Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Edward George Earl Bulwer-Lytton, 1st Baron Lytton (1803-1873) was an English novelist, playwright, and politician. Bulwer-Lytton's literary career began in 1820, with the publication of his first book of poems. He wrote in a variety of genres, including historical fiction, mystery, romance, the occult, and science fiction. In 1828 he attracted general attention with Pelham, a humourous, intimate study of the dandyism of the age which kept gossips busy in identifying characters with public figures of the time. By 1833, he had reached the height of his popularity with Godolphin, followed by The Pilgrims of the Rhine (1834), The Last Days of Pompeii (1834), Rienzi: The Last of the Roman Tribunes (1835), and Harold: The Last of the Saxon Kings (1848).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A detailed history of the brief 1980s conflict between the UK and Argentina, from the author of The First Day on the Somme. With the surprise Argentine invasion of the remote Falkland Islands on April 2, 1982, the United Kingdom found itself at war. Due to the resolve of a determined Prime Minister and the resourcefulness of the Armed Forces, a task force, codenamed Operation Corporate, was quickly dispatched. Remarkably, just over two months later, the islands were liberated, and the invaders defeated. By any standards this was an outstanding feat of arms, cooperation made possible by political resolve, sound planning, strong leadership and the courage and determination of the British forces. Martin Middlebrook, the renowned military historian, has skillfully weaved the many strands of this extraordinary achievement into a fascinating, thorough and highly readable account. Thanks to his meticulous research he covers action at sea, on the land and in the air as well as providing the strategic overview. The author’s use of many first-hand accounts reveals what it was like to be part of this audacious military endeavor. The experiences of the Falkland Islanders during the Argentine occupation are also included. Thirty years on, Middlebrook’s The Falklands War is still an authoritative and thoroughly readable account of this historic enterprise. Originally published as Operation Corporate: The Story of the Falklands War, 1982. Praise for The Falklands War “The author’s descriptions of confrontations in the air, on the sea and on the various battlegrounds are superb, as are his explanations of the use of new weapons, such as the Sea Harrier and the Exocet missile.” —Publishers Weekly

Book Falkland Islanders at War

Download or read book Falkland Islanders at War written by Graham Bound and published by Pen & Sword Books. This book was released on 2006 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "There have been many books on the Falklands war but until now there has never been a comprehensive account of what the invasion, occupation and liberation meant to the Islanders themselves. Graham Bound, the Editor of Port Stanley's newspaper throughout this traumatic period, is ideally qualified to rectify this omission. The result of meticulous research and many interviews with individuals from both sides, Falkland Islanders At War is a sensitive, intimate and accurate record of British people enduring brutal military occupation for the first time in half a century. As well as describing everyday life subject to curfew, arrest and deportation, further disturbing proof is provided that the British government shamefully ignored clear warnings of the Argentines' intentions. Happily there are many positive aspects to this extraordinary story, such as the tiny Royal Marine Naval Party 8901's tenacious defense. The courage and resilience shown by so many Islanders included public disobedience, intelligence-gathering, clandestine radio transmissions and enlisting with and aiding the relieving forces despite the direst consequences. The author is at pains to paint a fair picture and he tells of Argentines who displayed humanity and moral courage and earned the lasting respect of the Islanders. No other book on the dramatic events of 1982 in the South Atlantic has demonstrated so clearly that extreme situations bring out the best and worse [sic] of human characteristics. It will entertain and inspire its readers in equally generous quantities." -- Back of cover.

Book The Battle of the Falkland Islands

Download or read book The Battle of the Falkland Islands written by Henry Edmund Harvey Spencer-Cooper and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Battle of the Falkland Islands: Before and After This plain, unvarnished account, so far as is known, is the first attempt that has been made to link with the description of the Falkland Islands battle, fought on December 8th, 1914, the events leading up to that engagement. In order to preserve accuracy as far as possible, each phase presented has been read and approved by officers who participated. The personal views expressed on debatable subjects, such as strategy, are sure to give rise to criticism, but it must be remembered that at the time of writing the exact positions of the ships engaged in overseas operations were not fully known, even in the Service. The subject falls naturally into three divisions: Part I. deals briefly with the movements of British and German warships, and includes the duel fought by the Carmania, and the action that took place off Coronel. Part II. describes the Falkland Islands battle itself, and the subsequent fate of the German cruiser Dresden. Part III. contains the official dispatches bearing on these exploits.
