Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lyle Family: The Ancestry and Posterity of Matthew, John, Daniel and Samuel Lyle, Pioneer Settlers in Virginia The aim of this book is to preserve to posterity facts of interest per taining to the Lyle family. That the book has errors is more than probable, since much of the information received in correspondence was variable in dates and in the spelling of proper names. But a few years of delay would have made almost impossible of discovery many of the facts that are presented. In successful effort, in obliging pos. Book Walker s Appeal with a Brief Sketch of His Life And Also Garnet s Address to the Slaves of the United States of America

Download or read book Walker s Appeal with a Brief Sketch of His Life And Also Garnet s Address to the Slaves of the United States of America written by Henry Highland Garnet and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2018-08-09 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This superb book unites the abolitionist famous speeches of David Walker and Henry Highland Garnet - two famous African American campaigners opposing slavery in the 19th century. Filled with vociferous opposition, both campaigners condemn racism and hatred underpinning the perpetuation of slavery. Insight into feelings of the time are dispensed: it was dangerous to be abolitionist as it meant standing against powerful economic interests controlling the Southern states. Retaliation, violent or otherwise, was a constant possibility. Unlike abolitionists more ingratiated with the Establishment of the era, Walker and Garnet did not fear criticizing otherwise lauded figures such as President Thomas Jefferson. As well as owning slaves, Jefferson published his opinion that black people were inherently inferior, and that their place in shackles was justified. That this view be espoused by a recent leader of the United States indicated, for Walker and Garnet, an urgent need for vigorous, sustained opposition.

This book was released on 2018-09-15 with total page 884 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Genealogy of the Descendants of John Walker of Wigton, Scotland, With Records of a Few Allied Families: Also War Records and Some Fragmentary Notes Pertaining to the History of Virginia, 1600-1902 There was a Walker family in Virginia (supposed to have come from England), prior to the coming of our ancestor, of which Dr. Thomas Walker of Castle Hill was probably the best known repre sentative. I am of the Opinion that he and our progenitor, J ohn Walker, were related my Opinion is based chiefly upon the fact of a similarity of Christian names in the two families, and then it will be remembered that soon after coming to America J ohn Walker and several members of his household left Chester County, Pennsylvania, where they had made a temporary home, and went down into Vir ginia and settled not far from the home of this Dr. Walker, Whose presence there was probably known to his kinsmen, if they were re lated, who were seeking homes in a new country.
