Book Her Heart Can See

Download or read book Her Heart Can See written by Edith Waldvogel Blumhofer and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2005-05-12 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fanny J. Crosby (1820-1915) was the most prolific of all American hymn writers. Having lost her sight in infancy through a doctor's negligence, Fanny went on to compose more than 9,000 hymns, as well as various other songs, cantatas, and lyrical productions. Crosby's hymns, including such all-time favorites as "Blessed Assurance," continue to be sung around the world. She was also involved with New York City's rescue missions and with other benevolent efforts. She rubbed shoulders with the likes of Henry Clay, Grover Cleveland, Winfield Scott, Dwight L. Moody, Ira Sankey, Jenny Lind, P.T. Barnum, and many other famous figures who people these pages. Drawing on primary sources, including thousands of unpublished manuscripts, Blumhofer sorts fact from fiction in the life of this remarkable nineteenth-century northeastern Protestant woman, in the process showing why "this diminutive woman" was so beloved.--From publisher description.

Book excerpt: Here, in Fanny Crosby's own words, is the story of her life, from birth and the event that caused her blindness at six weeks of age, to her eighty-sixth year. With warmth and sensitivity she recounts how she began to write poetry and went on to become the most prolific hymn writer of the late 1800s. Fanny Crosby writes, By including even some incidents that, in themselves, may seem trivial, I have tried to make this account a full and accurate biography. In modesty, however, I have also desired to render my story as simple as possible, in fact, to give a vivid picture of my work, my opinions and my aspirations, not only as a teacher but also as a writer of sacred songs. In her first chapter Fanny Crosby describes her own story as flowers plucked from the garden of memory. Her recollections are truly a bouquet of memories. Both text and photos capture the multicolored hues of nineteenth-century life and the career of a beloved hymn writer who was wholly dedicated to her craft. Included are personal insights about noted politicians, generals, evangelists, and fellow hymn writers.

Book excerpt: Fanny Crosby's Memories of Eighty Years is a delightful recollection of her life's work to labor for the Lord, which she did with purity of thought, action and deed. A renowned hymn-writer of over 8000 hymns, her writing was always one of painting pictures in the mind. But after she was saved, her God-given talent for writing hymns and poems rose to new celestial heights; her star of promise became an orb of light. For over 30 years she spoke at missions including the Bowery Mission in New York City, Young Men's Christian Associations, Sabbath schools, and churches of many creeds. She won people to Christ by the Living Word delivered with kindness, as a balm of comfort, and with spiritual assurance that one's true home is seated in the heavenlies. Fanny Crosby wrote this memoir with a refreshing honesty and transparency that endears her to all who read it.

Book excerpt: Fanny Crosby's celebrated autobiography chronicles her life and achievements writing Christian poetry and hymnals in amazing quantity. Renowned as one of the 19th century's greatest hymn writers and lyricists, Fanny Crosby was the victim of grave misfortune during her infancy. As a baby only a few weeks old, her eyes became inflamed - the doctor visited by her family suggested a procedure to alleviate the symptoms, but it was a failure: Fanny became completely and permanently blind. Despite this grave loss of sight, the young Fanny proved a bright child and a capable student. In particular she had a gift for words and was markedly devoted to the Christian Lord. These two attributes would soon characterize her rise to renown; as well as publishing well-received and celebrated hymns, Fanny was diligent in accomplishing mission work far from home. By maturity, Fanny Crosby was a national celebrity, her hymns and songs were sung in hundreds of churches. Those who visited her would marvel at her capacity to invent and arrange songs seemingly at will; it was a gift which Fanny always remained humbly thankful for. During and after her life, her prolific body of creative work and success in spite of lifelong disability would act as inspiration for many people.

Not illustrated. 1905 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER XXVI.--1843-1903. OLDEST AND NEWEST HYMNS. I AM often asked, "Do you write as many hymns as ever ?" Perhaps not, quite: but this is owing to the fact that I spend so much time visiting churches in different parts of the country, and speaking, and reading my poems to audiences. My relations with Christian Endeavor Societies, and Young Men's Christian Associations, are also very intimate and friendly: and I often address them. I wear a gold badge of membership, presented me by one of the Railroad Branches of the Y. M. C. A.: and prize it more than as if it were studded with diamonds. How valuable such tokens are, when we feel that they come from the heart! I include in this chapter some of my earliest and some of my latest hymns: others can be found in various hymn-books. In one of those here published, it will be noticed, words and music are both by myself: but I have heretofore been content to write the words, and let others furnish the music. This is the only case in which I have departed from the rule. While writing my earlier poems, I did not attempt hymns: although my mind was often drawn in that direction. I greatly admired the grand productions of Watts, Wesley, Montgomery, and others: but it did not then occur to me that I could write hymns that people would care to sing. Still, I am convinced now, that events were shaping to make it possible for me to take up what proved to be my real life-work. Everything in this world is progressive, and courage and ambition are no exception to the rule. I seem to have been led, little by little, toward my life-work: and believe that the same fact will appear in the life of any one, who will cultivate such powers as God has given him, and then go on, bravely, quietly, but persistently, ...
