It was originally published in 1916, and contains a collection of folk and fairy tales from Belgium, France, England, Japan, Italy, and Serbia. It contains ‘The Buried Moon’ (An English Fairy Tale), ‘The Serpent Prince’ (An Italian Fairy Tale), ‘Ivy and the Chestnut Horse’ (A Russian Fairy Tale), ‘The Hind of the Wood’ (A French Fairy Tale), ‘The Story of the Bird Feng’ (A Chinese Fairy Tale), and more. Dulac was a French-born, British naturalised magazine illustrator, book illustrator and stamp designer, who despite his increasing years, wished to help the war effort in any way he could. The drawings of Fairy Tales of the Allied Nations are delicately drawn, notable for their classic fairy tale charms and Japanese stylistic influence. The skilfully coloured images further refine the enchantingly simple story telling – all presented together in this text. It is a book to be enjoyed by both young and old; a beautiful object, produced at a time of great peril. Pook Press celebrates the great ‘Golden Age of Illustration‘ in children’s literature – a period of unparalleled excellence in book illustration from the 1880s to the 1930s. Our collection showcases classic fairy tales, children’s stories, and the work of some of the most celebrated artists, illustrators and authors.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A RUSSIAN FAIRY TALEThe old wife sang merrily as she sat in the inglenook stirring the soup, for she had never felt so sad. Many, many years had come and gone, leaving the weight of their winters on her shoulders and the touch of snow on her hair without ever bringing her a little child. This made her and her dear old husband very sad, for there were many children outside, playing in the snow. It seemed hard that not even one among them was their very own. But alas! there was no hope for such a blessing now. Never would they see a little fur cap hanging on the corner of the mantelpiece, nor two little shoes drying by the fire. The old husband brought in a bundle of wood and set it down. Then, as he heard the children laughing and clapping their hands outside, he looked out at the window. There they were, dancing with glee round a snow man they had made. He smiled as he saw that it was evidently meant to look like the Mayor of the village, it was so fat and pompous.'Look, Marusha!' he cried to the old wife. 'Come and see the snow man they've made.'As they stood together at the window, they laughed to see what fun the children got out of it. Suddenly the old man turned to her with a bright idea.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Edmund Dulac's Fairy-Book: Fairy Tales of the Allied Nations by Edmund Dulac. Once upon a time there lived a King and a Queen whose marriage was as happy as happy could be; they loved each other tenderly, and, in turn, their subjects loved them; but one thing clouded their life: and that was that they had no children, no heir. The Queen thought that the King would love her much more if she had a child. So she made up her mind to drink of the water of a certain spring. People came there in thousands from afar to drink of this special kind of water; and one saw so many that it looked as though all the world and his wife were there. Now there were many, many lovely fountains in the wood where the Queen and other people went to drink at the spring; so the Queen asked her ladies to lead the others away to these fountains to amuse themselves, and leave her alone. Then, when they had all withdrawn, she bewailed in a plaintive voice.

Download or read book The Dreamer of Dreams Illustrated by Edmund Dulac written by Anon. and published by Read Books Ltd. This book was released on 2013-04-16 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘The Dreamer of Dreams’ was originally penned by ‘Marie, The Queen of Roumania’, and is presented here, alongside the splendid illustrations of Edmund Dulac. The book starts with the enigmatic phrase, ‘And I dream in my waking dreams, and deep in the dreams of sleep’ – and continues in this fantastical vein. The story tells of a beautiful young artist who dreams a pair of enchanting eyes – and gives up all his work in order to find them. The pervading pathos and melancholy of the story ensures its appeal for both adults and children, with a gentle beauty captured by Dulac’s images. This edition of ‘The Dreamer of Dreams’ contains a set of dazzling illustrations by a true master of the ‘Golden Age’; Edmund Dulac (1882 – 1953). A French artist himself, Dulac had a particular affinity with these old European tales, as well as possessing a rigorously painterly background. This combination ensured the book’s artistic success. Appearing alongside the text, his illustrations further enhance and elucidate the enchanting narrative. Pook Press celebrates the great ‘Golden Age of Illustration‘ in children’s literature – a period of unparalleled excellence in book illustration. We publish rare and vintage Golden Age illustrated books, in high-quality colour editions, so that the masterful artwork and story-telling can continue to delight both young and old.
