Book Thomas Hobbes and the Political Philosophy of Glory

Download or read book Thomas Hobbes and the Political Philosophy of Glory written by G. Slomp and published by Springer. This book was released on 2000-05-15 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hobbes's philosophical discourse is deconstructed as the interplay of the drama of individual behaviour as perceived by rational agents and the detached analysis of conflict by a political geometer . The author solves some long-standing problems in Hobbesian political philosophy (e.g., the role of glory, Hobbes' pessimism) and shows the consistency of Hobbes' attempt to derive absolutism as the only stable political association. Although based on extensive textual analysis of Hobbes' works and correspondence, the book is an exercise in political philosophy that students will find iconoclastic and experts challenging.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the outset of Napoleon’s career, the charismatic Corsican was compared to mythic heroes of antiquity like Achilles, and even today he remains the apotheosis of French glory, a value deeply embedded in the country’s history. From this angle, the Napoleonic era can be viewed as the final chapter in the battle of the Ancients and Moderns. In this book, Robert Morrissey presents a literary and cultural history of glory and its development in France and explores the “economy of glory” Napoleon sought to implement in an attempt to heal the divide between the Old Regime and the Revolution. Examining how Napoleon saw glory as a means of escaping the impasse of Revolutionary ideas of radical egalitarianism, Morrissey illustrates the challenge the leader faced in reconciling the antagonistic values of virtue and self-interest, heroism and equality. He reveals that the economy of glory was both egalitarian, creating the possibility of an aristocracy based on merit rather than wealth, and traditional, being deeply embedded in the history of aristocratic chivalry and the monarchy—making it the heart of Napoleon’s politics of fusion. Going beyond Napoleon, Morrissey considers how figures of French romanticism such as Chateaubriand, Balzac, and Hugo constantly reevaluated this legacy of glory and its consequences for modernity. Available for the first time in English, The Economy of Glory is a sophisticated and beautifully written addition to French history.

The more we behold the Lord, the more we look like him--and the more we see his glory released into our lives and the lives of those around us. The glory of God is irresistible. Yet seeking to sense his presence or experience his glory for its own sake misses the point. His glory is the natural outpouring of a deep relationship with the Holy Spirit. In these pages, author and speaker Jennifer Eivaz shows how you can enter into more intimate fellowship with the Spirit of God, experience miraculous encounters, and begin to see more miracles, more deliverances, and more lives dramatically changed. Here is the inspiration you need to step into the supernatural and follow God's leading--and carry his glory to the darkest places and see his kingdom come.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this final volume of his great work, von Balthasar reflects on the New Testament vision of God's revelation of his glory in Christ. This divine 'appearing' is grounded in the self-emptying of the eternal logos in the incarnation, cross and descent into hell. Christ is the man who represents God and is also God; he is a symbol of the worls and is also the world. he dies, but in dying rises into the eternal life of God. It is in Christ's incarnatin and resurrection that the Christian vision is truly expressed and the joining of God and the world in the new and eternal convenant is realised.

Book Charged with the Glory of God

Download or read book Charged with the Glory of God written by Caroline Batchelder and published by Lexham Academic. This book was released on 2023-07-26 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Isaiah's servant songs reveal a true and better Adam In Charged with the Glory of God, Caroline Batchelder provides a synchronic, theological, and canonical reading of the four Servant Songs in Isaiah (42:1–9; 49:1–13; 50:3–11; 52:13–53:12), showing how they relate to one another and the message of the prophetic book. Reading Isaiah as a compositional unity in conversation with other texts such as Genesis results in a coherent presentation of the mysterious servant. The polemic against idolatry reveals rebellious Israel to be false imagers of God. In contrast, Isaiah's servant is an ideal embodiment of Yahweh's image and likeness. Thus, the servant is a paradigm for those who wish to recapture and realize God's good creation purposes for all humanity. The servant poems are not only a call to reorient oneself as a servant towards God and his creation, but also a map and means for doing so. In this study, Batchelder offers fresh insights from Isaiah for understanding God's true image and its idolatrous counterfeits.
