Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fast Day Sermons, or the Pulpit on the State of the Country The following Discourses are collected in a volume in the belief that they will have a historical interest. These are Revolutionary times. The country is profoundly agitated, not on a question Of party, but Of National existence. On the very brink of dissolution, we are led to pause and review the causes that have brought us to this. While the people attend eagerly to the appeals Of their leaders, thoughtful men will listen silently for the calm voices of the Pulpit, from which they will expect a clearer statement Of the principles which underlie all this popular turbulence. This book was released on 2017-12-27 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Sermon, Preached on the National Fast Day, at Church Green, Boston This planting of a nation, but especially of such a nation, is something sublime and solemn to contemplate. Government of some kind, - without which social order and private security cannot exist, - is certainly the ordi nance of God. And, therefore, all mankind have agreed to brand treason as a crime against heaven and earth, and they have stricken it with pains and penalties, with attainders and forfeitures, beyond any other crime against society. But if ever the footsteps of a divine providence have been seen in the growth of any nation, it appears to me that it is in this, our American nationality. If any government ever were, I believe that this is an ordinance of God. And if any treason were ever more inexcusable and monstrous than any other yet seen on earth, I believe it is this which we witness to-day. Book Union National Fast Day Sermon

Download or read book Union National Fast Day Sermon written by T. P. Bucher and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-18 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Union National Fast Day Sermon: Delivered in the United Presbyterian Church, Gettysburg, P. A., Friday, January 4, A. D. 1861 This is a very solemn occasion which brings us of various creeds and parties together in this holy temple. God the Father Almighty is to be worshipped through Jesus Christ his Son our Lord, in beseem ing devotions, in View of the troubled and threaten ing aspect of our national affairs. An inward consciousness guided by the teachings of Holy Writ has brought us, as a people, to make humble recognition of the Divine Sovereignty, that the Lord, who is God, visits individuals and nations with His just judgments for their sins; that to those who fear His name, He is both merciful and good. And from thousands of christian altars, when Sab bath worship fills the Sanctuary, prayers have been ascending to God, and daily prayers from millions of pious hearts, in behalf of our Country in this hour of her extremity. But as a nation we are dismayed; as a nation then we must acknowledge our sins, and by fasting and prayer sue for pardon, and that direction which will bring deliverance from present dangers. Such hum blings under the mighty hand of God and such plead ings are suggested not only by the biblical page, but also by incidents in our own past history. During the revolutionary struggle when hope seem ed to fail, and unnerving destitution stared the soldi ery, the Revolutionary Congress appointed a season to be observed in fasting and prayer. Book A Sermon Preached on Fast Day

Download or read book A Sermon Preached on Fast Day written by Thomas Doggett and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Sermon Preached on Fast Day: September 26, 1861 Judges XIX.30, - "And it was so, that all that saw it said, there was no such deed done nor seen from the day that the children of Israel came up out of the land of Egypt unto this day; Consider of it, take advice, and speak your minds." We are convened to-day by public authority. The President of the United States, and the Governor of our own Commonwealth, have united in the recommendation and request, that we should observe this day as a day of Prayer. They have but given voice to the general sentiment and desire of our people, who as a nation, feel in an unusual degree, the need and blessedness of the Divine favor. If we feel called upon to bow in supplication and penitence in time of private grief, much more shall we at time of wide spread and national sorrow. National calamity is a call to national humiliation. It needs no especial insight to see that as a people we are in the furnace of affliction; that as a people we are passing through the valley of the shadow of death. Though want and famine, desolation and pestilence, are not in our homes and in our streets, yet the very principles, that are the soul and life blood of our national being; that give value to houses, and lands, and life, are placed in jeopardy, and menaced with destruction. This is the meaning of the war now raging. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2017-02-20 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fast-Day Sermon, Preached in the Good Hope Church, Lowndes County, Alabama, Thursday, June 13th, 1861 But further still are our people guilty. Walk down the streets of our large cities and even of our villages, and upon the lips of avery large proportion of those you meet, the sacred name of God trembles irreverently; and even little children, following the example of those who should teach them reverence, use it only to add emphasis to their assertions! Sabbath after sabbath is prostituted to game making and sport and merriment at the will of a crowd, instead of being employed by them as a day of sacred rest and worship. The Sabbatic rest of the fields is broken by the shrill whistle of the locomotive, while the rivers are agitated by the paddles of the steamboat. There are other sins which might be brought to view as cause for repentance, and which clamor loudly for reform. O people of the South wound no more your mother, upon whose bosom you have securely nestled; but bear her, now weeping and bleeding, upon your arms to the throne, and while you weep with her and for her, confess her sins and your sins there, with a spirit of humble penitence, and God will ac knowledge and accept the sacrifice, and answer with speedy and abundant blessing. If my people upon whom my name is called, shall humble themselves and pray and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and will heal the land. 2 Chron. VII. 14. Behold I will bring it health and cure - and will reveal unto them the abundance of peace and truth. Jer. XXXIII. 6. But there are peculiar blessings of temporal character hav ing special and immediate reference to the present condition of the land which we should make the subject of importunate prayer. The distracted country calls loudly for peace. She wants not war, and at the sight of blood, shudders and turns pale not from fear, but sorrow. She deprecates the scene of war and carnage and blood. She weeps even while she strikes. She weeps for departed peace - not because she is a coward, but a here! Not because she dare not maintain the right, but because she does not want the right to bleed. She has made overture upon over ture, and yet her plea is not regarded. Her valiant ones cry without - the ambassadors of peace weep bitterly. Her foe, hath broken the covenant - he hath despised the cities - he regardeth no man. Book excerpt: This thesis provides a contextual description and analysis of four southern fast day sermons delivered in the winter of 1860-61 by the following Presbyterian ministers: James Henley Thornwell (South Carolina), Benjamin Morgan Palmer (Louisiana), Robert Lewis Dabney (Virginia), and Robert Jefferson Breckinridge (Kentucky). The introduction provides a short history of the practice of communal fasting, a brief review of sermon scholarship, and a description of the book, Fast Day Sermons (1861), in which these four sermons were published. Each chapter centers on a different sermon, providing information on the venue in which the sermon was delivered, a biographical sketch of the specific minister, a description of the socio-political context and events that led to a fast day proclamation, an analysis of the sermon text, and an account of the media coverage the sermon received. The conclusion draws attention to the need for further scholarly investigation of this particular sermon genre.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Plea for Peace: A Sermon, Preached in the Church of the Holy Innocents, Baltimore, September 26, 1861, the Day of National Fasting, Humiliation and Prayer That history has its counterpart in our experience, in this day of pseudo-patriots, and petrified patriotism, and civil war, which is yelling like an infuriated devil let loose from the infernal regions. Do we not find the public treasury is a sort of Theoric fund, in which every member of the com monwealth has a right to share, when the occasion offers? Have we not felt that knavery, getting from the people power, is an engine against the State? Ave we not seen venal wretches plunder ruins which themselves have made? Do we not see patriots ostracised, and truth contraband? Have we not the form of right to excite wrong? Is there not at this moment, a thick darkness between us and peace? Why? Because the unrun ed waters of peace would leave many floating and neglected on the surface. The tempest of war lifts them from their place. Pope, you remember, once said, what must be the priest, where the monkey is a God? May we not ask, what must be the people, whose leaders are venal? Would to heaven we could weed the country of demagogues, who merit more than the punish ment of a Tantalus.
