Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ghada Samman’s most recent novel, Farewell, Damascus is set in early 1960’s Damascus – a city that now languishes in the grip of corruption and political oppression following the Baathist takeover in Syria. The book opens as Zain Khayyal, a university student and aspiring young writer, plots an early-morning escape from her house as her husband slumbers. Her mission: to get an illicit abortion, plans for which she’s divulged to no one, and to announce that she wants out of her stifling marriage. A rebel and a trail-blazer par excellence, Zain draws down the wrath of polite society and the authorities, political and religious alike, as she challenges attitudes and practices that demean rather than dignify, and a ruling regime that sucks the life out of both oppressed and oppressor. As the plot unfolds, Zain finds her way as a student to a neighbouring country which, though it grants her the freedom, respect and appreciation she had lacked in her homeland, becomes a place of anguished exile. Armed with her accustomed humour, pathos and knack for suspense, Samman fearlessly tackles issues that roil societies across the globe to this day: the stigma that attaches to the divorced woman but not the divorced man; whether to choose a life partner for love, or for social status, prestige and material security; whether abortion is a crime or a means of forestalling needless undeserved suffering; lesbian intimacy as a declaration of freedom from male abuse and tyranny; rape as an instrument of humiliation and subjugation and unconditional acceptance as healing balm. Farewell, Damascus is both a paean to a beloved homeland and an ode to human dignity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE WAY OF LIGHT: The Way of Light focuses on the true Light (John 1:9) of the world (John 9:5) who came to enlighten every man to take him/her out of darkness (John 8:12). Any who do come to believe in the Light (Jesus) become sons and daughters of the Light, in fact children of the Light (1 Thessalonians 5:5). They will become Light bearers and shine as light in the world (Philippians 2:15). On numerous occasions within the context of these essays, the reader will encounter absolute truths regarding His being the Light. Readers will encounter various Scriptures which will testify to the claims Jesus made regarding His being the Saviour of the world. Most essays contain a minimum of 400 words, although some will be longer in length. Each essay will point the way to the Light (Jesus) in countless examples throughout the course of the book. For those who already follow the way of the Light (Jesus), they will discover examples as to how to share the Light (Jesus) with friends, family, relatives and associates. The Scripture states that none can come to Jesus unless the Father draws him/her (John 6:44) and that to be drawn into believing (faith) comes by the word of God (Romans 10:17). Many events point to a soon return of Jesus Christ who is the way, the truth and the life (John 14:6). THE WAY OF LIGHT in each of its individual compositions will point the reader to the true Way of Light.

Download or read book The Damascus Way Acts of Faith Book 3 written by Janette Oke and published by Baker Books. This book was released on 2011-01-01 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Julia has everything money can buy...except for acceptance by either the Gentiles or the Jews. Her Greek father already has a wife and family, leaving Julia and her Hebrew mother second-class citizens. But when they are introduced to followers of the Way, they become part of that community of believers. Abigail's brother, Jacob, now a young man, is attempting to discover his own place as a Christian. He is concerned that being more serious about his faith means trading away the exhilaration of his current profession as a caravan guard. Hired by Julia's father to protect the wealthy merchant's caravans on the secretive "Frankincense Trail"--undercover transport of this highly valuable commodity--Jacob also passes letters and messages between various communities of believers. He is alarmed to find out that Julia, hardly more than a girl, is also a messenger. Can their immediate mistrust be put aside to finally bring their hearts together?

Book Farewell My Beloved Goodbye Dear Leader

Download or read book Farewell My Beloved Goodbye Dear Leader written by Brigitte M. Wareham and published by Austin Macauley Publishers. This book was released on 2024-04-26 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The only certainty in life is death. Even the most powerful leaders throughout history were unable to cheat the Grim Reaper. World leaders, whether revered or reviled, are rarely allowed to exit gracefully from life but instead receive a state funeral, a major international event incorporating splendid symbols and messages, religious faith, and tradition. The body of Tsar Alexander III was carried across half of Russia before finally being buried in St. Petersburg. People paid obscene amounts of money for a room that gave a glimpse of Queen Victoria’s fascinating State funeral. The cortège for China’s Empress-Dowager Cixi was not to be photographed – nevertheless photos showed up a century later. For political reasons Generalissimo Franco’s body was exhumed decades after his death. The world became acquainted with a rather unusual ancient Roman Catholic ritual, when Pope John Paul I died. The body of India’s Indira Gandhi was confined to sacred flames. The last journey of Marshal Tito turned into an event of “Funeral Diplomacy”, whilst Khomeini’s funeral ended in frenzy and tumult. In 2021 the massive restrictions imposed due to the Covid-19 pandemic meant a rigid downsizing of Prince Philip’s funeral, hardly any guests were allowed to attend. This revealing and entertaining book provides an insight into unique obsequies from across the world, seen as both a celebration of life and the honouring of death.

Book The Lanterns of the King of Galilee

Download or read book The Lanterns of the King of Galilee written by Ibrāhīm Naṣr Allāh and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2014 with total page 566 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In eighteenth-century Palestine, on the shores of Galilee's Lake Tiberias, visionary political and military leader Dahir al-Umar al-Zaydani undertakes a journey toward the greatest aim anyone could hope to achieve in his day: the establishment of an autonomous Arab state. To do so he must challenge the rule of the greatest power in the world at the time--the Ottoman Empire--while translating the ideals of human dignity, justice, and religious tolerance into concrete daily realities. In this compelling story of love and loss, victory and defeat, loyalty and betrayal, award-winning poet and novelist Ibrahim Nasrallah, author of the Arabic Booker shortlisted Time of White Horses, once again brings Palestinian history alive with a set of characters and events both real and imagined to capture the essence of a rich and dramatic epoch in the turbulent annals of a land that has been fought over for millennia.

Book The Soul of Iran A Nation s Struggle for Freedom

Download or read book The Soul of Iran A Nation s Struggle for Freedom written by Afshin Molavi and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2010-07-12 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The truths about Iran; quite different truths from versions put forward by Washington, Tehran, and the media. Iran thundered onto the world stage in 1979 with an Islamic revolution that shook the world. Today that revolution has gone astray, a popular democracy movement boldly challenges authority, and young Iranians are more interested in moving to America than in chanting "Death to America." Afshin Molavi, born in Iran and fluent in Persian, traveled widely across his homeland, exploring the legacy of the Iranian revolution and probing the soul of Iran, a land with nearly three millennia of often-glorious history. Like a master Persian carpet maker, Molavi weaves together threads of rich historical insight, political analysis, cultural observation, and the daily realities of life in the Islamic republic to produce a colorful, intricate, and mesmerizing narrative. Originally published in hardcover under the title Persian Pilgrimages, this paperback edition is revised, with a new introduction and epilogue.
