Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elisabeth and Theodore Weissberg, famous musicians, Hilde, a young film extra, and Vladek, an Eastern European adventurer wanted by the police on political charges, flee Nazi Germany for Shanghai at the onset of World War II. A magnet for every human ambition and vice, Shanghai is a city of extremes–of dazzling wealth and wretched poverty, suffering and pleasure, and, for the four refugees, exile and safety. There, they enter the world of Jewish refugees, many of them artists and intellectuals, who must either starve or eke out an impoverished and sometimes degraded living, but they are determined to live intelligently, upholding the high culture, humor, and even, insofar as they can, the elegance of their former lives. Master storyteller Angel Wagenstein crafts an intense narrative of life and death, passionate love, and profound courage against the backdrop of the war and the millions of lives caught up in it.

Download or read book Revealing Reveiling Shanghai written by Lisa Bernstein and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2020-08-01 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Revealing/Reveiling Shanghai provides international and interdisciplinary perspectives on representations of Shanghai, a contested location within political discourse and cultural imagination. Shanghai's complex history as a quasi-colonial city, and its contradictory identity as the birthplace of Communist China and the epitome of twenty-first-century capitalism, make it an especially fascinating subject. Contributors examine representations of Shanghai in film, art, literature, memoir, theater, and mass media from the past one hundred years. They address the ways in which texts from the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries have rewritten past and present Shanghai to reflect our own wishes and anguishes, show how the city resists static interpretations, and challenge notions of authentic representation and identity. By revealing and questioning persistent stereotypes and constructed versions of East and West, the essays offer diverse views so as to create a genuine exchange with contemporary global audiences. A wide variety of texts are discussed, including the films Street Angel (1937) and The White Countess (2005), and the novels The Song of Everlasting Sorrow (1996) and Shanghai Baby (1999).

Book Leaving China

    Book Details:
  • Author : Wanning Sun
  • Publisher : Rowman & Littlefield
  • Release : 2002
  • ISBN : 9780742517974
  • Pages : 260 pages

Download or read book Leaving China written by Wanning Sun and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2002 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than ever before, China is on the move. When the flow of people and images is fused, meanings of self, place, space, community, and nation become unstable and contestable. This fascinating book explores the ways in which movement within and across the national borders of the PRC has influenced the imagination of the Chinese people, both those who remain and those who have left. Travelers or no, all participate in the production and consumption of images and narratives of travel, thus contributing to the formation of transnational subjectivities. Wanning Sun offers a fine-grained analysis of the significant narrative forms and discursive strategies used in representing transnational space in contemporary China. This includes looking at how stay-at-homes fantasize about faraway or unknown places, and how those in the diaspora remember experiences of familiar places. She considers the ways in which mobility-of people, capital, and images-affects localities through individuals' constructions of a sense of place. Relatedly, the author illustrates how economic, social, and political forces either facilitate or inhibit the formation of a particular kind of transnational subjectivity.

Book Rural Health Care Delivery

Download or read book Rural Health Care Delivery written by Yi Hu and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-12-03 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Diseases are everyday, ordinary occurrences intimately related to people’s daily lives. However, as the metaphor of the “Sick Man of East Asia” emerged against the backdrop of a weak modern China, health care and the curing of diseases were turned into grand state politics with far-reaching implications. This book, starting with the argument for diseases being metaphors, describes and interprets such incidents in China’s history as the Abolishment of Traditional Chinese Medicine, the Patriotic Hygiene Campaign and the Cooperative Medical Services. In an effort to reveal the internal logic of disease politics in the transformation of the state-people relationship, the book analyzes key aspects including the politicization and inclusion of diseases in state governance, the double disciplining of hygiene, legitimacy construction of the state, the remaking of the nationals, and the expansion of the “publicness” of the state. The book argues that disease politics in modern China has developed following the path from nationals to the people, and then to citizens, or from crisis politics and mobilization politics to life politics. In addition, a marked change has occurred in China’s state building: increasingly standard, rationalized and institutionalized means have been employed while the non-standard means, such as large-scale mobilization and ideological coercion, had been historically used in China.

Book China Complex

Download or read book China Complex written by Shouhua Qi and published by ReadHowYouWant.com. This book was released on 2010-10-29 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than a century, the United States and China have been partners in an occasionally graceful but often awkward cultural-political tango. In this insightful narrative, Shouhua Qi, part of a new generation of scholars whose life experiences in China and the West serve as the basis for an acute analysis of cross-cultural perceptions, weaves literary and cultural criticism together with journeys across time, politics, and popular culture. Part memoir, Qi reveals the China complex as a manifestation of the search for meaning at many levels; personal, national, and global. With the future of the U.S. and China so intertwined now more than ever before, Qi's cogent assessment of the interpersonal foundations of the US-China relationship in the twenty-first century is a must-read.

Book Unless a Grain of Wheat

Download or read book Unless a Grain of Wheat written by W. A. Willis and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2010-01-24 with total page 582 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a biography of G. Christopher Willis, a Canadian missionary to China from 1921-1949. His Christian literature publishing and distribution was the last Protestant missionary work in China after the Communist takeover, continuing for another ten years under Communist rule. At a time when the church in China entered a period of prolonged spiritual famine, there remained a storehouse of Christian literature to feed the hungry and build up spiritual leaders, enabling them to faithfully feed their flocks. Today the church in China is the single most powerful witness of New Testament Christianity, standing as a witness to the Western church as it flounders in materialism and liberalism. This book is also a study of spiritual fruitfulness, using the biography as a case study to understand Jesus' words "Unless a grain of wheat" and their practical meaning in daily life. There is a way forward for a floundering Western church, to follow along the narrow path that Jesus has called it to walk.
