Book excerpt: The Hundred Billion Dollar Man The hundred billion dollar man. No, he's not a new superhero with bionic limbs who can run through walls and is more powerful than a locomotive. The hundred billion dollar man is the personification of the annual cost of absentee fathers to American society. That was the conclusion of a 2008 report written by Christopher Einolf and the late Steven Nock for the National Fatherhood Initiative. The greatest plague to ever hit this country: it is the root cause for the greatest psychological, physical, emotional, mental, and social devastation in the history of the world. The disease is Father Deficiency. It goes beyond just being fatherless but also includes fathers who were present yet absent. Considered by most Americans the number-one social ill in the country, the devastation can be seen in the following statistics about fatherless homes compiled by the Department of Justice. 63 percent of youth suicides are from fatherless homes. 90 percent of all homeless and runaway youths are from fatherless homes. 85 percent of children who exhibit behavioral disorders are from fatherless homes. 71 percent of high school dropouts are from fatherless homes. 70 percent of youths in state institutions are from fatherless homes. 75 percent of adolescent patients in substance abuse centers are from fatherless homes. 85 percent of rapists motivated by displaced anger are from fatherless homes. 71 percent of teenage pregnancies are to children of single parents. U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services Nearly 75 percent of American children living in single-parent families will experience poverty before they turn eleven. National Fatherhood Initiative A must read for every person who was reared without a father or didn't receive everything he or she needed from a father, this book is for every leader, teacher, and especially those who deal with youth.

The book capitalizes on real life experience through the depiction of three well-examined personal stories. It describes how the near extinction of generational and tribal mentorship has contributed to a warped picture of masculinity. Men ignore the powerful factors that influence them and this lack of insight prevents them from effectively moving forward. Father Deficit holds men accountable for understanding their identity and purpose, so theyre equipped to develop into the powerful, purposeful and valuable individuals they were created to be.

Book Ellis Handbook of Mental Deficiency Psychological Theory and Research

Download or read book Ellis Handbook of Mental Deficiency Psychological Theory and Research written by William E. MacLean Jr. and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 493 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 16 years since the publication of the second edition of this volume, psychological theory and research in mental retardation has continued to expand and extend scientific, theoretical, and clinical understanding of this most complex and challenging human condition. Explicit effort has been made to translate theory and research into useful and efficacious assessment, intervention, prevention, and policy actions. This third edition provides an opportunity to critique major conceptual developments and empirical research in an effort to stimulate further behavioral research of practical, social importance. The Handbook presents work by prominent contributors to a major scientific endeavor that has grown dramatically during the last three decades. The challenge for each author was to identify important theoretical and empirical issues, provide a critical, selective review of exemplary research, and discuss the questions that remain unanswered in each area. In short, the goal for this third edition was to consolidate the knowledge gained during the past 30 years and to present a blueprint for future research in mental retardation, the broader field of learning disabilities, and other developmental disorders such as autism. Providing totally different coverage and direction from the previous edition, this text fills a crucial instructional need in graduate courses related to the psychology of mental retardation. With its emphasis on psychological research and theory, it offers an important alternative to many available texts that primarily emphasize the application of research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Helping Parents Help Their Kids is a guide both for clinicians who help families and for parents who have children with behavior problems. The author provides three ways to address clinical issues in designing and implementing child behavior management plans: a general behavioral consultation model, a specific behavioral model, and an empirically-tested advice package for problems that can occur in different family contexts. Each chapter provides early research on a specific strategy and several forms to use in the clinical environment.Parents will find this book helpful because the information is presented in a user-friendly format. The author explains how parents can learn specific strategies to deal with six common problems. These problems include: teaching both children and adolescents to comply with the rules of the house, dealing with disruptive behavior, and addressing problems in school.Helping Parents Help Their Kids offers both clinicians and parents effective procedures without the technical jargon many typical behavioral texts use. Instead, the author explains these methods in common-sense terms that will be a welcome change for all who want to find solutions for their child's behavioral problems.
