La presente investigación documenta la deriva que toma el cambio familiar: hacia qué modelo familiar se tiende; las convergencias y divergencias de España con otros países de la Unión Europea. Se analizan las dimensiones fundamentales del cambio familiar que afectan a su morfología (el concepto de familia) y al ámbito de la convivencia entre sus integrantes. Los datos estadísticos y de encuesta dibujan la progresión hacia modelos más abiertos, plurales, igualitarios y democráticos, reflejo de los valores dominantes en la sociedad actual. De la verticalidad se pasa a la horizontalidad en las relaciones familiares, si bien la progresión es mayor en las actitudes que en los comportamientos "reales". Los análisis multivariables, junto con las estadísticas oficiales, muestran que el ritmo del avance es más pausado cuando afecta al ejercicio del poder y al reparto de las responsabilidades familiares, que a la admisión de las "nuevas" estructuras familiares. Los modelos "ideales" y "reales" de convivencia aún muestran disonancias. Se destaca el papel de la mujer como agente activo de los cambios familiares, junto a la prevalencia de nuevos valores sociales.
