  • Pages : 233 pages

Download or read book Art and Design written by Peter Stupples and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2018-01-23 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a selection of essays covering aspects of the history, and contemporary understanding of the fields of art and design and their inter-percolation. Making things has always involved skill and thought. Thought is given to their creation so they are fit for purpose. Where the purpose is aesthetic or intellectual pleasure, the resulting object is often called art. There is, however, often a hierarchy placing “art” somewhere apart from “design.” But isn’t some art designed? These essays investigate aspects of this dichotomy – from both sides of the supposed divide to discuss the ground between.

Book Exploring Atmospheres Ethnographically

Download or read book Exploring Atmospheres Ethnographically written by Sara Asu Schroer and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-12-06 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The notion of atmosphere has always been part of academic discourse, but often refers to something vague and diffuse - a phenomenon connected with our affective engagement with the world that is difficult to grasp. This volume develops and refines the concept of atmosphere, seeking to render it productive for anthropological and social scientific research by bringing together a range of original ethnographic studies in combination with investigation of the use of the term in language. The chapters examine dimensions of atmosphere through topics of interdisciplinary concern, such as learning and the acquisition of skills, the experience of place, affect and mood, multi-species relations and the perception of weather and environment - whether in natural landscapes, medical and educational settings, homes or creative contexts - Exploring Atmospheres Ethnographically analyses the relational and transformational processes through which people perceive, experience and live in a moving atmospheric world. As such, it will appeal to scholars of anthropology, sociology, geography and cultural studies with interests in space and place, sensory ethnography and affect.

Book Fashion and the City

Download or read book Fashion and the City written by Vincent Pandolfi and published by Eburon Uitgeverij B.V.. This book was released on 2015-03-16 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field of culture is increasingly seen as a strategic asset in/for a balanced development of cities. Recent research, however, seems to point to a limited recognition of this potential in local policy-making, culture becoming increasingly linked to aims of economic repositioning. But which aims are exactly involved here? Are we indeed facing a new dominant (and unilateral) approach to culture in Western European cities, leaving the full development potential of the field unexplored? And why might this be the case? Through case studies of fashion in Antwerp, Milan and Amsterdam, the changing strategising of culture in local development (since the 1980s), is linked to the search for new governing arrangements between public and private (cultural) actors within the cities. On the basis of this analysis, a plea is made for a new, and more integrated approach to culture in Western European cities, pointing to the significant challenge of experimenting with new, and more inclusive forms of public-private policy-making in support of this agenda.

Book Colors in Fashion

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jonathan Faiers
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing
  • Release : 2016-11-17
  • ISBN : 1474273696
  • Pages : 281 pages

Download or read book Colors in Fashion written by Jonathan Faiers and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2016-11-17 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Color speaks a powerful cultural language, conveying political, sexual, and economic messages that, throughout history, have revealed how we relate to ourselves and our world. This ground-breaking compilation is the first to investigate how color in fashionable and ceremonial dress has played a significant social role, indicating acceptance and exclusion, convention and subversion. From the use of white in pioneering feminism to the penchant for black in post-war France, and from mystical scarlet broadcloth to the horrors of arsenic-laden green fashion, this publication demonstrates that color in dress is as mutable, nuanced, and varied as color itself. Divided into four thematic parts – solidarity, power, innovation, and desire – each section highlights the often violent, emotional histories of color in dress across geographical, temporal and cultural boundaries. Underlying today's relaxed attitude to color lies a chromatic complexity that speaks of wars, migrations and economics. While acknowledging the importance that technology has played in the development of new dyes, the chapters explore color as a catalyst for technical innovation that continues to inspire designers, artists, and performers. Bringing together cutting-edge contributions from leading scholars, it is essential reading for academics of fashion, textiles, design, cultural studies and art history.

Book Innovation and Creativity in Late Medieval and Early Modern European Cities

Download or read book Innovation and Creativity in Late Medieval and Early Modern European Cities written by Karel Davids and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-05-23 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Late medieval and early modern cities are often depicted as cradles of artistic creativity and hotbeds of new material culture. Cities in renaissance Italy and in seventeenth and eighteenth-century northwestern Europe are the most obvious cases in point. But, how did this come about? Why did cities rather than rural environments produce new artistic genres, new products and new techniques? How did pre-industrial cities evolve into centres of innovation and creativity? As the most urbanized regions of continental Europe in this period, Italy and the Low Countries provide a rich source of case studies, as the contributors to this volume demonstrate. They set out to examine the relationship between institutional arrangements and regulatory mechanisms such as citizenship and guild rules and innovation and creativity in late medieval and early modern cities. They analyze whether, in what context and why regulation or deregulation influenced innovation and creativity, and what the impact was of long-term changes in the political and economic sphere.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Caroline Evans analyses the work of experimental designers, the images of fashion photographers, and the spectacular fashion shows that developed in the final decade of the twentieth century to arrive at a new understanding of fashion's dark side and what it signifies? Drawing on a variety of literary and theoretical perspectives - from Marx to Benjamin - Evans argues that fashion plays a leading role in constructing images and meanings during periods of rapid change. She shows persuasively that fashion stands at the very centre of the contemporary, where it voices some of Western culture's deepest concerns.

Book Borderless Fashion Practice

  • Author : Vanessa Gerrie
  • Publisher : Rutgers University Press
  • Release : 2023-06-16
  • ISBN : 1978834381

Download or read book Borderless Fashion Practice written by Vanessa Gerrie and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2023-06-16 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Twenty-first century fashion practice has become increasingly borderless and diverse in the digital era, calling into question the very boundaries that define fashion in the Western cultural context. Borderless Fashion Practice: Contemporary Fashion in the Metamodern Age principally engages the work of four fashion designers -- Virgil Abloh, Aitor Throup, Iris Van Herpen, and Eckhaus Latta -- whose work intersects with other creative disciplines such as art, technology, science, architecture, and graphic design. They do their work in what Vanessa Gerrie calls the metamodern age -- the time and place where the polarization between the modern and the postmodern collapses. Used as a framework to understand the current Western cultural zeitgeist, Gerrie's exploration of the work of contemporary practitioners and theorists finds blurred borders and seeks to blur them further, to the point of erasure.
