Nevertheless, the ones here chosen are broadly representative of the best in line and color that our country has yet produced: and while their work is not considered to the exclu sion of other noted names, it will always be shown with the foremost examples of its period. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gallery of Famous Painters: A History of Art in All Counties and Ages It is not altogether impossible that our worthy citizen himself may have undergone something of this kind, long ago perhaps, when he was younger, less prosperous, and less careworn. There is no doubt that the mind is more open to such impressions in the days of sweet youth; unless, indeed, they take such lasting root there, as to preserve the mind in perpetual youth, amidst the decay and death of nature. Book Painters and Painting Classic Reprint

Download or read book Painters and Painting Classic Reprint written by Sir Frederick Wedmore and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-23 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explore the history of art with this discussion of some of the world's greatest painters and their works. Wedmore's book opens with a brief introduction to painting, in which the author declares, "Of all pictorial Arts, major and minor... it is Painting that makes to the mass of us the easiest and most fascinating appeal." Wedmore holds painting alongside literature as a valuable record of the past, and believes the works of the world's great painters provides civilization with portals into specific periods of history. He does not hide his preferences, but rather embraces them as he takes the reader on a journey through time and place while discussing his most revered artists. Chapters are devoted to individuals such as Durer, Holbein, Hogarth, and Romney, as well as broader topics such as Spanish painters, later English art, French eighteenth-century art, and impressionism. A series of black and white reproductions serves as an appendix. Wedmore's book is one that will appeal to art historians or anybody that loves painting. It is a reference book, but one that does not pretend to be all encompassing. This is one man's guide (albeit one highly learned man) to his personal favorite artists, and does not attempt to be anything else. Wedmore does not apologize for leaving certain artists out of this book, and the reader ultimately benefits from the author's convictions. Painters and Painting is a wonderful book about a selection of the world's great artists and their paintings and fully deserves its place in anyone's library. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Famous Pictures Described With Anecdotes of the Painters It has been the endeavor of the author to fix the attention of the reader upon the painting itself - to tell something of its qualities as a picture and to impart some little idea of the painter's art. Besides this, there is much collateral interest in the pictures selected - interest directly related to things which every one must sooner or later know. The original paintings have touched the hearts and interested the minds of all classes and conditions of men; and they form one of the great magnets that annually draw a vast army of travelers across seas and continents. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Great Artists To this day there is a spirit of reverence that inspires the visitor to this region. N o wonder that, in Raphael's time when this Spirit was fresh and strong, it gave a character of piety and sweetness to the works of all the painters of Umbria. From these two causes, the secluded position of the region and the influence of Saint Francis, arose what Is called the Umbrian school of painting. All painters belonging to this school made pictures very. Beautiful and full of fine religious feeling. One April morning in 1483, to the home of Giovanni Santi, the painter, and his wife Magia, a dear little boy came, as millions of boys and girls have since come, to cheer and to bless. The father and mother were very proud of their little son, and feeling perhaps that a more than ordinary child had been given them, they gave him the name of Raphael, as one of good omen. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Great French Painters: And the Evolution of French Painting From 1830 to the Present Day Ome explanation will be necessary to justify the composition of this book. Its programme is vast; it is to compress into a rapid sketch seventy years that have given to the French School some of its greatest masters and an imposing number of artists of high merit. In what spirit, in what order are we to consider them? This, for the sake of clearness, had better be defined at the outset. But of one thing I feel certain: if the not insignificant period of artistic history of which this book treats has brought forth one or several artists worthy of those Masters, it is among those I have studied here that he or they will be found.
