Book Bedtime Math A Fun Excuse to Stay Up Late

Download or read book Bedtime Math A Fun Excuse to Stay Up Late written by Laura Overdeck and published by Feiwel & Friends. This book was released on 2013-06-25 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bedtime Math wants to change the way we introduce math to children: to make math a fun part of kids' everyday lives. We all know it's wonderful to read bedtime stories to kids, but what about doing math? Many generations of Americans are uncomfortable with math and numbers, and too often we hear the phrase, "I'm just not good at math!" For decades, this attitude has trickled down from parents to their kids, and we now have a culture that finds math dry, intimidating, and just not cool. Bedtime Math wants to change all that. Inside this book, families will find fun, mischief-making math problems to tackle—math that isn't just kid-friendly, but actually kid-appealing. With over 100 math riddles on topics from jalapeños and submarines to roller coasters and flamingos, this book bursts with math that looks nothing like school. And with three different levels of challenge (wee ones, little kids, and big kids), there's something for everyone. We can make numbers fun, and change the world, one Bedtime Math puzzle at a time.

Book Early Childhood Mathematics Education Research

Download or read book Early Childhood Mathematics Education Research written by Julie Sarama and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2009-04-01 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This important new book synthesizes relevant research on the learning of mathematics from birth into the primary grades from the full range of these complementary perspectives. At the core of early math experts Julie Sarama and Douglas Clements's theoretical and empirical frameworks are learning trajectories—detailed descriptions of children’s thinking as they learn to achieve specific goals in a mathematical domain, alongside a related set of instructional tasks designed to engender those mental processes and move children through a developmental progression of levels of thinking. Rooted in basic issues of thinking, learning, and teaching, this groundbreaking body of research illuminates foundational topics on the learning of mathematics with practical and theoretical implications for all ages. Those implications are especially important in addressing equity concerns, as understanding the level of thinking of the class and the individuals within it, is key in serving the needs of all children.

Book excerpt: This approach to teaching basic math facts, grounded in years of research, will transform students' learning of basic facts and help them become more confident, adept, and successful at math. Mastering the basic facts for addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division is an essential goal for all students. Most educators also agree that success at higher levels of math hinges on this fundamental skill. But what's the best way to get there? Are flash cards, drills, and timed tests the answer? If so, then why do students go into the upper elementary grades (and beyond) still counting on their fingers or experiencing math anxiety? What does research say about teaching basic math facts so they will stick? In Math Fact Fluency, experts Jennifer Bay-Williams and Gina Kling provide the answers to these questions—and so much more. This book offers everything a teacher needs to teach, assess, and communicate with parents about basic math fact instruction, including The five fundamentals of fact fluency, which provide a research-based framework for effective instruction in the basic facts. Strategies students can use to find facts that are not yet committed to memory. More than 40 easy-to-make, easy-to-use games that provide engaging fact practice. More than 20 assessment tools that provide useful data on fact fluency and mastery. Suggestions and strategies for collaborating with families to help their children master the basic math facts. Math Fact Fluency is an indispensable guide for any educator who needs to teach basic math facts.

Book Development and Implementation of Family Math Night To Build Student Achievement and Basic Skills

Download or read book Development and Implementation of Family Math Night To Build Student Achievement and Basic Skills written by Karri N. Moran and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 61 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this special project was to strengthen the mathematical skills of students through the power of family interaction. By hosting a Family Math Night educators are encouraging families to appreciate the energy and pleasure of mathematics. By participating in the Family Math Night, parents are serving as role models for their children with the message of quality family time together strengthens overall proficiency in mathematics. Many of the goals of the evening were to provide parents with the opportunity to experience their child's math class interactively, to promote quality family time that is difficult for many families to find, to develop students' mathematical skills, to demonstrate the positive effects of hands-on-learning in mathematics, to apply mathematical skills that have been disguised as enjoyable games and activities, to provide family members ways they can support mathematical learning at home, and to show parents how critical mathematics is to their child's success throughout life. Research has shown that quality family time spent playing mathematical games or activities outside of the classroom leads to a higher student success in mathematics. By providing an opportunity for families to bond together through mathematical activities, students of all ages gain mathematical skills that are essential to their success. Family Math Night was an undertaking that incorporated months of planning activities, invitations, save the dates, and supplies; numerous volunteers, and inventive approaches to guarantee family participation. The evening confirmed that families who participate in mathematical learning help boost their student's success. Bonding as a family is vital to a student's overall achievement in mathematics and school. While observing families involved in math based activities at the Family Math Night it was obvious that everyone was participating because they were enjoying the activities with one another. Smiles, mathematical thinking, engaged students and parents, happiness, and positive relationships filled the school building for a short two hours that evening. The Family Math Night brought families together at school and will continue to be an important middle school activity. It provided data that supports the concept that families who participate in mathematical tasks together build stronger relationships and mathematical skills for their children. Educators demonstrated the importance and pleasure that mathematics plays in the lives of children. Parents illustrated to their children that they are positive role models who support overall proficiency in mathematics through hands-on activities. Together educators and parents are building the foundation for students' educational success.
