Book Brazil and the United States during World War II and Its Aftermath

Download or read book Brazil and the United States during World War II and Its Aftermath written by Frank D. McCann and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-08-24 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The military alliance between the United States and Brazil played a critical role in the outcome of World War II, and yet it is largely overlooked in historiography of the war. In this definitive account, Frank McCann investigates Brazilian-American military relations from the 1930s through the years after the alliance ended in 1977. The two countries emerge as imbalanced giants with often divergent objectives and expectations. They nevertheless managed to form the Brazilian Expeditionary Force and a fighter squadron that fought in Italy under American command, making Brazil the only Latin American country to commit troops to the war. With the establishment of the US Air Force base in Natal, Northeast Brazil become a vital staging area for air traffic supplying Allied forces in the Middle East and Asian theaters. McCann deftly analyzes newly opened Brazilian archives and declassified American intelligence files to offer a more nuanced account of how this alliance changed the course of World War II, and how the relationship deteriorated in the aftermath of the war.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Brazilian Northeast has long been a marginalized region with a complex relationship to national identity. It is often portrayed as impoverished, backward, and rebellious, yet traditional and culturally authentic. Brazil is known for its strong national identity, but national identities do not preclude strong regional identities. In Region Out of Place, Courtney J. Campbell examines how groups within the region have asserted their identity, relevance, and uniqueness through interactions that transcend national borders. From migration to labor mobilization, from wartime dating to beauty pageants, from literacy movements to representations of banditry in film, Campbell explores how the development of regional cultural identity is a modern, internationally embedded conversation that circulated among Brazilians of every social class. Part of a region-based nationalism that reflects the anxiety that conflicting desires for modernity, progress, and cultural authenticity provoked in the twentieth century, this identity was forged by residents who continually stepped out of their expected roles, taking their region’s concerns to an international stage.

Book Modeling and Measurement Methods for Acoustic Waves and for Acoustic Microdevices

Download or read book Modeling and Measurement Methods for Acoustic Waves and for Acoustic Microdevices written by Marco G. Beghi and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2013-08-28 with total page 616 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Acoustics is a mature field which enjoys a never ending youth. New developments are induced by either the search for a better understanding, or by technological innovations. Micro-fabrication techniques introduced a whole new class of microdevices, which exploit acoustic waves for various tasks, and in particular for information processing and for sensing purposes. Performance improvements are achievable by better modelling tools, able to deal with more complex configurations, and by more refined techniques of fabrication and of integration in technological systems, like wireless communications. Several chapters of this book deal with modelling and fabrication techniques for microdevices, including unconventional phenomena and configurations. But this is far from exhausting the research lines in acoustics. Theoretical analyses and modelling techniques are presented, for phenomena ranging from the detection of cracks to the acoustics of the oceans. Measurement methods are also discussed, which probe by acoustic waves the properties of widely different systems.

Book Copersucar Fittipaldi The full story of Brazilian Formula 1

Download or read book Copersucar Fittipaldi The full story of Brazilian Formula 1 written by Ricardo Sterchele and published by Frôntis Editorial. This book was released on 2020-01-10 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It documents the events that took place inside and outside the backstage of each Grand Prix from 1975 to 1980 that affected the team's performance on the tracks. It brings a summary of the best articles, articles, interviews, statements and photos presented in journalistic reports published at the time, showing the reader all the effort and overcoming the setbacks that these fearless brothers went through. This is what made them victorious, whose attitudes we must all aim for. They are winners because they managed to let go of financial interests and easy successes to invest all their energies in the realization of a great dream, an ideal. This is the greatest and best example that they set for all our young people today and tomorrow. The purpose of the sponsorship was to show the world that Brazil was not commanded by chiefs or that the Japanese descended from their liners in rowboats to exchange native products for baffles. That in Brazil there was an industrial park and high-tech development centers, in addition to a brave and fearless people, who are not afraid of adversity. The Fittipaldi brothers showed the world that we, despite the Tupiniquins, can match any enterprise with the same quality and competence as the most developed countries. What we lack is to support our initiatives with respect and patriotism. Demanding victories in such a technologically sophisticated and complex enterprise in the early years, shows that in the field of wisdom and humility we are still underdeveloped.

Book Creative Transformations

Download or read book Creative Transformations written by Krista Brune and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2020-11-01 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Creative Transformations, Krista Brune brings together Brazilian fiction, film, journalism, essays, and correspondence from the late nineteenth to the early twenty-first centuries. Drawing attention to the travels of Brazilian artists and intellectuals to the United States and other parts of the Americas, Brune argues that experiences of displacement have had a significant influence on their work. Across Brazilian literary and cultural history, translation becomes a way of navigating and representing the resulting encounters between languages, interactions with Spanish Americans, and negotiations of complex identities. While Creative Transformations engages extensively with theories of translation from different national and disciplinary contexts, it also constructs a vision of translation uniquely attuned to the place of Brazil in the Americas. Brune reveals the hemispheric underpinnings of works by renowned Brazilian writers such as Machado de Assis, Sousândrade, Mário de Andrade, Silviano Santiago, and Adriana Lisboa. In the process, she rethinks the dynamics between cosmopolitan and national desires and between center and periphery in global literary markets.

Download or read book Voices of the Magi written by Suzel Reily and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2002-05 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Voices of the Magi explores the popular Catholic musical ensembles of southeastern Brazil known as folias de reis (companies of kings). Composed predominantly of low-income workers, the folias reenact the journey of the Wise Men to Bethlehem and back to the Orient, as they roam from house to house, singing to bless the families they visit in exchange for food and money. These gifts, in turn, are used to prepare a festival on Kings' Day, January 6, to which all who contributed are invited. Focusing on urban folias, Suzel Ana Reily shows how participants use the ritual journeys and musical performances of the folias to create sacred spheres distinct from, yet intimately related to, their everyday world. Reily calls this practice "enchantment" and argues that it allows the folia communities to temporarily make the social ideals of mutual reciprocity and equality embodied in their religious beliefs a reality. The contrast between their ritual experiences and the daily lives of these impoverished workers, in turn, reinforces the religious convictions of these devotees of the music of the Magi.

Book China in Space

Download or read book China in Space written by Brian Harvey and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-27 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rockets were invented in China, the home of many modern inventions, including ancient astronomy, and were used originally for military purposes in the 13th century. The Chinese space program was founded in October 1956 by the father of Chinese rocketry, Tsien Hsue Shen, who lived in California in the 1930s until his expulsion as a Chinese spy. In recent times there have been three manned spaceflights, highlighting China’s ambitious space program and generating worldwide interest. Future missions are planned, including a mission to go to Mars. The explosive growth of China’s innovative and rapidly developing space program in recent years has made it a "hot" topic in international space policy. This follow up to Harvey's earlier book, China's Space Program - From Conception To Manned Spaceflight (2004) bring us up to date with everything that is happening in the Chinese space program today and looks at its ambitious future. The author briefly summarizes how this program evolved from medieval times, and uncovers the truth behind the bland, unreliable, and generally uninformative news releases issued around each space mission. It also examines the key features of the program, previously unknown to the outside world.
