Download or read book Bots and Beasts written by Paul Thagard and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2021-10-19 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An expert on mind considers how animals and smart machines measure up to human intelligence. Octopuses can open jars to get food, and chimpanzees can plan for the future. An IBM computer named Watson won on Jeopardy! and Alexa knows our favorite songs. But do animals and smart machines really have intelligence comparable to that of humans? In Bots and Beasts, Paul Thagard looks at how computers ("bots") and animals measure up to the minds of people, offering the first systematic comparison of intelligence across machines, animals, and humans. Thagard explains that human intelligence is more than IQ and encompasses such features as problem solving, decision making, and creativity. He uses a checklist of twenty characteristics of human intelligence to evaluate the smartest machines--including Watson, AlphaZero, virtual assistants, and self-driving cars--and the most intelligent animals--including octopuses, dogs, dolphins, bees, and chimpanzees. Neither a romantic enthusiast for nonhuman intelligence nor a skeptical killjoy, Thagard offers a clear assessment. He discusses hotly debated issues about animal intelligence concerning bacterial consciousness, fish pain, and dog jealousy. He evaluates the plausibility of achieving human-level artificial intelligence and considers ethical and policy issues. A full appreciation of human minds reveals that current bots and beasts fall far short of human capabilities.

However, in an even-handed treatment, the project's successes in bringing music to millions of listeners is also highlighted. Annotation copyright by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this gritty and suspenseful family drama from celebrated storyteller Keith Lee Johnson, three brothers find their professional and romantic lives veering out of control and heading toward a shattering conclusion. Brothers Jericho, Sterling, and William Wise may be bonded by blood, but life has dealt them very different hands. Jericho is a drug and munitions dealer, the leader of an elite group of former military personnel. Sterling is an attorney who finds himself fired from his prestigious San Francisco law firm on the same day he's expecting a verdict on a nationally televised case that was supposed to make his career. And William, a widowed psychologist and the youngest Wise brother, has spent the past five years alone but is finally imagining what it might be like to love again. Only trouble is, Terry Moretti, the woman he's dating, is white, and she can't seem to understand the societal and familial taboos that keep William from getting too closely involved. Jericho has a whole other dilemma to deal with—one that could see him ending up in jail for a very long time. Meanwhile, Sterling's luck seems to turn around when he meets a mysterious woman who offers him the world, but in return, he would need to comply with her racial prejudices—is he willing to pay her price? Keith Lee Johnson's twisting, riveting plot and crackling dialogue will captivate the reader from page one, and the extraordinary Wise Brothers’ choices will lead them inexorably toward a stunning and unforgettable climax.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Terrifying Tales of Classic Horror Beginning with a last-man-on-Earth tale that ends with a surprising twist and finishing with a seductive ghost story, If I Should Wake Before I Die collects the complete horror short fiction of author Eric B. Olsen into one volume. Written between 1986 and 1992, these stories reflect the inspiration of major horror writers of the time, like Stephen King and Peter Straub, as well as the EC horror comics of the 1950s. Each of the primary stories is prefaced by a second-person short-short story that sets the scene for the spine tingling tales that follow. While the settings and characters begin in the normal world of everyday life, before long that world transforms into something terrifyingly abnormal. From post-apocalyptic science fiction to karmic retribution, the supernatural manipulation of existence to self-induced psychosis, Olsens vision is a unique one that combines realism with an edge of humor to create a collection that is as thought provoking as it is frightening. In addition to the fifteen stories from the original collection, this edition contains two additional stories as well as his two horror novellas Blood Feast and Bride of Blood Feast. The horror stories of Eric B. Olsen pull back the curtain of ordinary life and allow the reader to catch a glimpse of a frighteningly alternate reality.

Download or read book The Writings of a Demi God written by Rajindra Narinesingh and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2007-07 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Christian Doctrine, it is conveyed that we are all God's children who have been created in His image. Could that mean that we are all mini-Gods? Besides nature everything on the planet was created by man. I observe that as human beings, we have the ability to have an idea and bring the idea to fruition. In other words, before there was a wheel, someone or some group of human beings had to think about it. And now we live in a time of astronauts actually being able to fly to the moon. God, the creator of the universe has given us the ability to create, hence the fact that we are all Demi GODS! It is important to be specific about the life we create. This book addresses seven spiritual principles that I have observed in my life. I pray that these principles will be of guidance to you as you create the life you want.
