Book The State of the World s Forests 2018

Download or read book The State of the World s Forests 2018 written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2018-07-06 with total page 139 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nearly three years ago, world leaders agreed to the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) – the central framework for guiding development policies throughout the world. This edition of The State of the World’s Forests is aimed at enhancing our understanding of how forests and their sustainable management contribute to achieving several of the SDGs. Time is running out for the world’s forests: we need to work across sectors, bring stakeholders together, and take urgent action. The State of the World’s Forests 2018 identifies actions that can be taken to increase the contributions of forests and trees that are necessary to accelerate progress towards the SDGs. It is now critical that steps be taken to work more effectively with the private sector, and the informal forest sector must be transformed in order to bring broader economic, social and environmental benefits. Seventy years ago, when FAO completed its first assessment of the world’s forest resources, the major concern was whether there would be enough timber to supply global demand; now we recognize the greater global relevance of our forests and trees. For the first time, The State of the World’s Forests 2018 provides an assessment of the contribution of forests and trees to our landscapes and livelihoods. The purpose of this publication is to provide a much wider audience with an understanding of why forests and trees matter for people, the planet and posterity.

Download or read book Trees Outside Forests written by R. Bellefontaine and published by Food & Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO). This book was released on 2002 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trees outside forests (including fruit trees, trees in parks, fields, those growing in the wild and as amenities), together with forests and other woodlands, contribute to the structure of the landscape, generate numerous environmental and social services, and yield important food, drink and fuel products as well as meeting other domestic needs of urban and rural populations. However, trees outside forests are not well documented and receive little attention in the formulation of national forestry policy and planning. This publication seeks to fill this gap, by providing information on the role of these resources and options for their integration in territorial management policies.

Book Making forest concessions in the tropics work to achieve the 2030 Agenda

Download or read book Making forest concessions in the tropics work to achieve the 2030 Agenda written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2018-07-30 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The specific objective of these Voluntary Guidelines is to promote the sustainable management of public production natural forests in tropical countries through forest concessions, thereby fulfilling their potential contribution to the achievement of Agenda 2030. Forest concession regimes are treated here as forest policy instruments, and should be aligned with the sustainable forest management objectives agreed by countries in the UNFF. The current Guidelines intend to serve as guidance for making forest concessions an effective economic instrument of forest policy in the context of the 2030 Agenda, transforming them into an instrument capable of delivering sustainable forest management in all its dimensions, and generating socio-economic benefits to relevant stakeholders.

Download or read book Forestry for a low carbon future written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2016 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forests are critical to mitigation, having a dual role; they function globally as a carbon sink but are also responsible for about 10 to 12 percent of global emissions. Forests and forest products offer both developing and developing countries with a wide range of options for timely and cost-effective mitigation. Afforestation / reforestation offers the best option because of its short timescale and ease of implementation. Reducing deforestation, especially due to the possibility for immediate action. Yet forest contributions to mitigation. Wood products and wood energy can replace fossil-intense products in other sectors, creating a virtuous cycle towards low-carbon economies. The mitigation potential and costs of the various options differ greatly by activity, region, system boundaries and time horizon. Policymakers must decide on the optimal mix of options, adapted to local circumstances, for meeting national climate change and development goals. This publication assesses the options and highlights the enabling conditions, opportunities and potential bottlenecks.
