Book excerpt: Thornton also sheds light on areas where popular culture and politics were uneasily interlinked: the powerful political influence of those outside elite groups; the variations in political culture across the country; and the considerable continuing power of mystical, supernatural, and 'non-rational' ideas in British social and political life into the nineteenth century."--Jacket.

Download or read book The Medieval Stained Glass of Wells Cathedral written by Tim Ayers and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2004 with total page 536 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handsome two-part set is the first fully illustrated study of one of the most substantial collections of medieval stained glass in England. In particular, the glass from the east end of Wells Cathedral (rebuilt by a thriving clerical community in 1320-40) includes the five brilliantly colored windows of the choir clerestory, with its seven-light Jesse east window, and glass from the famous polygonal Lady Chapel. Besides describing and illustrating each panel, the volume has introductions to each part of the cathedral complex. What is known of the original glazing and its history is reconstructed, and many new discoveries are revealed. An introduction places the findings within the wider context of recent international stained glass studies and late medieval art history.

Download or read book The Medieval Chantry in England written by Julian M. Luxford and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-11-01 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chantries were religious institutions endowed with land, goods and money. At their heart was the performance of a daily mass for the spiritual benefit of their founders, and the souls of all faithful dead. To Church reformers, they exemplified some of medieval Catholicism’s most egregious errors; but to the orthodox they offered opportunities to influence what occurred in an unknowable afterlife. The eleven essays presented here lead the reader through the earliest manifestations of the chantry, the origins and development of ‘stone-cage’ chapels, royal patronage of commemorative art and architecture, the chantry in the late medieval parish, the provision of music and textiles, and a series of specific chantries created for William of Wykeham, Edmund Audley, Thomas Spring and Abbot Islip, to the eventual history and the cultural consequences of their suppression in the mid-16th century.
Download or read book Devon s Torre Abbey written by Dr Michael Rhodes and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2015-05-04 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Torre Abbey is an archaeological site of national importance. Founded in 1196, it became the wealthiest English monastery of the order of Premonstratensian canons. The extent of its survival makes Torre Abbey the best preserved medieval abbey in Devon and Cornwall. After King Henry VIII closed the monastery in 1539, two of its former ranges were adapted for use as a private house. From 1662, this house became the home of the Roman Catholic Cary family, who lived there for nearly 300 years. The story of Torre Abbey mirrors in a remarkable way the story of English Catholics during the years of the penal laws. The local council acquired Torre Abbey in 1930, and adapted it for use as an art gallery and Mayor's Parlour. Today, the abbey provides an ideal setting for Torbay's collection of paintings and antiques, most of which have been donated by local people. It has recently been restored and modernised. This book is the first complete history of Torre Abbey. It is based on the latest historical and architectural research, and is richly illustrated throughout.
