Book Undernourishment and Economic Growth

Download or read book Undernourishment and Economic Growth written by Jean-Louis Arcand and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2001 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper investigates the effect of undernourishment on economic growth. In addition to the basic relationship on health, a number of other important relationships are investigated: (a) regional differences regarding the impact of under-nourishment on growth; (b) the impact that possible errors in measuring nutritional variables may have on the robustness of the estimated nutrition-growth relationship; and (c) the existence of "nutritional traps", i.e. the vicious circle of low nutrition-low economic growth-low nutrition. The basic conclusion of the paper - that undernourishment can be a serious handicap in the efforts of countries to achieve economic growth - suggests that actions taken to feed the hungry have a strong growth dimension in addition to their humanitarian character.

Book Applications of the Contingent Valuation Method in Developing Countries

Download or read book Applications of the Contingent Valuation Method in Developing Countries written by Anna Alberini and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2000 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Agriculture, in addition to producing food, hides and fibre, also provides many other goods and services not priced in the market. These include environmental outputs such as rural amenities and disamenities, but also social and cultural functions. The economic value of these non-market goods and services of agriculture can be assessed by estimating how much purchasing power people would be willing to give up to acquire those outputs if they were forced to make a choice. The contingent valuation method (CVM) is one of the most widely used methodologies developed for the measurement of the value of non-market goods.

Book Poverty Alleviation Through Agricultural Projects

Download or read book Poverty Alleviation Through Agricultural Projects written by Emmanuel H. D'Silva and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 1992-01-01 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Of the estimated 1 billion people in the developing world who survive in conditions of extreme poverty, 70 percent live in Asia. The majority of these people live in rural areas and agriculture is their main occupation. Most of the rural poor are small and marginal farmers, landless agricultural workers, fisherfolk, artisans, female headed households, the aged and infirm, and children. The incidence of poverty is highest among female heads of households and children. The seminar on "Poverty Alleviation through Agricultural Projects" provided thirty development practitioners with an opportunity to consider strategies, policies, and practices that help alleviate rural poverty. The seminar discussed four key issues of relevance to policy makers: (1) poverty cannot be measured by income alone; (2) poverty cannot be alleviated through a short-term, piecemeal approach; (3) agricultural projects constitute one of the many means available to governments for alleviating rural poverty; and (4) the role of public sector in poverty alleviation needs to be reconsidered.

Book Rural Energy Development in China

Download or read book Rural Energy Development in China written by Robert P. Taylor and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-17 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this title, originally published in 1981, author Robert P. Taylor calls for a greater understanding of rural energy supply and consumption patterns in the developing countries. Here, Taylor specifically examines the rural energy development in China as it is the world’s largest developing country in terms of population, and it has encountered many of the rural energy problems common in other developing countries. This study provides an analysis of China’s rural energy economy from before 1949 to a general discussion of achievements in rural energy development and the rural energy economy in 1981. This is an ideal title for students interested in environmental studies and development studies.

Book Water Resources and Inter Riparian Relations in the Nile Basin

Download or read book Water Resources and Inter Riparian Relations in the Nile Basin written by Okbazghi Yohannes and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2009-01-01 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human demand for water resources is rising at an alarming rate in response to rapid population growth, rival development requirements, and the depletion of ecological resources. In this book, Okbazghi Yohannes examines the various facets of the competition for water resources among the ten Nile River Basin countries as they compete to harness the river's resources for purposes of irrigation-based agriculture and hydropower-based industrialization. Through a careful investigation of the rival states' strategies to capture greater shares of water resources, Yohannes assesses the lasting impact on the watershed ecology in the basin and on the hydrological demand of the river itself. He proposes the formation of a radically different water regime to address the looming demographic crisis, the stark regional food insecurity, and the region's collapsing hydro-ecology. This book shows how the effort to construct a regional water regime cannot be separated from the necessity to construct an ecologically sustainable internal water regime in each co-basin state, particularly in terms of ecological resources conservation and ecosystem services protection.

Book Structural Adjustment and the Agricultural Sector in Latin America and the Caribbean

Download or read book Structural Adjustment and the Agricultural Sector in Latin America and the Caribbean written by John Weeks and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-01-03 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a result of the regional debt crisis, most governments of Latin America in the 1980s entered into a process of profound policy change, from an import substitution oriented strategy to a focus upon export-promotion, with an emphasis upon market liberalisation. According to mainstream economic theory, the effect of this shift would be to favour agriculture. This book, with contributors from Latin America and Europe, surveys the results on agriculture of a decade of policy change, and to produce new and unexpected insights.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While the design of adjustment policies in the latter part of the 1980s has generally shown greater attention to their impact on growth and social implications, this book argues that several orthodox adjustment policies are still incongruent with long-term development in Africa. It goes on to discuss a development strategy which could lead to a much awaited economic recovery and improvement in social conditions in Africa in the 1990s drawing its conclusions from a general theoretical discussion and national case-studies.
