Book Mental Disorders and Disabilities Among Low Income Children

Download or read book Mental Disorders and Disabilities Among Low Income Children written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2015-10-28 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Children living in poverty are more likely to have mental health problems, and their conditions are more likely to be severe. Of the approximately 1.3 million children who were recipients of Supplemental Security Income (SSI) disability benefits in 2013, about 50% were disabled primarily due to a mental disorder. An increase in the number of children who are recipients of SSI benefits due to mental disorders has been observed through several decades of the program beginning in 1985 and continuing through 2010. Nevertheless, less than 1% of children in the United States are recipients of SSI disability benefits for a mental disorder. At the request of the Social Security Administration, Mental Disorders and Disability Among Low-Income Children compares national trends in the number of children with mental disorders with the trends in the number of children receiving benefits from the SSI program, and describes the possible factors that may contribute to any differences between the two groups. This report provides an overview of the current status of the diagnosis and treatment of mental disorders, and the levels of impairment in the U.S. population under age 18. The report focuses on 6 mental disorders, chosen due to their prevalence and the severity of disability attributed to those disorders within the SSI disability program: attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, oppositional defiant disorder/conduct disorder, autism spectrum disorder, intellectual disability, learning disabilities, and mood disorders. While this report is not a comprehensive discussion of these disorders, Mental Disorders and Disability Among Low-Income Children provides the best currently available information regarding demographics, diagnosis, treatment, and expectations for the disorder time course - both the natural course and under treatment.

Book The Costs of Caring

Download or read book The Costs of Caring written by Sally Baldwin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-12-22 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1985, this book considers the financial consequences of parents and other relatives caring for severely disabled children at home. At the time of publication little reliable information was available on the costs incurred by ‘informal carers’, which this book set to rectify. The volume interweaves hard statistical material about money with the detailed personal responses of parents. It examines the claim that disablement in a child reduces parents’ earnings while simultaneously creating an extra expense. The author compares the incomes and expenditure patterns of more than 500 families with disabled children and 700 control families of the time showing that the financial effects of disablement in a child can be far-reaching and pervasive. This book discusses contemporary policy implications of these findings in a chapter dealing with the rational for compensating families with disabled children, and in the final chapter. Although the book was original published in 1985, it references issues that are still important today and, whilst its main concern is families with disabled children, it will also be useful to anyone caring for other kinds of dependent people, such as the elderly.

Book Disability Household Income Expenditure

Download or read book Disability Household Income Expenditure written by Alison Matthews and published by Stationery Office Books (TSO). This book was released on 1990 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are incomes and living conditions in households which include disabled people as good as those which don't? What extra financial costs are incurred by disability? How do the spending habits of the two types of household vary? This report examines these issues by analyzing the income and expenditure patterns of households containing a disabled adult member in comparison with other households. It finds that total gross incomes of the first category were considerably lower than those of other households, that the total spending of these households was substantially less than the others, and that disabled people generally experience a lower standard of living than their able-bodied counterparts.

Book The Financial Circumstances of Families with Disabled Children Living in Private Households

Download or read book The Financial Circumstances of Families with Disabled Children Living in Private Households written by Malcolm Smyth and published by . This book was released on 1989-01-01 with total page 55 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Families with disabled children are less likely than the general population of families to have earned income, and parents in such families have, on average, lower incomes than other parents. Using the family as the basic unit for data collection and analysis, this report describes the characteristics for the families of disabled children which are relevant to their financial circumstances, and examines income from earnings, benefits and other sources, to provide a full an detailed account of the ways in which a child's disability can affect the financial situation of the family as a whole. As well as looking at the impact of a child's disability on parents' earnings, it also aims to establish the extent of expenditure incurred as a result of disability. It should be of interest to all those working with disabled children living in private households.
