Book A Family Saga

Download or read book A Family Saga written by B.B. Ellis and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2013-04-30 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the seven of us have dispersed across the country in our adult lives, we still get together occasionally for family reunions. When we do, the conversation often turns to stories beginning with, Do you remember when. One day we decided that some of these stories should be written down, especially since some of the most cherished stories dealt with our grandparents. We were afraid that these older stories would become lost in the mists of time, and we were aware that our more recent stories would someday be old stories to our children and grandchildren. Thus was born the idea of this book. We have all contributed remembrances to this little volume and we hope that our children will be able to know more about where their parents came from. Compiling this book has been one more enjoyable and unifying activity for a family that continues to cherish each other.

Download or read book Irish Immigrants in Michigan A History in Stories written by Pat Commins & Elizabeth Rice and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2021 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To leave or stay was the question for the Irish in the nineteenth century. In Ireland, people suffered persecution, poverty and famine. America offered freedom and opportunity. For those who left and came to Michigan, the land's abundant natural resources encouraged them to become loggers, miners, fishermen, traders and farmers. Others became rail workers, merchants, lawyers, soldiers, doctors and teachers. Governor Frank Murphy advocated for civil rights. Sister Agnes Gonzaga Ryan administered schools and hospitals. Charlie O'Malley provided generously to suffering Irish people. Lighthouse keeper James Donohue never let physical disability deter him. Prospector Richard Langford discovered iron ore and then left others to mine its wealth. Authors Pat Commins and Elizabeth Rice share one story from each Michigan county about Irish immigrants or their descendants.

Book Warriors in Mr Lincoln S Army

Download or read book Warriors in Mr Lincoln S Army written by Quita V. Shier and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2017-12-11 with total page 1078 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The American Civil War ended 152 years ago. Of the military men who served in this drama of untold suffering, little has been written about the experiences of the American Indian (indigenous) participants. Indigenous soldiers and sailors from various states served bravely for both the Union and the Confederacy. One such unit for the north was Company K of the First Michigan Sharpshooters called the all-Indian Company. Company K was unique because it was the only company in the entire sharpshooter regiment, and in all other military units in Michigan, that had only indigenous enlisted men on its roster. In Warriors in Mr. Lincolns Army, author Quita V. Shier offers a comprehensive profile study of each officer and enlisted American Indian soldier in Company K, First Michigan Sharpshooters, who served in the Civil War from 1863 to 1865. The profiles of this all-Indian Company include information taken from military service records, medical files, biographical and family data extracted from pension files, and personal interviews with some of the soldiers descendants. The profiles feature the infantrymen known as grunts, who bore the burden of fighting, and dying in this conflict, and the officers who led them into battle. Shier shares insight into who these fighting men were, who loved them, and what happened to them.
