Book excerpt: As this volume demonstrates, immunobiology is a young science which is undergoing explosive growth. Judged by results, it is already an elaborate discipline which cuts across every other area in biomedical research and even has its own vocabolary (e.g., the "veto" effect). Rather than inculcate the habit of superficial learning by having the student go through a maze of details, we have sought to gather together sixteen essays that range from T-cells to psyhoneuroimmunology. This is keeping with the growing understanding that the student is expected to read and think far more for herself/himself.Next to nothing is known about innate immunity. However, recent evidence suggests that collectins might bridge the gap between innate immunity and specific clonal immune responses. Collectins are soluble effector proteins that include serum mannose-binding protein, and lung surfactants A and D. They are considered to be ante-antibodies.

Book Biological Response Mediators and Modulators

Download or read book Biological Response Mediators and Modulators written by J. Thomas August and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biological Response Mediators and Modulators explains that the behavior of a cell depends upon the absorption of the ligand, the quantity of functional receptors existing for ligand recognition and binding, and the transduction of the signal through successive intercellular events. The book presents such model systems as the low-density lipoprotein (LDL) receptor, the epidermal growth factor receptor, and the insulin receptor. The LDL receptor is a model for a class of surface receptors that facilitate the cellular application of macromolecules through the process of receptor-mediated endocytosis. The book discusses the general characteristics of receptor-mediated endocytosis. Another topic of interest is the property of growth-related cell surface receptors. The section that follows describes the function of these receptors as tyrosine-specific protein kinases, which is related to the protein yields of some viral oncogenes. The amount of receptors in a cell depends upon the rates of synthesis and inactivation. The book will provide valuable insights for scientists, cytologists, students, and researchers in the field of chemistry.

Where police are not routinely armed, there is still a need for specialist armed police: how do these units operate, and are they effective? This ground-breaking edited book explores the nexus between policing and firearms with a genuinely international focus. Contributors from Ireland, Germany, the United Kingdom, Brazil, Mexico, the United States, Venezuela, New Zealand, Australia, and Canada explore the issues from a range of perspectives, including human rights, militarization, police legitimacy, and the risks police firearms pose to the community and to police themselves. This thought-provoking collection is an indispensable resource for law enforcement policymakers and students of policing and criminal justice.

  • ISBN : 9780226890418

Download or read book Perturbing the Organism written by Herbert Weiner and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1992-06 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Overlooked in the early accounts was that all organisms face many additional types of natural challenges and obstacles in their efforts to survive and reproduce: for example, they must fight or escape predators, replenish diminished food supplies, and anticipate, seasonal changes of climate. Weiner's survey of the literature shows that much progress has been made in understanding the effects of exposing animals to these kinds of naturally occurring stressful experiences and their varied outcomes. Under such conditions there appear patterns of integrated behavioral and physiological responses that are exquisitely attuned to the experience. He carefully assesses the research on the ways in which neural circuits and peptidergic mechanisms in the brain generate and integrate these patterns. In addition, he presents new concepts about the perturbation of subsystems, including biological clocks, which may, or may not, lead to disease or ill-health.
