Book Agriculture People and Policies

Download or read book Agriculture People and Policies written by Graham Cox and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-08-06 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The structure and future of Britain’s agriculture sector are the central concerns of this volume, first published in 1986. It critically examines the mystique surrounding agriculture which has done much to underpin the special support the industry had enjoyed. The papers collected here address many of the key questions: What is distinctive about the social and economic organisation of agricultural production? What are the main factors which have influenced policy formation? And how are the policy makers likely to respond to widespread concern about the economic and environmental impact of those policies?

Book Farm Incomes Wealth and Agricultural Policy

Download or read book Farm Incomes Wealth and Agricultural Policy written by Berkeley Hill and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-02-05 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2000: The central aim of the Common Agricultural Policy is to support the incomes of farmers, yet reliable information on the overall incomes of farmers and their households is scarce. In general, farmers in the EU are not a low-income or poor sector of society and much of the present CAP income support goes to those that are relatively well-off. This book, the 3rd edition to address these issues, has been updated and expanded to include: updated coverage of statistics and references; the major changes in methodology of income measurement flowing from the 1995 revision of the European System of Accounts; a critical examination of wealth and balance sheets for the agricultural industry as currently calculated; incorporation of material from Japan and countries in Central and Eastern Europe that are candidates for EU membership.

  • Author : Alessandro Bonanno
  • Publisher : Routledge

Download or read book Small Farms written by Alessandro Bonanno and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-07-11 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why do small farms continue to coexist with ever-larger farming operations in advanced Western societies? Through a thorough case study of Italy and a comparative analysis of small farms in the United States, Dr. Bonanno seeks to answer this question, exploring the complex relationships among farm family members’ ideology and behavior, the small farm economic sector, and the interaction of small farms within the relevant spheres of society. He finds that, at the structural level, a lack of occupational alternatives and contradictions within both labor and land markets often force farmers to retain marginal farms despite personal dissatisfaction. At the ideological level, many farm families display deep attachment to the agrarian way of life and cite this as a fundamental reason for not leaving the farm for other work. Dr. Bonanno also analyzes the role of small farms within the social system and concludes that they serve a legitimative function. This legitimative role fosters contradictions within the social and economic systems that the state is unable to resolve, thus contributing to the continuation of a dual structure in agricultural development-־large and very large farms at one end of the scale and marginal but persistent small farms at the other.
