Download or read book No Place to Go written by Nancy Janovicek and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2011-11-01 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first history of the battered women's shelter movement in Canada, No Place to Go traces the development of transition houses and services for abused women and the campaign that made wife battering a political issue. Nancy Janovicek focuses on women's groups in small cities and rural communities, examining anti-violence activism in Thunder Bay, Kenora, Nelson, and Moncton. She also pays close attention to Aboriginal women in northwestern Ontario, where the connections between family violence and the devaluation of indigenous culture in Canadian society complicated effots to end domestic violence. This book lays bare the aims and challenges of establishing women's shelters in non-urban areas. The local histories presented here show how transition houses became hubs in a larger movement to change attitudes about domestic violence and to lobby for legislation to protect women.

Book excerpt: This book heralds a new generation of Christians who are more than bold…they are fearless! Tony Perkins pairs each story with a biblical example and gives practical ideas for building a “no fear” perspective every day. Yet even in such a hostile cultural and political environment, it is an exciting time to stand firm in the faith. You have been chosen to live in this important hour, and reading these stories will inspire you to the same kind of courage. So what are you waiting for? “Tony Perkins has discovered a new generation of young people who love following God more than the crowd...You will discover there is still hope for America and the world after reading their stories in No Fear!” —Todd Starnes, Fox News Channel “No Fear...is a must-read book that will inspire a courageous heart in tomorrow’s movers and shakers. —Dana Loesch, nationally syndicated radio host, author, host BlazeTV “As the world continues to spiral into an anti-Christian age, it’s important to empower our young people with the strength and conviction to hold fast to the teachings of Christ, and No Fear does just that.” —Dr. Jack Graham, Senior Pastor, Prestonwood Baptist Church Includes discussion questions after each chapter.
Download or read book Family Centres and their International Role in Social Action written by Chris Warren-Adamson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-10-05 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2001: Family centre practice is one of the success stories of the past twenty years. As well as contributing creative ideas to centre practice this important edited collection highlights the role of practitioners as developmental or informal educationalists. International contributors challenge care management in child protection as the dominant discourse in child care social work and instead advance integrated practice in the internationally developing role of family centres as a more authentic and hopeful practice for children and families. The contributors outline ways of avoiding reductionism - social work reduced to a protective and assessment role - and show how socially inclusive practice can be sustained with very marginalized families. The book argues that there is a need for the social work training curriculum to emphasize social work's debt to social and informal education, and concludes with a call for an international forum of family centre practice.
Download or read book Practising Community Based Participatory Research written by Shauna MacKinnon and published by Purich Books. This book was released on 2018-04-01 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is increasing pressure on university scholars to reach beyond the “ivory tower” and engage in collaborative research with communities. But what does this actually mean? What is community-based participatory research (CBPR) and what does engagement look like? This book presents stories about CBPR from past and current Manitoba Research Alliance projects in socially and economically marginalized communities. Bringing together experienced researchers with new scholars and community practitioners, the stories describe the impetus for the research projects, how they came to be implemented, and how CBPR is still being used to effect change within the community. The projects, ranging from engagement in public policy advocacy to learning from Elders in First Nations communities, were selected to demonstrate the breadth of experiences of those involved and the many different methods used. By providing space for researchers and their collaborators to share the stories behind their research, this book offers valuable lessons and rich insights into the power and practice of CBPR.
Download or read book Beyond Crazy written by Julia Nunes and published by McClelland & Stewart. This book was released on 2011-06-22 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In any given year, one in five Canadians will experience symptoms of mental disorder. So why do we still have such a long way to go towards true understanding and acceptance? Because people are afraid to talk. Beyond Crazy takes us beyond the barriers of fear and stigma to meet real Canadians from all walks of life who have encountered mental illness. They tell stories of what it is like to journey to the edge of the abyss and back again, of what it is like to suffer deep psychosis or depression, a misdiagnosis, a life-threatening eating disorder, the suicide of a loved one. And they tell stories of hope recovered, of finding the road back to wellness, of families made stronger than ever. Using the most honest and compelling language – and often a good dose of humour – brave celebrities and unsung heroes tell it like it is. By doing so, they make it easier for those who follow, easier to get past the fear, to move beyond crazy.

Download or read book Partnerships for Prevention written by Geoffrey Nelson and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2005-01-01 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Highfield Community Enrichment Project is one of eight demonstration sites for the 'Better Beginnings, Better Futures' initiative, a comprehensive, community-driven program dedicated to the prevention of children's mental health problems in Ontario and the promotion of child, family, and community wellness. Drawing from this multi-method, longitudinal research project, authors Geoffrey Nelson, S. Mark Pancer, Karen Hayward, and Ray DeV. Peters have written Partnerships for Prevention, providing insights and lessons on how prevention programs can be planned, implemented, and managed in a low-income, multicultural context with a high degree of community involvement. The authors demonstrate not just that the program works, but how it works, and in so doing make a contribution to theory, research, and practice in primary prevention and mental health promotion for children. Partnerships for Prevention provides a great deal of knowledge that will be of interest and use to policy-makers, program planners, practitioners, and community residents, who wish to create prevention programs.
