Book Father Dolling A Memoir Edited with an Introduction by Matthew Fisher

Download or read book Father Dolling A Memoir Edited with an Introduction by Matthew Fisher written by Joseph Clayton and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2019-03-12 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Joseph Clayton (1868-1943) wrote this short memoir of his dear friend of fourteen years shortly after Father Dolling's death. Dolling's account of the work at Portsmouth was published. Whilst Ten Years tells the story of the Irish High Church slum-priest's incredible devotion to the poor people of Landport, this memoir encourages the reader to understand all Dolling's work and also his views on politics; the theatre and literature; the Boer War, including soldiers pay; his ?methods? with drunk Vicars; and even the issues of water supply to East London. Therefore, this short Memoir is more than a memorial to the deceased Father Dolling, it provides insights into many aspects of late Victorian city life and attitudes to a wide range of topics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The emergence of a vibrant imperial culture in British society from the 1890s both fascinated and appalled contemporaries. It has also consistently provoked controversy among historians. This book offers a ground-breaking perspective on how imperial culture was disseminated. It identifies the important synergies that grew between a new civic culture and the wider imperial project. Beaven shows that the ebb and flow of imperial enthusiasm was shaped through a fusion of local patriotism and a broader imperial identity. Imperial culture was neither generic nor unimportant but was instead multi-layered and recast to capture the concerns of a locality. The book draws on a rich seam of primary sources from three representative English cities. These case studies are considered against an extensive analysis of seminal and current historiography. This renders the book invaluable to those interested in the fields of imperialism, social and cultural history, popular culture, historical geography and urban history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Father Dolling When I was asked by his relatives to compile the memoir of my dear friend Robert Radclyffe Dolling, I hesitated at first to promise to do so, from a fear lest the pressure of various duties in a large parish should render the fulfilment of the promise impossible, or very long delayed. However, on consideration, I felt that it would be wrong to allow anything to hinder the attempt to insure a permanent memorial of one the story of whose life, already the cherished possession of many, ought to be still more widely known throughout the nation and the Church. Any author's profits accruing from the sale of this book will be devoted to the purposes of the Dolling Memorial Fund, of which some account will be found in Appendix II. A friendship with Robert Dolling on my part, extending for over twenty years before his death, and the fact that for seven years of that time I was in daily and most intimate contact with him, as one of his assistant clergy at S. Agatha's, Landport, have enabled me to write with a first-hand knowledge of many of the events recorded in the following pages, and of much of the inner mind of Father Dolling himself, and of his sentiments and line of action on various important subjects. I have tried to present to the reader a picture of him as he actually was. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The House of My Friends

Download or read book The House of My Friends written by Eric James and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2005-01-30 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The House of my Friends is the nearest Eric James will get to an autobiography. He left school -in Dagenham, Essex- at fourteen, when the Second World War broke out, and went to work for seven years at a riverside wharf on the Thames where the Globe Theatre now stands. After ordination, he became chaplain of Trinity College, Cambridge, and thereby became associated with some of the most famous and influential clerics of his generation; Mervyn Stockwood, John Robinson (author of the bestseller Honest to God), Robert Runcie and Trevor Huddleston. James was made chaplain to H.M. the Queen in 1984 and was preacher to Gray's Inn from 1978-97, as well as Director of Christian Action from 1979-90 and one of the people who inspired faith in the City. James is now fellow of King's College London where he began his studies, at night school, in 1945. The roll call of people that Eric James writes about is astounding, always with wit and perception. He has broadcast regularly to millions of listeners on the BBC's Thought for the Day programme, and his strong social conscience breathes through the pages of this book. Eric James is the author of a dozen other books including the highly praised biography of Bishop John A.T. Robinson. His latest book is the self-portrait of a wise and much loved pastor.
