Book History and Genealogy of the Eastman Family of America Classic Reprint

Download or read book History and Genealogy of the Eastman Family of America Classic Reprint written by Guy Scoby Rix and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-16 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History and Genealogy of the Eastman Family of America Genealogy has been defined as an account or history of the descent of a person or family from an ancestor; the enumeration of ancestors and their children in natural order of succession. But it is sometimes asked, Of what use is it? The question might with almost equal propriety be asked con cerning the kindred sciences of history and biography, for if there is utility in preserving a record of events, or of the life and character of individuals, then science which embraces, as it is now understood and practiced, in a considerable degree both these features, must also be interesting and profitable. Our ancestors, the early founders of New England, were a reverent, conscientious and industrious people, and a consider ation of their lives, their hardships and their achievements, cannot fail of proving salutary. It is both a natural and honorable ambition on the part of any man to have his gene alogy traced, but unfortunately there are some who cannot see the necessity or desirableness of having their pedigrees ascertained, or of preserving any papers or documents bear ing upon them, that they may have their descent defined and arranged in authentic genealogical order. Most people appear content with mere traditionary details of their lineage, without being at the pains to authenticate them by reference to proper records or regular genealogical authorities. And to show the apathy some have, the author will state that he has repeatedly sent self-addressed stamped envelopes for information, and to this day no reply has been received. But he will say in addition, and to their credit, that the Eastmans, as a general thing, have taken a good deal of interest in the work. Book The Women Who Made Early Disneyland

Download or read book The Women Who Made Early Disneyland written by Cindy Mediavilla and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2024-01-04 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although historians have begun to recognize the accomplishments of Disney Studio’s female animators, the women who contributed to the early success of Disneyland remain, for the most part, unacknowledged. Indeed, in celebrating the park’s ten-year anniversary in 1965, Walt Disney thanked “all the boys . . . who’ve been a part of this thing,” even though hundreds of women had also been instrumental in designing, building and operating Disneyland since before its grand opening in July 1955. Seeking to reclaim women’s place in the early history of Disneyland, The Women Who Made Early Disneyland highlights the female Disney employees and contract workers who helped make the park one of the most popular U.S. destinations during its first ten years. Some, like artist Mary Blair, Imagineers Harriet Burns and Alice Davis, “Slue Foot Sue” Betty Taylor, and Disneyland’s first “ambassador,” Julie Reihm, eventually became Disney “legends.” Others remain less well known, including landscape architect Ruth Shellhorn, parade choreographer Miriam Nelson, Aunt Jemima’s Kitchen hostess Alyene Lewis, and Tiny Kline, who at age seventy-one became the first Tinker Bell to fly over Disneyland. This one-of-a-kind book examines the lives and achievements of the women who made early Disneyland.

Book excerpt: As one of the largest cities in one of the nation's most populous counties, Anaheim anchors a host of Orange County attractions, not the least of which are Disneyland, the 2002 World Champion Anaheim Angels, and the Anaheim Convention Center. But Anaheim's early history followed the hardscrabble route, with fitful years of early cityhood steered in part by hardy immigrant German vintners who, with a civic-mindedness, advanced the establishment of the churches, schools, banks, civic services, and a Carnegie Library that made Anaheim thrive. This collection of more than 200 vintage images reveals the foresight of such men as John Frohling, Charles Kohler, George Hansen, John Fischer, August Langenberger, and others who shaped the beginnings of one of California's great cities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Organized baseball in Orange County began in the late 1880s when community teams began forming among oil well workers. Around 1900, a farm boy from Kansas named Walter Johnson arrived with his family. Soon, the flame-throwing future hall-of-fame pitcher would be dominating games throughout the county as a star for Fullerton Union High School. As the popularity of baseball grew, more teams and leagues formed in Santa Ana, Anaheim, Huntington Beach, and other cities. Connie Mack brought the Philadelphia Athletics to spring train in Orange County in the 1940s. Joe DiMaggio played for his Santa Ana Air Base team after joining the Army. Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Jackie Robinson, and many other legends visited Orange County over the years. Dozens of well-known players grew up here, and many are laid to rest here. In 1966, the California Angels played their first game in Orange County, where they remain today as the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. The baseball history in Orange County is rich--and surprising.
