Book excerpt: Agroforestry, the word coined in early seventies, has made its place in all the developed and the developing countries of the world and is now recognized as an important approach to ensuring food security and rebuilding resilient rural environments. India has been an all-time leader in agroforestry. The South and Southeast Asia region comprising India is often described as the cradle of agroforestry. Almost all forms of agroforestry systems exist across India in ecozones ranging from humid tropical lowlands to high-altitude and temperate biomes, and perhumid rainforest zones to parched drylands. The country ranks foremost among the community of nations not only in terms of this enormous diversity and long tradition of the practice of agroforestry, but also in fostering scientific developments in the subject. Agroforestry applies to private agricultural and forest lands and communities that also include highly erodible, flood-prone, economically marginal and environmentally sensitive lands. The typical situation is agricultural, where trees are added to create desired benefits. Agroforestry allows for the diversification of farm activities and makes better use of environmental resources. Owing to an increase in the population of human and cattle, there is increasing demand of food as well as fodder, particularly in developing countries like India. So far, there is no policy that deals with specifics in agroforestry in India. But, the Indian Council of Agricultural Research has been discussing on the scope of having a National Agroforestry Policy in appropriate platforms. However, evolving a policy requires good and reliable datasets from different corners of the country on the subject matter. This synthesis volume containing 13 chapters is an attempt to collate available information in a classified manner into different system ecologies, problems and solutions, and converging them into a policy support.

Government of India implemented the farm Forestry Programme, a component of social Forestry Programme since 1980, to involve farms in tree plantation activities. Farm Forestry Programme was defined as the practice of forestry in all its aspects on farm or village land, generally integrated with other farm operation. It is a programme of planting of trees on bunds and boundaries of the fields of farmers and to be taken up by the farmers themselves. The Programme persuaded farmers to grow trees on farmlands, farm bunds and particularly in environmentally fragile areas, by distributing various tress species, which attracted large numbers of farmers in several states. considering the widespread adoption of the farm forestry programme by farmers particularly in Karnataka, this study has examined the development of social and Farm Forestry in India, assessed the economics of tree crops cultivated on farm vis-a-vis annual crops by using rigorous project appraisal techniques and other analytical tools, examined labour utilization and income generation, marketing aspects, and also environmental issues raised against certain tree species such as eucalyptus planted by farmers. Economic and environmental analysis of tree cultivation by farmers illustrated the profitability and other benefits accrued by farmers. The Study suggests for promoting afforestation activities for efficient use and management of land and tree resources. The study will be useful for researchers, policy makers and practitioners." Dr. S. Puttaswamaiah is Lecturer in the Department of Economics, Bangalore University, Bangalore. Having specialized in Environmental Economics, his areas of research interest include agricultural economics, health economics, public economics and development economics. Over the last several decades, within the irrigated rice-wheat growing lands of northern India, fast-growing poplar trees have been planted on tens of thousands of small farms. Recent debate regarding afforestation has raised the issue that water use is often increased when trees are planted. This ongoing debate focuses primarily on afforestation or reforestation of upland and rain-fed agricultural areas, and off-site impacts such as reduced streamflow. Adoption of poplar agroforestry in northern India, in contrast, is occurring in areas where land and water are already intensively used and managed for agricultural production. This study based on farmer survey data, used remote sensing and spatial hydrological modeling to investigate the importance and role of the poplar trees within the agricultural landscape, and to estimate their water use. Overall, results illustrate a potential for addressing the increasing global demand for wood products with trees grown on-farm within irrigated agroforestry systems.

With the approval of the idea by the Congress Organizing Committee, serious efforts to make it a reality got under way in early 2003. The rigorously peer-reviewed and edited manuscripts were submitted to the publisher in December 2003. Considering the many differentindividualsinvolved in the task as authors and manuscriptreviewers, we feel quite pleased that the task could be accomplished within this timeframe. We are pleased also about the contents on several counts. First of all, the tropical-temperate mix of topics is a rare feature of a publication of this nature. In spite of the scienti?c commonalities between tropical and temperate practices of agroforestry, the differences between them are so enormous that it is often impossible to mesh them together in one publication. Secondly, several of the chapters are on topics that have not been discussed or described much in agroforestryliterature.
