavior are given in Part II.

Book Low Cycle Fatigue Behavior and Crack Propagation in Some Steels

Download or read book Low Cycle Fatigue Behavior and Crack Propagation in Some Steels written by Saurindranath Majumdar and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a previous report, a fatigue crack propagation model was analyzed by considering fatigue crack propagation as a sequence of fatigue crack initiation events. This permitted correlation to be made between the fatigue crack growth resistance and low cycle fatigue properties of metals. Four steels were tested for low cycle fatigue behavior at the University of Illinois. Good correlation was obtained between the theoretically predicted crack propagation rate based on the measured low cycle fatigue properties of the four metals and experimentally observed crack propagation rates that were reported in the literature. Further, good estimates of crack propagation rates can be obtained on the basis of static tensile properties of the metals alone where cyclic properties are not available. (Author).
