Book The Climate Planner

Download or read book The Climate Planner written by Jason King and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-08-25 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Climate Planner is about overcoming the objections to climate change mitigation and adaption that urban planners face at a local level. It shows how to draft climate plans that encounter less resistance because they involve the public, stakeholders, and decisionmakers in a way that builds trust, creates consensus, and leads to implementation. Although focused on the local level, this book discusses climate basics such as carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, the Paris Agreement of 2015, worldwide energy generation forecasts, and other items of global concern in order to familiarize urban planners and citizen planners with key concepts that they will need to know in order to be able to host climate conversations at the local level. The many case studies from around the United States of America show how communities have encountered pushback and bridged the implementation gap, the gap between plan and reality, thanks to a commitment to substantive public engagement. The book is written for urban planners, local activists, journalists, elected or appointed representatives, and the average citizen worried about climate breakdown and interested in working to reshape the built environment.

  • Pages : 168 pages

Download or read book Peter Rose written by Peter Rose and published by . This book was released on 2010-02-03 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cambridge, Massachusetts-based architect Peter Rose has built on every scale during the first three decades of his practice. High-profile projects, such as his master plan for the Montreal waterfront and his award-winning Canadian Centre for Architecture in Montreal have brought him both public recognition and the respect of his peers. Besides being known for his artisan's love of solid building materials, craftsmanship, and old-fashioned building methods, it is perhaps no surprise that his residential projects function as laboratories for new ideas. Peter Rose: Houses presents five such houses in complete detail from client collaboration and site evaluation to construction. Rose draws inspiration from the outward simplicity and order of houses of the past but recognizes that their quiet strength depends on a complexity that comes only from thoughtful consideration of site, plan, exterior, and details. Rose insists on a close collaboration with his clients, who come to him because of his reputation for deliberately restrained, livable homes in harmony with the landscape. These residences and second homeson Martha's Vineyard, in New York City, Vermont, and Connecticutare masterful combinations of light, texture, and weight. They are an exquisite fusion of the natural and the man-made, of craft and architecture.

Book The American Planner

Download or read book The American Planner written by Donald A. Krueckeberg and published by Routledge. This book was released on 1994 with total page 556 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a book about the giants of American planning - the urban and regional planners who shaped the American landscape over the last century. In sensitive, compelling essays, the contributors explore the myths and virtues of the planning profession in human terms - the frustrations, hopes, anger, pride, fears, dreams, and foolishness of the leading practitioners of the field.Donald A. Krueckeberg's unique compilation of biographies shows how planners were molded by the conflicting demands of self and culture - and how that fusion was reflected in their actions and impacts on American society. Catherine Bauer, Alfred Bettman, Daniel Burnham, Kevin Lynch, Benton MacKaye, Lewis Mumford, Frederick Law Olmsted, Rexford Tugwell - and a host of other visionaries - come to life on the pages of this work. Why should we read these stories? "In the sharing of these secrets," Krueckeberg writes, "planners form a culture, a community of ideas and contentions that define and redefine our salvation in our practices." The book realizes the hope of all good biography: it shows how particular planners acquired their personalities from the demands of self and culture and how that fusion was reflected in their actions and their impacts on American society. This is essential reading for every planner, from student to hardened veteran.

Book A Lyric Architecture

Book excerpt: John Malick and Associates: New Classicists features superb photography of luxury homes in a range of traditional styles. The book is a valuable resource for architects, interior designers, builders, and home decorators Based in the San Francisco Bay Area in California, the classically trained architects of John Malick and Associates draw from numerous historical styles, including English Arts and Crafts, Mediterranean, and Georgian Colonial. Each project reflects the spirit of a unique time and place, while also addressing current needs and budgets. The projects featured in this monograph abandon the modern idiom and return to a time when buildings reflected noble achievements, pastoral visions, and sacred resonances. They embrace construction methods that revive the lost art of craftsmanship. Time-tested materials and picturesque details such as post-and-beam construction reflect the care and craft that are the signatures of artistic attention. Authentic finishes and hardware infuse a sense of beauty and livability rarely achieved by modern architecture. Through lush photography and engaging text, the reader is able to experience the sophistication of a Palladian neoclassical villa, the warmth of a Yorkshire cottage, and the sun-washed simplicity of a Mediterranean village nestled in the hills.

Book In Old Friendship

Download or read book In Old Friendship written by Frank G. Novak, Jr. and published by Syracuse University Press. This book was released on 2007-05-14 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1928 and 1981 architectural and cultural critic Lewis Mumford exchanged nearly six hundred letters with Melville scholar and Harvard psychologist Henry A. Murray. "In Old Friendship" documents that richly rewarding interaction. Covering fifty years of devoted camaraderie between two exceptional minds, the book offers profound insights into the intellectual frustrations behind their significant careers and the emotional needs that framed their vibrant, often dramatic lives. To Mumford, a writer who sought to change the course of world events, iconoclastic Murray became a welcome confidant, critic, mentor, and friend. The letters reflect the wide range of public and private interests held by both men. Love’s entanglements are aired alongside literary labors. By chronicling the private worlds of these intellectual icons, this volume emerges as a crucial research tool for students of American intellectual history and culture, literary criticism, urbanism, architecture, and political arenas such as World War II and the Cold War. It offers a unique prism through which to observe the dramatic shifts in American society and culture in the twentieth century.

Book A School Named for Thoreau

Download or read book A School Named for Thoreau written by Karl Rodman and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2013 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our school is named after Henry David Thoreau. The property on which the school is located is Camp Thoreau, a children's summer camp. It is also our year round home. What is more, the property is an old family farm which we try to keep in production. Henry David Thoreau taught school himself for a few years. I would like to think that he might have approved of some of the things that we have done here, although I know he would disapprove of the folly of owning a property of this size. Thoreau believed that owning a farm is a type of slavery. Thoreau left behind some good advice for writers of books: "The writer," he said "does not make books out of books, but he has been there in person." Hence this record of the four years in which I directed the Thoreau School.
