Book excerpt: This book considers the differing emotional investments in Israel of, on the one hand, Jews physically domiciled in Israel and, on the other hand, diasporic Jews living outside Israel for whom the country nonetheless forms a central point of affect. The book's purpose is to trace how these two types of investment are represented by francophone Jewish writers. Israel is at once a problematic geopolitical reality in international politics and a salient topos within Jewish cultural imaginaries that transcend national boundaries. However, it has often been claimed that Israel has aspecial relationship with France, which until 1967 was its greatest ally. Israel has a large francophone community (some 800,000), while France has the largest Jewish community in Europe (some 600,000). But Franco-Israeli relations have undergone radical, largely negative transformations under the Fifth Republic (1958- ). The scope of the book is wide, addressing the following questions. How do francophone Jewish writers represent Israel in their literary works? What responses to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict do they express both in these works and in non-literary discourse (interviews and journalistic articles)? What is the role in those responses of emotion, affect, cognition, and ethics? To answer these questions, the book examines 44 different autobiographies, memoirs and novels published between 1965 and 2012 by 27 different authors, both male and female, covering the full cultural spectrum of Jews: Ashkenazic, Sephardic, and Mizrahi. The approach of the book is interdisciplinary, combining literary analysis with insights from the domains of history, journalism, philosophy, politics, psychoanalysis, and sociology.

Systems of family and gender normativity have durably influenced the traditional Jewish universe, but the norms and the institutions that embody them are today shaky. Individualization – the essence of modernity – is at work in the Jewish world, as it is elsewhere, and new identities are emerging and question the transmission of Jewish identities and traditions. The contributions here highlight the contrasting experiences of societies in the Diaspora and in Israeli society – societies that are different, yet sometimes very close because of tensions around religious and identity boundaries. As such, this book revisits the relationship to the “other” and the conditions for an “alliance” among people, a notion dear to Judaism.

Book excerpt: Edmond Fleg and Jewish Minority Culture in Twentieth-Century France, the first critical biography of the leading French writer Edmond Fleg (1874–1963), explores his role in forging a modern French Jewish identity before and after the Second World War. Through his writings – plays, novels, poems, and essays based on Jewish and Christian texts – Fleg fashioned a minority identity within the context of French Third Republic universalism. At the heart of his work we find a radical ecumenism, a rejection of exclusive and homogenous nationalism, and a deep understanding of the necessity of supporting vibrant minority subcultures within the context of a liberal democratic republic. This account is both individual and social, pointing to the ways in which Fleg acted within the possibilities and constraints of his milieu and used his writing to engage with and shape the discursive fabric of twentieth-century French culture. Thomas Nolden uses a wealth of biographical information to expound on his central thesis: the abrupt interruption of transmission of the Jewish heritage by assimilation, migration, and near-extermination required these writers to reinvent themselves, their past, and their memories as Jews. To examine the linguistic traces of this contact we first retrace the background of Jewish immigration to the United States and present a history of Yiddish as a 'contact language'. We then proceed to the diachronic, synchronic and sociolinguistic analysis of Yiddish features in American English as expressed by the New York Ashkenazi Jewish people. Our primary sources are of four different types and cover a time span of sixty years: shops signs, books, articles from The Forward in English; extensive extracts from American Jewish websites and forums. In these sources we examine the lexical, morphological and syntactic features characterizing the presence of Yiddish in American English. When we study the evolution which took place in the last sixty years regarding Yiddish and its presence in American English, our conclusion, when making the link between this data and the sociological determiners involved, is that after a period of assimilation and fading, we witness today the revival of Yiddish words features in American English, especially morphological ones; the ethnic/ religious commitment of a young generation of 'connected' observant Jews brings about a modified American English compared to the previous generation"--back cover.
