Book Fast Neutron Effects on Tensile and Hardness Properties of Type 347 Stainless Steel

Download or read book Fast Neutron Effects on Tensile and Hardness Properties of Type 347 Stainless Steel written by W. F. Murphy and published by . This book was released on 1957 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Non-standard, multiple-notch tension specimens made from both annealed and 70 per cent cold-drawn type 347 stainless steel were irradiated for various times in the Experimental Breeder Reactor at the National Reactor Testing Station in Idaho. The tests were originally started for the purpose of monitoring the effects of high-energy neutrons on reactor structural components made from type 347 steel. During irradiation the specimens were in contact with a liquid alloy of sodium and potassium at temperatures between 228 and 316 C. Rockwell A hardnesses and ultimate tensile strengths were determined and compared with similar data from unirradiated specimens.

Book Effect of Neutron Irradiation on Mechanical Properties of AISI Type 347 Stainless Steel

Download or read book Effect of Neutron Irradiation on Mechanical Properties of AISI Type 347 Stainless Steel written by M. Kangilaski and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Changes in mechanical properties induced by irradiation of AISI Type 347 stainless steel at about 60 C were determined after integrated fast-flux (>1 Mev) exposures of 1.6 x 1022 and 2.1 x 1022 n/cm2. Tension tests were performed at room temperature, 316, and 750 C. The results indicated that the ultimate tensile strength and yield strength were greater after irradiation, with the yield strength showing the greater increase. After an exposure of 2.1 x 1022 n/cm2, the ratio of yield strength to ultimate strength was approximately 1. The decreases in ductility as measured by total and uniform elongation at 20 C were about the same magnitude for both levels of irradiation. The ductility at 316 C continued to decrease as a function of increasing neutron exposure. Radiation-induced property changes differed only slightly from those observed after irradiation to 5.5 x 1021 n/cm2 with the exception of the uniform and the total elongation at 316 C, suggesting that saturation of displacement damage occurred prior to this exposure. The fracture mode for both unirradiated and irradiated specimens was transgranular. Annealing of irradiated specimens for 1 hr at 982 C restored the preirradiation mechanical properties at 316 C. A severe reduction in ductility was noted for specimens tested at 750 C after irradiation to 2.1 x 1022 n/cm2, showing only about 0.5 per cent as uniform and total elongation. The fracture mode was intergranular. Annealing for 1 hr at 982 and 1350 C did not change the as-irradiated ductility.

Book Effects of Large Neutron Doses and Elevated Temperature on Type 347 Stainless

Download or read book Effects of Large Neutron Doses and Elevated Temperature on Type 347 Stainless written by William E. Murr and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tests of subsize tensile and impact specimens of Type 547 stainless steel irradiated in three capsules to fastneutron exposures of up to 1.1 x 10/sup 22/ nvt were conducted. Ductile fractures at impact energies of 65 ft-lb, representing a 35% decrease in impact strength, were noted at room temperature. Impact energies of approximates 20 ft-lb and a fracture with both brittle and ductile characteristics were observed at -300 deg F. Irradiation-induced property changes included increases in yield strength from 35,000 to 105,000 psi and in ultimate strength from 90,000 to 112,000 psi and a decrease in total elongation from 63 to 31% at room temperature. A 600 deg F anneal produced no measurable recovery of preirradiation properties for periods up to 144 hr, but a large degree of recovery was obtained by annealing 1 hr at 1800 deg F. In material irradiated at 750 deg F, increases in yield strength from 55,000 to 149,000 psi and in ultimate strength from 92,000 to 149,000 psi, decreases in elongation from 55 to 10%, and reductions in area from 70 to 60% were observed. Book Radiation Induced Property Changes in AISI Type 347 Stainless Steel

Download or read book Radiation Induced Property Changes in AISI Type 347 Stainless Steel written by W. E. Murr and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 19 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The changes in the mechanical properties of AISI type 347 stainless steel produced by irradiation at ~120 F to 5.7 x 1021 and 1.2 x 1022 neutrons per sq cm have been determined by tension, impact, and hardness tests. The ultimate strength was increased from 90,000 to 114,000 psi, yield strength was increased from 38,000 to 104,000 psi, and elongation was reduced from 64 to 30 per cent at 75 F. Somewhat smaller changes were obtained at 600 F test temperature. A 1-hr anneal at 1800 F removed all effects of irradiation produced by 1.2 x 1022 neutrons per sq cm and reduced tensile properties at 75 F to essentially the same values as the unirradiated 347 stainless steel. Increased hardness of 347 steel resulting from irradiation was not removed by annealing at 600 F. The energy absorbed at fracture on irradiated Charpy V-notch specimens was 65 ft-lb at 75 F and 20 ft-lb at - 300 F. Sufficient ductility in combination with the increased yield strength would appear to be more than adequate to warrant the service of this material in reactor environments of approximately 120 F to neutron exposures of 1.2 x 1022 neutrons per sq cm.

Book The Effect of Nuclear Radiation on Structural Metals

Download or read book The Effect of Nuclear Radiation on Structural Metals written by Frederic R. Shober and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effect of fast-neutron (>1 Mev) irradiation on the mechanical properties of structural metals and alloys was studied. Although the yield strengths and ultimate tensile strengths are increased su stantially for most materials, the ductility suffers severe decreases. This report presents these changes in properties of several structural metals for a number of neutron exposures within the 1.0 x 10 to the 18th power to 5.0 x 10 to the 21st power n/sq cm range. Data summarizing these effects on several classes of materials such as carbon steels, low-alloy steels, stainless steels, Zr-base alloys, ni-base alloys, Al-base alloys, and Ta are given. Additional data which show the influence f irradiation temperatures and of post-irradiation annealing on the radiation-induced property changes are also given and discussed. Increases as great as 175% in yield strength, 100% in ultimate strength, and decreases of 80% in total elongation are reported for fast-neutron exposures as great as 5 10 to the 21st power n/sq cm. This book was released on 1976 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fast neutron irradiation effects on the tensile properties of 20 percent cold-worked Type 316 stainless steel are presented to fluences of 3.6 x 1022 neutrons (n)/cm2, E > 0.1 MeV (3.6 x 1026 n/m2, E > 16 fJ), at irradiation temperatures of 700 to 1125°F (644 to 880 K). The tests were performed over the range of room temperature to 1600°F (1144 K) employing strain rates of 1.82 x 10-3 to 1.82/min (3 x 10-5 to 3 x 10-2/s).
